The seasonal and interannual variation in the species composition and abundance of the fish assemblage were studied. Fish samples were collected seasonally over 4 year (2005 to 2008) using pots in the southern coast of East Sea. During the study period, a total of 32 fish species belonging to 24 families were collected. The dominant species were Conger myriaster, Paracentropogon rubripinnis, Liparis tanakae, Parapercis sexfasciata, Eptatretus burgeri and Clupea pallasii pallasii, which accounted for 91.9% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, biomass, and diversity fluctuated with season. The peak number of species and number of individuals occurred were in August 2008, whereas the biomass was the highest in August 2005 and diversity was in May 2008. The abundance of dominant species also showed some seasonal and interannual changes. A one-way analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) showed that the fish assemblage in 2008 was significantly different from those of 2005, 2006 and 2007, whereas there was no significant difference among seasons over 4 years.
The infection status of zoonotic trematode metacercariae was investigated in a total of 2,293 freshwater fish collected from 11 rivers or streams in 9 administrative regions of Gangwon-do, Korea for 5 years (2009-2013). All fish were collected by netting methods and examined using the artificial digestion methods. Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae were detected in 4 fish species, i.e., Pungtungia herzi, Squalidus japonicus coreanus, Acheilognathus rhombeus, and Ladislabia taczanowskii, from only Hantangang in Cheorwon-gun. Metagonimus spp. metacercariae were found in 1,154 (50.3%) fish and their average number per infected fish was 55.8. Among the positive fish species, especially Tribolodon hakonensis from Namdaecheon in Yangyang-gun and Plecoglossus altivelis from Osipcheon in Samcheok-si were most heavily infected. Centrocestus armatus metacercariae were detected in 611 (26.7%) fish and the average metacercarial burden per infected fish was 1,032. Two chub species, Zacco platypus and Zacco temminckii were highly and heavily infected with C. armatus metacercariae in almost all regions surveyed. Echinostoma spp. metacercariae were also found in 24 fish from a few localities, but their numbers per fish infected were very low. From the above results, it is confirmed that the metacercariae of intestinal flukes, especially Metagonimus spp. and C. armatus, were heavily infected, while C. sinensis metacercariae were rarely found in fish from Gangwon-do, Korea.
Droughts can alter the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, including fish communities. This study compared the variations in fish communities in Juam reservoir before and after drought events. Fish sampling was conducted five times from April 2021 to April 2023 using three different sampling methods (kick net, cast net, and gill net). The water level in the reservoir reached its peak (103.73 EL.m, 62.2% capacity) in September 2021, before the drought, and dropped to its lowest point (88.84 EL.m, 17.6% capacity) in April 2023. The dissolved oxygen content in the reservoir decreased from 27 to 6.3 mg/L between the period with the lowest water level (April 2023) and the period with the highest water level (September 2021). In September 2021, 466 fish were collected, but after one year of drought, the number of individuals decreased to 105. Further, the number of fish collected and water levels were positively correlated. Dominant species exhibited a population decline of over 60% with decreasing water levels. These findings highlight the importance of fishery resource management during drought periods.

Monthly variation in species composition of upstream-migrating fish in the Cheonjeyeon Estuary was determined by analyzing fish data collected January~September 2004 and January~August 2007. Fish migrating from the sea to freshwater through the channels were collected by a rectangular net with a mesh size of 2 mm during the day and at night in the new moon. Of 14 species collected, ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) and mullet (Mugil cephalus) predominated in abundance. Glass eels (Anguilla japonica) occurred mainly during the night from February to May. Other fishes collected included brackish-water gobiids (Gymnogobius urotaenia, Rhinogobius giurinus, Tridentiger obscurus, and Sicyopterus japonicus), freshwater fishes (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Rhynchocypris oxycephalus), and coastal marine fishes (Engraulis japonicus, Pempheris japonica, Plotosus lineatus, Takifugu niphobles, and Terapon jarbua). Ayu occurred during almost all sampling periods. They ranged principally from 55 to 100 mm total length (TL), with some fish larger than 100 mm TL collected after April. Mullet also occurred during almost all sampling periods. They ranged principally 25~58 mm TL, with some larger fish of 103~240 mm TL collected in February and April. That only a few freshwater and brackish-water fishes occurred in the study area is probably related to the freshwater systems having long been isolated from the continental systems and to the poorly developed estuaries in Jeju Island reflecting limited river discharge.
Abundances of small fishes that utilized eelgrass meadows of Hansilpo, Chungmu, were analyzed to determine fish species composition and monthly changes of this temperate seagrass fish community during 1983-1986. A total of 4,646 fishes that comprised 35 species in 19 families was collected during the period of investigation. Pholis taczanowskii, Pseudoblennius cottoides, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, and Sryngnathus schlegeli predominated in ichthyofauna that occupied the eelgrass meadows most of the year. These four most abundant fish species accounted for approximately $64\%$ of the number of fish collected. Juveniles of economically valuable fish species such as Sebastes inermis, Platycephalus indicus and Limanda yokohamae were also collected in the study area. Seasonal changes in both species composition and abundances of fish populations were major characteristics in these eelgrass meadows. A peak abundance of total fishes occurred during spring, with a secondary peak during fall. The lowest abundance of total fishes occurred in winter. Each abundant fish species showed its own seasonal abundance pattern, and a peak abundance 1-3 months separated from other species with some overlap of the increased larval recruitment.
Wild and cultured fish including olive flounder, sea bass, rock bream, yellowtail, gray mullet, gizzard shad, black rockfish, red seabream and squid were collected from a fish market located on the coast of Korea, and the antibiotic content of their muscle was investigated. Tetracycline group antibiotics were not detected in the 108 individuals of 9 species of wild fish. However, oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline(TC) were detected in some samples of the 111 individuals in 7 cultured live fish species. The detected ranges of OTC and TC were ND~ 0.06 and ND~ 0.03, respectively. Five different fluoroquinolone antibiotics were also tested for, but were not detected in the wild fish species. Only small amount of criprofloxacin(ND~0.029 mg/kg) were detected in a few cultured fish samples. Oxolinic acid was not detected in either wild and cultured fish samples. Results showed that even very low levels of antibiotics could be detected by the testing methods used. Antibiotics were identified in a few fish samples but levels were far below the maximum allowable limits of the Korean Food Code, and the safety of fish being sold in markets, with regard to antibiotic levels, was confirmed.
This study was conducted to evaluate fish fauna, species composition, and various guilds against stream orders along with analysis of fish community structure and diversity in Geum River watershed from 2005 to 2007. The total number of fish collected was 4,216 representing 12 families with 56 species. Zacco platypus was the most abundant fish species with 26% in relative abundance (RA). Korean endemic species were 24 species including Zacco koreanus, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Gobiobotia nakdongensis, and Iksookimia koreensis, etc. We also collected endangered fish species such as G. nakdongensis, Liobagrus obesus, and Pseudopungtungia nigra, etc., and their new distribution sites were found in the survey, providing some sites of the fish conservation and protection. Fish tolerance and trophic guilds analysis showed that the proportion of sensitive species, intermediate species, and tolerant species were 33.4%, 29.3%, and 37.3%, respectively and omnivores and insectivores were 48.1 % and 38.4%, respectively. Analysis of site-base study indicated that tolerant species and omnivore species were high in some polluted tributary streams (i.e., Gap and Miho stream) and sensitive and insectivore species were low. In the functional relations, expressed as simple linear regression equations, of stream order on fish metric attributes, showed that the number of species and the number of individuals increased as the stream order increases. This phenomenon was explained by greater availability of stable water volume, rich food, and higher physical habitat capacity. Such guild compositions and stream order characteristics of the river influenced the community structures, based on species diversity, dominance and evenness index in the study. This study may be used as important data in the future for comparisons of fish fauna and compositions before and after two weir (dam) constructions in the middle of Geum River by the government.

Change in fish species composition after the Hebei Spirit oil spill in December 2007 off Taean were determined by analysis of samples collected in Mailpo beach, 10 km south from the oil spill site and polluted by the crude oil. Fish samples were collected by a beach seine in the shallow water at Malipo beach during the low tide of the new moon from February 2008 to December 2009. Five seine hauls were made during the day and the night in each sampling time. Monthly day and night samples did not show the significant differences in species composition. A total of 21 species, 1,032 individuals and 6,544 g of fish were collected in 2008, and 31 species, 4,206 individuals and 35,659 g of fish in 2009. The species collected were composed of the small-sized fish or juveniles. Abundant fishes were the resident species in coastal water, and the migrants were low in abundance. Among the fish occurred, Chelon haematochelius, Sebastes schlegelii, Takifugu niphobles and Pleuronectes yokohamae were predominated in abundance of both years. Monthly fish abundance and species diversity in 2008 were significantly lower than those in 2009. A few number of resident fish were collected from February to June 2008 showing the lowest in May 2008, and fish abundance increased from July 2008. The number of species and abundance of fish in 2009 were increased in spring as the temperature raised, showed a peak in summer and decreased in autumn. This monthly variation in fish species composition and abundance was similar to those in the non-polluted water in other temperate waters. Low fish abundance during several months after oil spill was considered to be related to the residual oil in the water and habitat disturbance due to oil cleaning activity in the beach. Monthly fish species compositions after September 2008 were similar to those of 2009 suggested that the impact on the shallow water fish by the oil residuals was not too significant at least to the fish species composition after September 2008.

Monthly variation in species composition of shallow water fish in Cheonsu Bay were determined using samples collected by a beach seine in the shallow water at Namdang beach from April 2010 to March 2011. The species composition were compared to the data obtained in 1885~86 and in 1993, and factors affecting the long-term change in species composition were analyzed. Fish collected during the study were 25 species, 2,194 individuals and 16,762 g. Chelon haematocheilus were predominated in abundance, accounting 68.5% in the number of individuals. A few number of fish were collected during the cold months from November to April. Abundance was high from July to September by a large catch of juveniles of pelagic fish. Species composition in 1993 did not differ significantly from that in 1985~86 although Fabonigobius gymnauchen living in the fine sediments were increased in abundance. Abundance increase of this gobiid fish was considered to be related to the sedimentation of fine particles due to weakened water circulation after dike construction. The number of species and catch amount in 2010~11 were significantly decreased comparing to those of the former periods; especially in pelagic fish and benthic fish, but C. haematocheilus were greatly increased in abundance. C. haematocheilus is an estuarine fish being able to survive in relatively poor quality of water. This increase seems to be related to fish larvae from the culture net cages recently installed in the inner bay. Recent decrease in abundance of shallow water fish suggested that water quality has been gradually getting poor and recently attained over a critical level for the nursery function of fish.
Two parasitic copepods, poecilostomatoid Colobomatus mylionus Fukui, 1965 and siphonostomatoid Clavellisa chinensis ($Y{\ddot{u}}$, 1933), were reported for the first time from Korea and redescribed based on the females collected from the marine fish of Korean waters. The C. mylionus was collected from the blackhead seabream, Acanthopagrus schelegelii(Bleeker). Colobomatus mylionus had been frequently reorded from marine teleost fishes from of Eden, Newcastle, Brisbane, Yelloon, and Point Sampson. The second record was C. chinensis redescribed based on the speciemens collected from the gills of a Japanese grenadier anchovy, Coilia nasus Temminck and Schlegel. Some differences were observed between the orginal description of known specimens examined in this study, these differences do not warrant a change in the taxonomic staus of the two species. The attachment site of all two copepods reported from Korea were the cephalic sensory canals and gills.
