  • A composite piston with a crown made of steel and a skirt made of NCI is used in a marine diesel engine, which has a maximum firing pressure of over 180 bar and a high thermal load. In the fatigue design of the composite piston, the fatigue is influenced by factors such as the load type, surface roughness, and temperature; further, the distribution ratio of the firing force from the crown to the skirt is important for optimizing the design of the crown and skirt. In this study, the stress gradient method was used to consider the effect of the load type. The temperature field on the piston was predicted by cocktail-shaking cooling analysis, and influence of high temperature on fatigue strength was investigated. The load transfer ratio and contact pressure were optimized by design of the surface shape and accurate tolerance analysis. Finally, the cooling performance and durability design of the composite piston were verified by performing a long-term prototype test.

  • This study has examined closely on the various foundamental conditions for the fitting in steatite porcelain as a industrial porcelain of superior quality, and as a decorated porcelain. The materials consisting of the Kyul Sung talc, and the sea water magnesia clinker power which was produced from Sam Hwa-Hwa Sung, as major constituents have been used, and also used Hyup Jin kaolin as clay minerals to give them plasticity. First, the mixture was made of corresponding in the theoretical composition of enstatite with Kyul sung talc and sea water magnesia clinker, and kaolin was added in various kinds of 1%, 2.5% 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight of the mixture. Next, the mixture was fired at the various temperatures from 1330 to 145$0^{\circ}C$. After we examined closely the physical properties and microstructures, we achieved the results that noted from this study were listed below. 1. The addition amount of kaolin should generally be from 5% to 10% by weight of the mixture to give mixture plasticity in steatite porcelain, but preferably about 20% to consider the firing temperature. 2. The temperature of the optimum firing range is from 1390 C to 142$0^{\circ}C$. 3. A case, which the $A_2$ composition had been fired at 142$0^{\circ}C$, showed a good effect in the strength, but showed a bad result in the absorption. Therefore, the specimens of $A_4$ the composition has excellent in properties of matters when the composition is fired at 142$0^{\circ}C$. Also, we consider that the specimens of the $A_5$ composition, which is fired at 139$0^{\circ}C$, is suitable for the $MgO-SiO_2$ porcelain bodies with respect to the various properties.

  • Effect of pH variation in starting solution for the making of hydroxyapatite powder was studied in relation to the sinterability of the powder and their mechanical properties of the sintered hydroxyapatite ceramics. The sinterability of hydroxyapatite powder prepared at different pH was found to be improved with increase in pH value of the starting solutions. Thus the powders prepared from the higher pH solutions including 10.5, 11.0 and 11.5 could be well densified almost upto theoretical density by firing for 1 hr at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$. But the powder based on pH 10 exhibited less sinterability even being fired at much higher temperature of 1,10$0^{\circ}C$, it gave only 90-95% of theoretical density. On the other hand the powder prepared on the lowest pH value 9.5 could not be well densified and it could obtain only 78% of theoretical density even by firing at 1,30$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. It was found that prismatic crystals of whitlockite were always included in the sintered bodies based on the lower pH values as a minority crystalline phase together with the major crystalline phase of hydroxyapatite and its inclusion might impair the sinterability of powder. However in the case of the higher pH, the powder contained only hydroxyapatite as a crystalline phase on sintering without any minorities. The sphere shape of crystals might help effectively the densification of the bodies. The best mechanical properties could be obtained from the body of pH 11 sintered at 1,10$0^{\circ}C$, which gave 99.5% of theoretical density, 662Kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ of vickers hardness and 1,352Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of diameteral compression strength.

  • The silencer for the medium caliber gun was studied to reduce the propagation of gun-generated noise from the firing test range to the community. Three types of silencer were made to compare the reduction of sound pressure level and the effect of chamber volume and the exit angle to the reduction of sound pressure was considered. The structural analysis and measurement of pressure in the silencer showed that the structure is safe in terms of strength. The increase of recoil force to buffer must be considered in the development of silencer. The hypothesis test on the muzzle velocity for the existence of silencer showed that there are no difference at the significance level of 0.05.

  • Statement of the problem. Recently an innovative method of fabricating indirect restorations by gold electroforming has been developed. But the bond quality and strength of the gold coping to the porcelain is uncertain. Purpose of study. The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the electroformed gold surface for mechanical bonding between the gold and the ceramic veneering. Methods/material. Electroformed disks were made using electroforming technique. And the surface of the electroformed coping was analyzed after sandblasting, heat-treatment, bonding agent application, opaque porcelain firing with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. Results. In the analysis with SEM, Sandblasting made the sharp edges and undercuts on the electroformed surface, and after bonding agent application, net-like structure were created on the electroformed surface. In the energy dispersive x-ray analysis it is confirmed that electroformed surface contains some impurities. Conclusion. With the use of sandblasting and bonding agent, electroformed surface seems to be enough to bond with veneering porcelain.

  • Engine Noise is composed of the mechanical and combustion noise. The contribution of combustion noise is generally bigger than the contribution of the mechanical noise at idle condition in DI diesel engine. That noise usually makes a roughness problem at the fundamental engine order. It is difficult to remove the modulation frequency so we have to directly reduce the combustion noise. The key effect of combustion noise reducing solution is the modification of the combustion pressure profile. It is accomplished by the multiple injection method and we solved the 400Hz combustion noise and improved the sound quality at idle condition in DI diesel engine.

  • Presuming that firing neurons have motions inside the MRI magnet due to the interaction between the neuronal magnetic field and the main magnetic field, we applied motion encoding gradients to dissected snail ganglia to observe faster responding MRI signal than the BOLD signal. To activate the snail ganglia in synchronization with the MRI pulse sequence, we used electrical stimulation with the frequency of 30 Hz and the pulse width of 2s. To observe the fast responding signal, we used the volume selected MRI sequence. The magnetic resonance signal intensity, measured with 8 ms long motion encoding gradient with a 20mT/m gradient strength, decreased about $3.46{\pm}1.48%$ when the ganglia were activated by the electrical stimulation.

  • Recently, it is possible for small sized and high speed diesel engines by development of commonrail system. And in order to increase the engine performance, the cylinder firing pressure is a tendency which increases. On the other side, the weight of engine becomes lightly in spit of high performance diesel engine. Therefore, the weight optimization for engine components is very important point on the design process. Also, the weight optimization must necessarily be considered the robust design against a fatigue failure. This paper focuses on the weight optimization of crankshaft according to web shape at the light duty diesel engine, and torsion characteristics of crankshaft is considered with 1D and 3D analysis tools.

  • To improve resistance in thermal shock of zirconia setter which is frequently and repeatedly exposed to high temperature, high degree of porosity and control of thermal expansion are needed for which the fused CSZ (CaO stabilized zirconia) is used to produce the zirconia setter. In the present study, the effects of sintering temperature, cool down condition, addition of CaO stabilizer, and addition of other additives on phase transition and thermal expansion behavior of the fabrication process of zirconia setter, were examined. The zirconia setter, fabricated with fused CSZ at 1550℃, exhibited 20.4 MPa of flexural strength, 6.8% of absorbance, and 27.9% of apparent porosity. The rapid change in thermal expansion of zirconia setter is observed at temperature around 800℃, and it was reduced by low firing temperature, slowed cooled down, and addition of CaO.
