  • As a college dormitory has the features of high dwelling density and a floating population that becomes crowded during particular times, when a disaster such as a fire occurs, it has the risk of causing much loss of life. In this study, the fire simulation program Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), is used to predict the risk when a fire occurs, to analyze the problem, and to suggest an improvement plan for a new cadet dormitory at an university in Korea. The research results are as follows. When a fire occurred in the ironing room inside the cadet dormitory, a smoke detector operated after 65 seconds. Thirteen seconds later, a sprinkler started to operate. The temperature and carbon monoxide density reached the limit value at 241 and 248 seconds, respectively. Because the limit visibility value was reached within 66 seconds after the occurrence of a fire, it is predicted that preparation must be finished and evacuation should begin within 1 minute after the fire occurs, in order to have no casualties. Synthesizing this dormitory fire risk prediction result, the visibility value is considered to be the most dangerous factor for personal safety. Because of this, installing a smoke extraction system is suggested to secure visibility. After the installation of a smoke extraction system, the problem of smoke diffusion in the corridors improved.

  • The autoignition temperature (AIT) of a material is the lowest temperature at which the material will spontaneously ignite. The AIT is important index for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. This study measured the AITs of n-decane+ethylbenzene system by using ASTM E659 apparatus. The AITs of n-decane and ethylbenzene which constituted binary system were $210^{\circ}C$ and $430^{\circ}C$, respectively. The experimental AITs of n-decane+ethylbenzene mixture were a good agreement with the calculated AITs by the proposed equations with about $11^{\circ}C$ A.A.D.(average absolute deviation).

  • Induction heating is widely used in today's industry, in operations such as metal hardening, pre-heating for forging operations, melting or cooking. In this paper, the magneto-thermal analysis of an induction heating jar(IH-JAR) was presented as an efficient design. The magnetic field intensity inside the axisymmetric shaped cooker was analyzed using three-dimensional axisymmetric finite element method(FLUX2D) and the effectual heat source was obtained by ohmic losses from eddy currents induced in the jar. The heat was calculated using the heat source and heating equation. Also, it was presented the temperature characteristics of the IH-JAR according to time and relative permeability in stainless parts and in aluminum parts.

  • Due to the environmental factors of the sea, ship accidents always contain an inclination angle. The change in the ship affects not only the evacuation speed of passengers but also the fire growth in the ship. For this reason, when analyzing the fire, it is necessary to analyze the risks by considering conditions of inclination. In this study, the temperature that affects the fire was calculated by alteration of ship's heel and trim angle and analyzed using FLUENT. Based on fire occurrence position, evacuation should be done within 37 seconds under the condition of $-10^{\circ}$ heeling angle and 36 seconds under the condition of $-10^{\circ}$ trim angle. However, it was predicted that the evacuation will not be affected under the conditions of $+10^{\circ}$ heel angle and $+10^{\circ}$ trim angle. For these reasons, it is confirmed that when the ship is on fire, evacuation measures should be considered based on the heel and trim conditions as per the location of the fire.

  • In order to evaluate the fire and explosion involved and to ensure the safe and optimized operation of chemical processes, it is necessary to know combustion characteristics. The explosion limit, the heat of combustion, flame temperature and temperature dependence of the lower explosive limit are the major combustion characteristics used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. The aim of this study is to investigate interrelationship of explosion characteristics and the temperature dependence of the lower explosion limit at elevated temperature for akylketones. By using the reference data, the empirical equations which describe the interrelationships of explosion properties of akylketones have been derived. Also, the new equations using the mathematical and statistical methods for predicting the temperature dependence of lower explosion limits of akylketones on the basis of the literature data are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations agreed with literature data within a few percent. From the given results, using the proposed methodology, it is possible to predict the explosion limits of the other flammable substances.

  • Numerical simulations were performed for the prediction of the flame structure of a hydrocarbon flame interacting with a hydrogen flame. Methane was used as a hydrocarbon fuel in this study. The interaction of two 1D premixed flames established in counterflow geometry was investigated. The temperature of the flame interacting with each other was much higher and the flame thickness was wider at a global strain of $1000\;s^{-1}$ than normal methane flame.

  • This paper concerns smoke propagation in tunnel fires with various size of fire source. Experiments carried out in model tunnel and those results were compared with numerical results. The Froude scaling law was used to scale model tests for comparison with larger scale tests. In order to validate for numerical analysis, temperature distribution of predicted data was compared with measured data. Examining the temperature distribution, we found that smoke layer does not come down under 50% of tunnel heights for a short tunnel heights for a short tunnel firs without ventilation. Front velocity of smoke layer is proportional to the cube root of heat release rate. And it is in good agreement with existing empirical expression and numerical prediction. In a short tunnel fire, horizontal propagation of smoke layer is more important than vertical smoke movement for evacuation plan.

  • This paper describes the smoke filling process of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) codo to the simulation of fire induced flows in the atrium space (SIVANS atrium at Japan) containing smoke radiation effect. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the discrete ordinates method. The result of the calculated smoke temperature containing radiation effect has shown a better prediction than the result calculated by only convection effect in comparison with the experimental data. This seems to come from the radiation effect of $H_2$O and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Thus, the consideration of the radiation effect under smoke in fire should be necessary in order to get more realistic result. Also the numerical results indicated that the smoke layer is developing at a rate of about 0.1 m/s. It would take about 450 seconds after starting the ultra fast fire of 560 kW that the smoke layer move down to 1.5m above the escape level.

  • The usage of the correct combustion properties of the treated substance for the safety of the process is critical. For the safe handling of n-nonane being used in various ways in the chemical industry, the flash point and the autoignition temperature(AIT) of n-nonane was experimented. And, the explosion limit of n-nonane was calculated by using the flash point obtained in the experiment. The flash points of n-nonane by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $31^{\circ}C$ and $34^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of n-nonane by using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $37^{\circ}C$ and $42^{\circ}C$. The AIT of n-nonane by ASTM 659E tester was measured as $210^{\circ}C$. The lower explosion limit by the measured flash point $31^{\circ}C$ was calculated as 0.87 vol%. And the upper explosion limit by the measured upper flash point $53^{\circ}C$ was calculated as 2.78 vol%. It was possible to predict lower explosion limit by using the experimental flash point or flash point in the literature.
