Traditionally, the thickness of fire protection materials of structural elements such as beam and column have been decided by fire test using the predominant steel section of $H-300{\times}300{\times}10{\times}15$ for column and $H-400{\times}200{\times}8{\times}13$ for beam in Korea. But this way of determination of fire protection thickness yields very unduly results. Because the temperature-increment rate of structural steel elements depends mainly on magnitude of their cross-areas. In general, the thicker size of cross-areas for structural elements, the lower temperature shows up. It had already proved that the fire protection thickness only depends on the size of cross-areas and the fire protection method for three-fide or four-side exposed conditions in European countries, the United State of America and so on. To demonstrate there would be differences among various cross-areas for structural elements, we conducted several fire tests with full-scale specimens of beams and columns. For the determination of critical temperature for steel section when the fire resistant performance is needed to be decided, we conducted with a loaded fire test for beam and column, respectively. The small column in 1.0 meter length and beam in 1.5 meter length were used in order to deprive the rational fire protection thickness of structural elements such as beam and column, respectively. After test, we could obtain there were significant temperature lass between higher cross-areas and lower cross-areas. The critical temperature of steel as a criterion is used 538$^{\circ}C$ for column and 593$^{\circ}C$ for beam which is from ASTM E 119 because we don't make provisions as critical temperature by elements. We could consider that the best way of determination of fire protection thickness is using the following multi-regression equation which was deprived from several fire tests using the concept of section factor, FR(column) = 0.17 +5191.49t A/Hp + 40.77t, FR(beam) = 0.25 +6899.31t A/Hp + 32.60t(where, FR means fire resistant time, t means thickness, A means cross-area and Hp means heated parameter).
The aims of this research is to develop a fire resistant admixture to enhance high-pressured pumping of high-strength concrete (HSC) with a compressive strength of 60~80 MPa. Generally, the efficiency of HSC high-pressured pumping is dramatically reduced due to entanglement of short fibers added to prevent fire spalling. Therefore, the fire resistant admixture that can facilitate pumping of fire resistant HSC is urgently needed presently. The fire resistant HSC mix is comprised of Polypropylene fiber, Nylon fiber and Polymer powder. The test results showed that the slump-flow was improved by approximately 70% of the HSC without fire resistant admixture. However, the air void content was increased slightly due to the addition. The standard design compressive strength at 28-days was satisfied, while its flexural strength was similar to the concrete without the admixture. Since the flexural strength was 12~15% of its compressive strength, the general trend of flexural to compressive strength ratio in normal concrete was maintained. Even though its elastic modulus was decreased by adding the admixture, the study results showed that the concrete can be used for construction since all of the test results exceeded the code requirements.

An increasing interest in fire safety engineering can currently be identified in Korea and overseas. The fire-resistant characteristics of spray coating material for fire protection with or without nano $Al(OH)_3$ colloid has been experimentally investigated and the results are presented in this paper. The fire-resistance characteristics of spray coating material with nano $Al(OH)_3$ were superior to those without $Al(OH)_3$. Especially, spray coating material with nano material showed that thermal characteristic in the early days was remarkably excellent.

The fire compartments with fire-resistant construction are installed in the principal structural parts of a building in order to reduce damage in the event of a building fire. As a fire may spread through a crack in the fire compartment, the firestop with secured performance is used according to the procedure, methods, and standards specified in the detailed operation guideline. According to the current detailed operation guideline, vertical members (wall penetration) and horizontal members (floor penetration) are classified into different categories respective to each other for the classification of the firestop. Therefore, an accreditation applicant must apply for the performance test for each structure even if the wall and the floor have the same structure. Also, Grade T is used for the firestop that penetrates the fire compartment. However, in the case of foreign countries, the use of Grade F for the firestop is allowed even if it penetrates the fire compartment. The result of the precedent studies also showed that there was a significantly low possibility of fire to spread even if Grade F was applied for a metallic duct that penetrated the fire compartment. In this study, the improved scheme for the classification and performance standard of firestops was presented by analyzing the results of precedent studies regarding the firestop and domestic and overseas firestop qualification systems.

To understand natural regeneration and stand development after fire in mixed broadleaved-coniferous forests of Sikhote-Alin Mountains, ten sample plots of $50m{\times}50m$ size were established in 1975 and 1983 at the stands burned by wildfires in 1973 and 1982, respectively. And, the number of naturally regenerated seedlings were monitored in two $50m{\times}4m$ subplots in each plot. The most fire-sensitive conifer species is Abies nephrolepis, while Betula costata is the most fire-sensitive broadleaved tree species. The most fire-resistant species were Q. mongolica, T. taquetii and A. mono. The results of 20 and 30 years after the fire showed that pioneer tree species, e.g. Populus, Salix, and Betula, were regenerated immediately at the early stage of stand development and grew where there is a mono canopy layer with high density. On the other hand, the densities of successors, e.g. Pinus koraiensis, Picea jezoensis, Abies nephrolepis, Acer mono and Tilia taquetii, which were present in the study plots before the fire, increased gradually. Naturally regenerated tree species after forest fire by the growth rate were divided into three groups according to their annual height growth. The seral tree species (Betula costata, Betula platyphylla, Padus maackii, Populus tremula and Sarix caprea) belong to the first group and have the highest growth rate (from 40 to 96 cm per year). The late successional broad-leaved trees (Tilia taquetii, Acer mono and Quercus mongolica) belong to the second group and have intermediate annual height growth (from 3.7 to 13.5 cm per year). The late successional coniferous species (Picea jezoensis, Pinus koraiensis and Abies nephrolepis) form the third group and have the least annual height growth (from 1.4 to 3.5 cm per year).
A Interior material, a main cause of fire-growth and generating toxic gas when it burns, should be dealt with great care in life safety design. Nonetheless, it has been used recklessly with undue attention to its contribution to fire in particular in entertainment occupancy and causes many victims in fire. Therefore, this study attempts to examine the current use of interior material in Korea and find out what to be improved and enhanced in terms of related regulations. Based on the comparison and analysis of the Korea regulation with those of advanced nations, suggestions are made for an effective and efficient improvement and complement to the current system. What can be suggested from this study are as follows. The use of interior material should be controlled under the unified regulation of fire-safety codes. Code should be set up so that the current construction enforcement should be applied in retroactive to those entertainment buildings that obtained a license prior to the implementation of the system certifying that the building is fire-resistant and fire-protective. The legislation should be made to control the fire-protection facilities of small-sized, underground entertainments. It should be obliged to present the blueprint displaying the use of interior material at the time of changing occupancy. Or, it should be compelled to report changes that go way without permit to the administrative office. A compulsory provision should be set up to have a fire-resistant performance to movable furniture. The classification index designating the fire hazard of interior material by flame spread rate and smoke toxicity and its test method should be established.

We could analyse the fire behavior using the developed software for fire safety assessment in a large space such as atrium. But Korean building law hasn't admitted the result of fire risk assessment in atrium. In the legislation fire resistant wall or shutter must be required between atrium and office rooms, That has obstructed development of building design and fire protection technique in Korea. From this point of view, we made scenarios of fire spread between atrium and office rooms, and then computed fire spread and fire phenomena using FASTLite and Breakl. In this study, we can decide that fire compartmentalization between atrium and office rooms doesn't require in Atrium building if the material and fire protection system were reliable. Consequently, Korean Fire Protection Regulations have to consider in direction of increasing freedom of building.
Existent wood wool cement boards are low-quality cement boards made out of wood chip wastes. Recently, however, they are produced by making wood chips into fibrous forms to have good looks and excellent performances in sound absorption and thermal insulation. Though they have been broadly used in the advanced countries, they were rather expensive products with limited use in Korea having no domestic manufacturers of them. Since 2005, however, it has been possible for the boards to be used in various fields due to their lowered prices and stable supplies by the arrival of domestic manufacturers. For the purpose of encouraging broad use of the boards, this research aims to explore their practical applications by way of assessing the flame retardant and fire resistant performances when they are applied to dry-wall system.

This study had the goal of analyzing the economic feasibility and constructability of a fire resistant curtain wall system using Light-weight Inorganic Composite Foam Board(LI-CFB). LI-CFBs, new materials with excellent fire resistance are being developed for use as the back panel of curtain wall and their fire resistance has already been analyzed through actual tests in earlier studies. In this study, a mock-up test involving the installation of the fire resistant curtain wall system on an actual building was conducted, and the system was compared with a common curtain wall system. This system is applied in the same way as a common curtain wall system. But the cutting LI-CFBs, which are brought from a factory, are used in the system and attached on the frame (mullion and transom). Even though the system requires more working time than the existing system, the LI-CFBs back panels are easy to cut and do not produce dust. Also, the panels are able to be assured the quality by checking damaged parts easily. Besides having a high level of fire resistance, the system's economic feasibility and constructability meets or exceeds those of the existing system.
The thermal creep is one of the major factors causing the buckle of steel columns in the fire events. But, few related studies have been reported to evaluate the factors affecting the thermal creep of steel column experimentally or numerically. In this study a series of Fire-resistant steel columns with three different slenderness ratios under a sustained load are tested under a uniform temperature up to six hours in order to evaluate the creep upon three selected factors, temperature, applied load, and column slenderness. Based on experimental results, a proposed creep strain rate model is established as the function of a single parameter of the load ratio of temperature LR(T) to determine the buckling time of steel column due to creep. Furthermore it is found that the creep can be neglected when LR(T) is smaller than 0.77.
