  • In this paper, we present a new fire animation and visualization scheme. The most difficult problem in creating fire animation is how to simulate the mechanism of emitting lighting and heat of fire. We attack the difficulty by presenting a hybrid scheme that combines the simulation scheme and the combustion process in voxelized space where the numerical solution of the classical fluid equations is implemented. Therefore, the combustion process is simulated at each voxel and the amount of heat generated at the voxel is estimated. The generated heat will increase the temperature at the voxel, where results in the increase of turbulent motion of fire. We also propose a visualization scheme that modifies the photon mapping algorithm in order to render fire and various lighting effects of fire to the environments.

  • In this study, the relative effectiveness of antimony trioxide-containing coat on fire retardancy of plywood, particleboard and medium density fiberboard was investigated and compared through ISO ignition test and inclined panel test with non-coated ones. The results obtained were summarized as fallows: Any treated materials was not ignited in inclined panel test with 5 minutes, but only particleboard among treated ones burned in ISO ignition test with fairly delayed time. The weight loss rate of plywood decreased with the increased addition level of fire-retardant and the least values were obtained in particleboard and MDF at addition level of 7% and 5% respectively. Carbonized area of wood based materials decreased with the increased addition level of fire retardant. The temperatures of back in plywood, particleboard treated with fire-retard ant coat containing 7% $Sb_2O_3$ showed the lowest but MDF did not show any effectiveness with the increased addition level. The first flash time of plywood treated with fire retardant coat containing 9% $Sb_2O_3$, MDF and particleboard treated with fire retardant coat containing 7% $Sb_2O_3$ were 257sec., 286.4sec., 165.4sec. respectively.

  • This study was performed to analysis the influence of smoke alarm detector on evacuation safety in housing fire. The analysis was conducted by CFAST fire simulation program and building EXODUS evacuation program. The effects of the earlier response time on evacuation safety were investigated by using evacuation simulation program with several steps of different response time and smoke alarm activation time for 4 occupants. The smoke detecter was activated 37.1 second after fire. The first two mortuary were occurred for 170 seconds of response time at the end of living room near exit. But for the 37.1 seconds of response time 4 occupants evacuated safely. From this study, the fire alarm detector is more important for safety evacuation in housing fire.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to find out the method and effects of fire needling on frozen shoulder in China. Methods : We searched journals using the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) and PubMed. The keywords were a combination of "fire needling", "fire needle", "burning acupuncture", "frozen shoulder", "adhesive capsulitis", "periarthritis". Results : There were 23 studies finally selected, 7 were case control studies and 16 were case series studies. There were 9 out of 14 main meridians and 31 kinds of acupoints. The most frequently adopted meridians were LI, SI and TE. The most frequently used acupoints were $LI_{15}$, $SI_9$ and $TE_{14}$. Adjacent points were used more often than distant points. They usually heated the needle before insertion and needle retention was mostly not done. 7 case control studies showed that fire needling reported better results than the filiform needle or electro-acupuncture treatment. 15 case series studies reported a significant improvement in fire needling on frozen shoulder patients. Conclusions : There have been many studies regarding fire needling on frozen shoulder in China. Further studies should be required and these can be applied to clinical practices in Korea.

  • Previous research has explored early expression of fire signs before the burning of insulation. To achieve this, typically, automatic inspections are used to detect gas emitted from odor capsules at electrical connection points; additionally, early fire signs can be expressed using visual inspection of changes in the appearance of temperature caps. However, early detection of electrical fire is often difficult because only specific inspections, which are not complex, are performed. Therefore, in this paper, we present complex inspection techniques, such as visual inspection, odor inspection, and automatic inspection, and propose a showing material of fire signs that can solve conventional problems. In addition, this study examines the conditions under which the candidate material for the showing material is designed, the composition of the candidate material selected based on the designed conditions, the manufacturing means used to produce the showing material considering the temperature for early expression of fire signs, and the performance of the produced showing material. Furthermore, we analyze various effects that can occur through the proposed display material.

  • In this study, the fire suppression characteristics of a water mist with natural wind in a road tunnel were calculated using the FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulation) code. In addition, the cooling and the chemical kinetic effects of water vapor on fire extinction ere investigated in a counterflow non-premixed flame using a detailed chemistry. As a result, the behavior of fire plume and the spray characteristics of water mist are modified remarkably with the increasing of wind velocity. In the case which is not the external natural wind, small droplets are more efficient in fire suppression than large droplets. However, the large droplets show better results on the fire suppression than the small droplets with the increasing of wind velocity. It can be estimated that the natural wind disturb the penetration of water droplets into the flame region and decrease the effect of oxygen dilution. Finally, it can be identified that the fire into the natural wind can be suppressed with smaller amount of $H_2O$ by flame stretching effect in the flame region than one in an enclosure, and the chemical kinetic effects of $H_2O$ on fire extinction are not affected significantly the velocity of natural wind.

  • In the present study, the effects of supply gas and water mist on the heptane pool fire extinguishing performance were investigated using the full cone and hollow cone twin-fluid atomizers. Air or nitrogen of 30 lpm (Liter per minute; L/min) was used as the supply gas, and the experiments were conducted under the water flow rate conditions of 0 lpm (i.e., discharge of air or nitrogen only) and 0.085 lpm (i.e., discharge of water mist with supply gas). Experimental results confirmed that the use of water mist discharge with the supply gas and full cone spray pattern reduced the fire extinguishing time as compared to that of only supply gas discharge and hollow cone spray pattern. In addition, for the discharge of water mist using the full cone twin-fluid atomizer, water mist significantly affected fire extinguishing performance, whereas the effect of the supply gas was less pronounced. On the other hand, for the discharge of water mist using the hollow cone twin-fluid atomizer, the fire extinguishing time was remarkably reduced by the supply of nitrogen, as compared with that of air, indicating that the supply gas as well as water mist can significantly affect fire extinguishing performance.

  • The validation of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was conducted for the under-ventilated fire in well-confined multi-compartments representative of nuclear power plant. Numerical results were compared with experimental data obtained by the OECD/NEA PRISME project. The effects of the numerical boundary conditions (B.C.) in ventilated system and the flame suppression model applied within FDS on the thermal and chemical environments inside the compartment were discussed in details. It was found that numerical B.C. on the vent flow resulting from over-pressure at ignition and under-pressure at extinction should be considered carefully in order to predict accurately the species concentrations rather than temperatures and heat fluxes inside the multi-compartment. The default information of suppression model applied within FDS resulted in artificial phenomena such as flame extinction and re-ignition, and thus the FDS results on the under-ventilated fire showed good agreement with the experimental results as the modified suppression criteria of the fuel used was adopted.

  • When concrete structures expose to fire, the structures were damaged accompanied with degradation of material properties of concrete. In order to determine the reuse of fire-damaged concrete structures, it is needed a careful determination considering conditions of fire damage, such as exposure temperature and exposure time, and also potential to restore fire damage. This study investigates on the evaluation of residual material properties of fire-damaged concrete under different post-fire curing regimes. An experimental study was performed on concrete samples to measure the dynamic elastic modulus by the impact resonance vibration method. Upon the experimental results, the evidence of restoration of material properties was confirmed on specific post-fire curing regimes, higher humidity conditions. Additionally, a correlation analysis was performed on the dynamic elastic modulus with the tensile strength for identifying the effects of post-fire curing regimes on both material properties of fire-damaged concrete.

  • The present study investigates the ventilation effects on smoke spreading characteristics in railway tunnels with the rescue stations. Experiments were carried out for n-heptane pool fires with a square length 4 cm at different fire locations, and the heat release rates (HRR) were obtained by the measurement of burning rates. In addition, using the commercial code (FLUENT), the present article presents numerical results for smoke behavior in railway tunnels with rescue station, and it uses the MVHS (Modified Volumetric Heat Source) model for estimation of combustion products resulting from the fire source determined from the HRR measurement. As a result, it is found that smoke propagation is prevented successfully by the fire doors located inside the cross-passages and especially, the smoke behavior in the accident tunnel can be controlled through the ventilation system because of substantial change in smoke flow direction in the cross-passages.
