In the present study, an experiment was conducted to investigate the heat and mass transfer performance of heat exchangers used in the condensing gas boiler. Two types of spiral circular fin-tube heat exchangers and a plain tube were tested in the flue gas of propane and dry air. Heat and mass transfer coefficients were measured and compared with the previous correlations. The experimental data for the sensible heat transfer of the plain tube reasonably agreed with the previous correlations for dry air and flue gas. However, the mass transfer coefficient of the plain tube was greater than the previous correlations. The pH, $NO_x$, and $SO_x$ data of condensate were provided.

This work is performed to investigate the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in the air side of finned-tube heat exchanger for air conditioner. Experimental apparatus and method are described to simulate the heat exchanger performance by using the three times enlarged model. The pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient were measured and compared for the heat exchangers with a plane fin and a commercial strip fin. The measured data for the strip fin agree well with those of prototype within a few percentages. For the plane fin, the measured data had similar trend to Gray & Webb's correlation at high air velocity, however a new correlation is needed to give more accurate prediction at low air velocity. It is found that most heat was transferred around the front row of the two-row heat exchanger, and the ratio of thermal load at the front tube row was increased for decreasing air velocity.

Effectiveness of a 3-pass plate finned-tube heat exchanger is calculated using heat exchangelet method by changing the shape of fin and the arrangement of tubes. The alternative refrigerant R134a is taken in this study. Conduction between neighboring tubes along the fin is taken into account in addition to convection between the fin and the surrounding air. Governing equations are obtained by using energy balance in a small control volume containing a tube and fins. They are numerically solved following the tube. Effect of tube-to-tube conduction is investigated in single-phase and two-phase flows with various fin shapes and arrangements of tubes. Improvement of effectiveness by fin perforation is studied too. The results shows that perforating fins, increasing the number of tubes, and increasing the distance between neighboring tubes at the same fin area enhance the effectiveness.

The water-to-air heat pump system requires relatively lower energy consumption and less installation space. The heat exchangers used for this system are the finned-tube type for the indoor unit and the double-tube type for the outdoor unit. Mathematical models for this system are developed and programmed in computer. Experimental data from various conditions are obtained and compared with calculated values from the computer simulation program. Differences of cooling capacity and COP are 1.25% and 0.47%, and those of heating capacity and COP are 0.51% and 0.13%, respectively. Simulation results are in good agreement with test results. Therefore, the developed program is effectively used for the design and the performance prediction of water-to-air heat pump system.
A shell-and-tube oil cooler with plate fins was suggested to improve the defect of the conventional shell-and-tube oil cooler. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the heat transfer performance on the shell side of shell-and-plate finned tube oil cooler with three different tube numbers(9, 13 and 19). Oil flowing on the shell side was cooled by cold water flowing inside the tubes. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger of an oil cooler consisted of one shell pass and two tube passes with the inner tube diameter of 8.82 mm and the tube length of 575 mm. From the experiment of shell-and-tube oil cooler, it was found that the heat transfer coefficient of oil cooler with 9 tubes, as oil flow rate was increased, was approximately 140% and 250% higher than that of 13 and 19 tubes, respectively. The heat transfer coefficient at the water flow rate of $3m^3/h$, also was 120% and 140% higher than that of 2.4 and $1.8m^3/h$, respectively.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the flow resistance and the heat transfer characteristics of V type circular fin-tube heat exchanger. Four kinds of V type fin having the same fin area and the different span wise angle tested numerically. Test data for the heat transfer, pressure drop and fin temperature were shown and discussed. The pressure drop and heat transfer increased for decreasing the span wise angle up to 58% and 25% respectively.

In this paper, the hybrid tube expander unit for fin and tube type heat exchanger are developed by means of enlarging and inserting the smooth tube with a small diameter to a finned tube having larger diameter. In other word, the tube expander tool that is easy to attach and remove from tube is developed. The hybrid tube expander unit developed in this study can move easily and enlarge the tube without fixing at tube sheet. Also, this unit has a function removing scales inside tube by replacing a tube expander ball.

The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performances of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. An empirical modeling equation has been derived from the experimental results using accelerated tests and it showed good predictions of the fouling characteristics of the slitted finned tube heat exchangers. However the modeling equation predicts only the fouling characteristics of new heat exchangers and it can not predicts fouling characteristics obtained from actual field data which contains the effect of hydrophilicity deterioration. Therefore an modified modeling equation is proposed and it shows good predictions of the actual fouling characteristics of finned-tube heat exchangers.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the performance and heat transfer characteristics of the heat exchanger for simultaneous cooling/heating heat pump. The heat transfer performance was measured using an air-enthalpy calorimeter and a constant temperature water bath, to obtain the performance evaluation and analysis of a fined tube heat exchanger. Six finned tube heat exchangers with louver fin were tested under a heating condition. Air-side heat transfer and friction were presented in terms of j-factor and f-factor. The heat transfer coefficient increased with decreasing the fin pitch, j-factor and f-factor on the fin pitch and the number of tube rows decreased with increasing Reair.

The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate and to model the air-side particulate fouling characteristics of the heat exchangers using accelerated particle loading system. The main variables of the modeling equation are face velocity and dust concentration. The modeling equation shows good agreements with the experimental results at the face velocity of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 m/s and the dust concentration of 1.28 and $3.84\;g/m^3$. It will be very useful to predict fouling characteristics such as variations of pressure drop and heat transfer capacity in finned-tube heat exchangers of air conditioners.
