The FHX (Forced-draft sodium-to-air Heat Exchanger) employed in the ADHRS (active decay heat removal system) is a shell-and-tube type counter-current flow heat exchanger with M-shape finned-tube arrangement. Liquid sodium flows inside the heat transfer tubes and atmospheric air flows over the finned tubes. The unit is placed in the upper region of the reactor building and has function of dumping the system heat load into the final heat sink, i.e., the atmosphere. Heat is transmitted from the primary cold sodium pool into the ADHRS sodium loop via DHX (decay heat exchanger), and a direct heat exchange occurs between the tube-side sodium and the shell-side air through the FHX tube wall. This paper describes the DHRS and the structural design of the FHX.
This paper reports the experimental results on heat transfer characteristics of R-22 and R-407C(HFC-32/125/134a 23/25/52 wt%) condensing inside horizontal smooth and finned tubes. The test condensers used In the study are double pipe heat exchangers of 7.5 mm ID, 9.5 mm OD smooth tube, and 60 finned micro-fin tube with 8.53 mm ID, 9.53 mm OD. Each of these tubes was 4 000 mm long tubes connected with an U-bend. These U type two-path test tubes are divided In 8 local test sections for the identification of the local condensing heat transfer characterisitcs and pressure drop, U-bend effects on condensing flows. Inlet quality is maintained 1.0, and refrigerant mass velocity is varied from 102.0 to $301.0kg/m^2{\cdot}s$. From the results, it was found that the pressure drop of the R-407C Increased, and heat transfer coefficient decreased compared to those of R-22. In comparison condensing heat transfer characteristics of micro-fm tube with those of smooth tube, increasing of condensing heat transfer coefficient was found outstanding compared to the increasing ratio of pressure drop. Furthermore, pressure drop In U-bend showed at most a 30 % compared to the total pressure drop in the test section.
Configuration of the inlet transition square duct (hereinafter referred to as "transition duct") for heat recovery steam generator (hereinafter referred to as "HRSG") in combined cycle power plant is limited by the construction type of HRSG and plant site condition. The main purpose of the present study is to analyze the effect of a variation in turbulent flow pattern by roof slop angle change of transition duct for horizontal HRSG, which is influencing heat flux in heat transfer structure to the finned tube bank. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is applied to predict turbulent flow pattern and comparisons are made to 1/12th scale cold model test data for verification. Re-normalization group theory (RNG) based k-$\epsilon$ turbulent model, which improves the accuracy for rapidly strained flow and swirling flow in comparison with standard k-$\epsilon$ model, is used for the results cited in this study. To reduce the amount of computer resources required for modeling the finned tube bank, a porous media model is used.
Liquid desiccant dehumidification system can be used effectively to save energy consumed in air conditioning as an alternative compared with conventional air conditioning systems by reducing latent heat load. The dehumidifier and the regenerator from the heart of this system. The latent part of the cooling load is handled using liquid desiccant. In this study, the experimental regenerator has been designed to study the regeneration characteristics of the aqueous triethylene glycol(TEG) system. The performance factors of the regenerator with finned tube heat exchanger were evaluated by a series of experimental runs. The regeneration process is highly dependent on the liquid desiccant conditions, such as, temperature, concentration and flow rate. In addition, the effects of the inlet air temperature, humidity and flow rate were discussed. Data obtained are useful for design guidance and performance analysis of a regenerator, particularly for a liquid desiccant cooling system.
In this study, the effects of design factors of finned-tube heat exchanger, such as fin spacing and fin array on the frost growth and heat exchanger performance are investigated under a frosting condition. The results show that the amount of frost, frost density and blockage ratio of air flow passage increase with decreasing fin spacing. Heat transfer rate increases momentarily at the initial stage of frosting and then decreases. After that heat transfer rate continues to increase again to reach a maximum value and then decreases dramatically. It is shown that the time required for heat transfer rate to reach a maximum value becomes shorter with decreasing fin spacing, and after a maximum value, heat transfer rate decreases very fast. The maximum allowable blockage ratio is introduced to determine the operation limit of a finned-tube heat exchanger operating under frosting condition and is obtained as a function of fin spacing. It is also shown that heat transfer rate of heat exchanger with staggered fin array increases about 17% and the amount of pressure drop of air increases about 1~2 mmH$_{2}$O, compared with those of in-line type heat exchanger under frosting condition.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the flow resistance and the heat transfer characteristics of V type circular fin-tube heat exchanger. Four kinds of V type fin having the same fin area and the different span wise angle tested numerically. Test data for the heat transfer, pressure drop and fin temperature were shown and discussed. The pressure drop and heat transfer increased for decreasing the span wise angle up to 58% and 25% respectively.
The performance and design analysis for a NWD cooling tower using a combined wet and dry type fill are numerically investigated and compared with the experimental results. The Stoecker's method is applied to the wet section and LMTD or NTU-Effectiveness method to the wet and dry sections. The efficiency ratio of the NWD cooling tower to a wet type crossflow cooling tower is 59.34%. The predicted result shows a good agreement with the experimental data within 1.4% error. Plume abatement is far better with a NWD cooling tower than a counterflow cooling tower. It costs less than a conventional wet/dry tower because the finned exchanger is eliminated. This method also leaves out complexity in structure and Intricacy in operation.
In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink for the thermal stability is performed numerically. The optimum design variables are obtained when the temperature rise and the pressure drop are minimized simultaneously. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained nonlinear optimization problem. The results show that when the temperature rise is less than 34.6 K, the optimal design variables are as follows; $B_{1}$ = 2.468 mm, $B_{2}$ = 1.365 mm, and t = 10.962 mm. The Pareto optimal solutions are also presented for the pressure drop and the temperature rise.
A finned tube type heat exchange module has been proposed for a multi-burner water tube boiler. Fin density and length increase in streamwise direction to equalize the evaporation for each module, which makes it difficult to apply conventional bulk design procedure. The design program has been improved by updating data for every row of tubes along the flow. A numerical simulation has been also conducted to evaluate the effect of inlet conditions and validated with experiment. The heat transfer of the first row has been underpredicted by the conventional Zhukauskas correlation, since the acceleration of the flow due to the blockage is not fully inflected. The fin tip temperature is also underpredicted by Bessel solution, because of the interaction with neighboring fins.
The water-to-air heat pump system requires relatively lower energy consumption and less installation space. The heat exchangers used for this system are the finned-tube type for the indoor unit and the double-tube type for the outdoor unit. Mathematical models for this system are developed and programmed in computer. Experimental data from various conditions are obtained and compared with calculated values from the computer simulation program. Differences of cooling capacity and COP are 1.25% and 0.47%, and those of heating capacity and COP are 0.51% and 0.13%, respectively. Simulation results are in good agreement with test results. Therefore, the developed program is effectively used for the design and the performance prediction of water-to-air heat pump system.
