  • Recently, the design of scaffolding systems has garnered considerable attention due to the increasing number of scaffold collapses. These incidents arise from the underestimation of imposed loads and the site-specific conditions that restrict the application of lateral restraints in scaffold assemblies. The present study is committed to augmenting the buckling resistance of vertical support members, obviating the need for supplementary lateral restraints. To achieve this objective, experimental and computational analyses were performed to assess the axial load buckling capacity of steel props, composed of two hollow steel pipes that slide into each other for a certain length. Three full-scale steel props with various geometric properties were tested to construct and validate the analytical models. The total unsupported length of the steel props is 6 m, while three pins were installed to tighten the outer and inner pipes in the distance they overlapped. Finite Element (FE) modeling is carried out for the three steel props, and the developed models were verified using the experimental results. Also, theoretical analysis is utilized to verify the FE analysis. Using the FE-verified models, a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the effect of different inserted pipe lengths on the steel props' axial load capacity and lateral displacement. Based on the results, the typical failure mode for the studied steel props is global elastic buckling. Also, the prop's elastic buckling strength is sensitive to the inserted length of the smaller pipe. A threshold of minimum inserted length is one-third of the total length, after which the buckling strength increases. The present study offers a prop with enhanced buckling resistance and introduces an equation for calculating an equivalent effective length factor (k), which can be seamlessly incorporated into Euler's buckling equation, thereby facilitating the determination of the buckling capacity of the enhanced props and providing a pragmatic engineering solution.

  • This paper compares the characteristics of three different algorithms for three-dimensional (3D) magnetotelluric (MT) modeling. These methods are developed by Mackie et al. (1994), Sasaki (1999) and Nam et al. (2007). The first and second methods are based on the finite difference method (FDM), while the last one the finite-element method (FEM). MT responses, apparent resistivities and phases, for a COMMEMI 3D-2 model show a good agreement with integral equation solutions and only minor discrepancies are found over the anomalous bodies in the 3D model. The computation time of the two methods based on FDM is short and the static divergence correction contributes to speed up. The FEM modeling scheme is accurate but slow.

  • Dynamic compaction (DC) is a useful method for improvement of granular soils. The method is based on falling a tamper (weighting 5 to 40 ton) from the height of 15 to 30 meters on loose soil that results in stress distribution, vibration of soil particles and desirable compaction of the soil. Propagation of the waves during tamping affects adjacent structures and causes structural damage or loss of performance. Therefore, determination of the safe or critical distance from tamping point to prevent structural hazards is necessary. According to FHWA, the critical distance is defined as the limit of a particle velocity of 76 mm/s. In present study, the ABAQUS software was used for numerical modeling of DC process and determination of the safe distance based on particle velocity criterion. Different variables like alluvium depth, relative density, and impact energy were considered in finite element modeling. It was concluded that for alluvium depths less than 10 m, reflection of the body waves from lower boundaries back to the soil and resonance phenomenon increases the critical distance. However, the critical distance decreases for alluvium depths more than 10 m. Moreover, it was observed that relative density of the alluvium does not significantly influence the critical distance value.

  • The continual extraction and indiscriminante use of groundwater for residential sectors could cause a decrease in the groundwater level in Para$\tilde{n}$aque river and Las Para$\tilde{n}$aque City; and allows saltwater to penetrate into the aquifer due to the proximity of Manila Bay. This study models the present condition and extent of saltwater intrusion in the aquifer bounded by Para$\tilde{n}$aque river River and Manila Bay. The model is simulated using a 3D finite element modeling software (FEMWATER) that is capable of modeling the groundwater flow condition in the aquifer. Moreover, the model can also be used to predict the future condition of the aquifer for better groundwater management. This study aims to raise public awareness of the extent of the problem and the possible side effects incurred. The model will serve as a basis for further studies on remediation techniques and saltwater intrusion control in the coastal aquifer of Para$\tilde{n}$aque river City.

  • This study investigated Austenite Grain Size (AGS) distribution in Low-Speed Round-Oval Rolling. Rolling experiments were done along with the AGS numerical modeling to characterize the final AGS distribution and its kinetics behavior. For bar rolling experiment, we utilized the pilot rolling mill, operating at 34 fixed rpm, at POSCO Technical Research Laboratories. To investigate the microstructural observation, the rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysis was combined with Hodgson's AGS evolution model. To consider the transient thermal history in the integrative AGS modeling, additivity rule was introduced. The integrated analysis revealed that static or meta-dynamic recrystallization is responsible for the AGS difference in the inner or outer region of rolled bar. Comparative study showed that the current AGS modeling approach can be used to model the overall AGS distribution in bar rolling processes. For more accurate AGS prediction, the AGS modeling method should be verified under the various rolling conditions such as different rolling speeds and different deformations.

  • This paper presents system design of the slotless double-side Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Machine system (PMLSM) through magnetic field analysis and dynamic modeling. In our analysis, 2-D analytical treatments based on the magnetic vector potential were adopted to predict magnetic field with space harmonics by PM mover magnetization and stator winding current. From these, the design parameters such as inductance, Back-emf, and thrust are estimated. And, the electrical dynamic modeling including synchronous speed is completed by calculation of a DC link voltage in effort to obtain the accurate mechanical power from Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation(SVPWM). Therefore, the system design of PMLSM is performed from estimation of design parameters according to PM size and coil turns in magnetic field and from calculation of a DC link voltage to satisfy base speed and base thrust represented as the maximum output power in dynamic modeling. The estimated values from the analysis are verified by the finite element method and experimental results.

  • This paper presents the numerical modelling technique for modeling the time-dependent behavior of geosynthetic reinforced soil wall under a sustained load. The applicability of power law-based creep models for modeling the creep deformations of geogrid and reinforced soil was first examined. The modeling approach was then used to simulate the long-term performance of a geosynthetic reinforced soil wall used in a bridge abutment. The results indicated that the power law-based models can be effectively used for modelling the long term behavior of geosynthetic reinforced walls under sustained loading. In addition, it was shown that, when using creep deformation susceptible backfill soils, the abutment wall and the sill beam may experience deformations exceeding allowable limits. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the numerical simulation accuracy according to the CFRP modeling method in the CFRP-Al alloy SPR (Self-Piercing Rivet) joint process. The mechanical properties of the CFRP, aluminum sheet are precisely obtained from the tensile test according to the loading direction. Additionally, the hardening curve of rivet was calculated from the inverse analysis of the machined rivet-ring compression test. For the CFRP-Al alloy SPR simulation, two kinds of the CFRP modeling methods were established based on the continuum and layer-by-layer approaches. The simulation results showed that the CFRP layer-by-layer modeling method can provide more reliable prediction shape of the fractured sheets and deformed rivet. This simulation technique can be used in evaluating the CFRP-Metal SPR performance and designing the SPR process conditions.

  • This paper proposes a nonlinear computational modeling approach for the behaviors of structural systems subjected to fire. The proposed modeling approach consists of fire dynamics analysis, nonlinear transient-heat transfer analysis for predicting thermal distributions, and thermomechanical analysis for structural behaviors. For concretes, transient heat formulations are written considering temperature dependent heat conduction and specific heat capacity and included within the thermomechanical analyses. Also, temperature dependent stress-strain behaviors including compression hardening and tension softening effects are implemented within the analyses. The proposed modeling technique for transient heat and thermomechanical analyses is first validated with experimental data of reinforced concrete (RC) beams subjected to high temperatures, and then applied to a bridge model. The bridge model is generated to simulate the fire incident occurred by a gas truck on April 29, 2007 in Oakland California, USA. From the simulation, not only temperature distributions and deformations of the bridge can be found, but critical locations and time frame where collapse occurs can be predicted. The analytical results from the simulation are qualitatively compared with the real incident and show good agreements.

  • Subduction has been the focal point of numerical studies for decades because it plays an important role in the Earth's mass and energy circulations and generates earthquakes and arc volcanoes which are closely related to the human lives. Among the studies on subduction, numerical modeling has been broadly applied to the quantitative studies on the subducting slab in the mantle which cannot be directly observed. In this study, we benchmark the numerical subduction modeling using a finite element package, COMSOL $Multiphysics^{(R)}$ and the results are consistent with the previously reported benchmark results.
