  • The demand for electric vehicles has increased because of environmental regulations. The lithium-ion battery, the most widely used type of battery in electric vehicles, is composed of a cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte. It is manufactured according to the pole plate, assembly, and formation processes. To improve battery performance and increase manufacturing efficiency, the manufacturing process must be optimized. To do so, simulation can be used to reduce wasted resources and time, and a finite-element method can be utilized. For high simulation quality, it is essential to reflect the material properties of the electrode by considering the pores. However, the material properties of electrodes are difficult to derive through measurement. In this study, the representative volume element method, which is a homogenization method, was applied to estimate the representative material properties of the electrode considering the pores. The representative volume element method assumes that the strain energy before and after the conversion into a representative volume is conserved. The method can be converted into one representative property, even when nonhomogeneous materials are mixed in a unit volume. In this study, the material properties of the electrode considering the pores were derived. The results should be helpful in optimizing the electrode manufacturing process and related element technologies.

  • In this paper, a conjugate heat transfer around cylinder with heat generation was investigated. Both forced convection and conduction was considered in the present finite element simulation. A finite element formulation based on SIMPLE type algorithm was adopted for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We compared the finite element solution with that of Ansys fluent 12.0, in which finite volume method was employed for spatial discretization. It was found that the finite element method gave more accurate solution than Ansys fluent 12.0. Further, it was found that the maximum temperature inside cylinder is positioned at the rear side due to the flow separation.

  • In this paper, an approximate time-effective approach to rigid-plastic finite element method is presented with its solution scheme and a volume compensation method is proposed to simulate rotary forging processes. The applicability is examined by comparing the results obtained by the presented approach with those by the conventional approach. The approach is applied to simulation of a rotary forging process fur a wheel bearing assembly. The analyzed results are compared with the experimental results.

  • In this study, the optimized initial hole shape for T-branch forming was proposed to obtain effective welding region. Design variables were determined by approximation analysis using volume constant condition. We performed 3D elastic-plastic FEM(Finite Element Method) analysis to simulate T-branch forming process. The variation of height and thickness of T-branch with various hole shapes was investigated. The optimized initial hole shape equation was obtained by using results for the numerical analysis.

  • In this Paper, a so-called volume-control method for nonlinear failure analysis of reinforced concrete cylindrical structures is proposed. The pressure node which defines uniform change of pressure on finite element is added into layered shell element utilizing in-plane constitutive models of reinforced concrete and layered formulation. With the pressure node formulation, one can control the change in volume enclosed by the cylindrical structures and determine the required change in pressure. An algorith of volume-control method is employed and failure analyses for RC cylindrical structures are carried out using proposed method.

  • We investigate the estimation of the moisture transfer coefficients in porous media by optimization technique which minimizes the functional defined by the squares error of the numerical solution of an inverse diffusion problem from their experimental values of the moisture content at the some time-steps. In this paper, we solve a diffusion equation numerically by the control volume finite element methods.

  • An attempt is made to develop a kind of hybrid numerical method for computations of the thermal stresses during a solidification process. In this algorithm, the phase-change heat transfer analysis is perrformed by a finite volume method(FVM) and the thermal stress analysis in a solidifying body by a finite element method(FEM). The temperatures at the grid points calculated in the heat transfer analysis are transferred to those of gauss points in elements by a bi-cubic surface patch technique for the thermal stress analysis. A hyperbolic-sine constitutive law is used to prescribe the inelastic strain rate of material. Results for the unidirectional solidification process of a pure aluminum are compared with those of others and shows good agreement.

  • The accurate permeability for preform is critical to model and design the impregnation of fluid resin in the composite manufacturing process. In this study, the in-plane and transverse permeability for a woven fabric are predicted numerically through the coupled flow model which combines microscopic with macroscopic flow. The microscopic and macroscopic flow which are flows within the micro-unit and macro-unit cell, respectively, are calculated by using 3-D CVFEM(control volume finite element method). To avoid checker-board pressure field and improve the efficiency on numerical computation, A new interpolation function for velocity is proposed on the basis of analytic solutions. The permeability of plain woven fabric is measured through unidirectional flow experiment and compared with the permeability calculated numerically. Based on the good agreement of the results, the relationships between the permeability and the structures of preform such as the fiber volume fraction and stacking effect can be understood. The reverse and the simple stacking are taken in account. Unlike past literatures, this study is based on more realistic unit cell and the improved prediction of permeability can be achieved. It is observed that in-plane flow is more dominant than transverse flow in the real flow through preform and the stacking effect of multi-layered preform is negligible. Consequently, the proposed coupled flow model can be applied to modeling of real composite materials processing.

  • In this paper optimization of volume fraction distribution in a thick hollow cylinder with finite length made of two-dimensional functionally graded material (2D-FGM) and subjected to steady state thermal and mechanical loadings is considered. The finite element method with graded material properties within each element (graded finite elements) is used to model the structure. Volume fractions of constituent materials on a finite number of design points are taken as design variables and the volume fractions at any arbitrary point in the cylinder are obtained via cubic spline interpolation functions. The objective function selected as having the normalized effective stress equal to one at all points that leads to a uniform stress distribution in the structure. Genetic Algorithm jointed with interior penalty-function method for implementing constraints is effectively employed to find the global solution of the optimization problem. Obtained results indicates that by using the uniform distribution of normalized effective stress as objective function, considerably more efficient usage of materials can be achieved compared with the power law volume fraction distribution. Also considering uniform distribution of safety factor as design criteria instead of minimizing peak effective stress affects remarkably the optimum volume fractions.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of magnetorheological(MR) damper based on analytical methodology and finite element analysis. The proposed MR damper consists of MR valve and gas chamber. The MR valve is constrained in a specific volume and the optimization problem identifies geometric dimensions of the valve structure that maximize the pressure drop of the MR valve or damping force of the MR damper. In this work, the single-coil annular MR valve structure is considered. After describing the schematic configuration and operating principle of MR valve and damper, a quasi-static model is derived based on Bingham model of MR fluid. The magnetic circuit of the valve and damper is then analyzed by applying the Kirchoff’s law and magnetic flux conservation rule. Based on the quasi-static modeling and the magnetic circuit analysis, the optimization problem of the MR valve and damper is built. The optimal solution of the optimization problem of the MR valve structure constrained in a specific volume is then obtained and compared with the solution obtained from finite element method.
