Analysis of Operating Characteristics of PM-Type Magnetic Circuit Breaker

  • This paper describes the operating characteristic analysis of the PM-type linear oscillatory actuator used as a magnetic circuit breaker for the electromagnetic field, electric circuit, and mechanical motion problems. Transient calculations are based upon a 2D finite element magnetic field solution including non-linearity of materials. Changes of the dynamic characteristics from the eddy current in the plunger are quantified from finite element analysis. A new laminated model is proposed to decrease the eddy current effect.

Finite element simulation of traditional and earthquake resistant brick masonry building under shock loading

  • Modelling and analysis of a brick masonry building involves uncertainties like modelling assumptions and properties of local material. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a calibration to evaluate the dynamic properties of the structure. The response of the finite element model is improved by predicting the parameter by performing linear dynamic analysis on experimental data by comparing the acceleration. Further, a nonlinear dynamic analysis was also performed comparing the roof acceleration and damage pattern of the structure obtained analytically with the test findings. The roof accelerations obtained analytically were in good agreement with experimental roof accelerations. The damage patterns observed analytically after every shock were almost similar to that of experimental observations. Damage pattern with amplification in roof acceleration exhibit the potentiality of earthquake resistant measures in brick masonry models.

  • In the present study, Navier-Stokes equation is numerically solved by use of a Finite analytic method to obtain the 2-dimensional flow field in the square cavity. The basic idea of F.A.M. is the incorporation of local analytic solutions in the numerical solution of linear or non-linear partial differential equations. In the F.A.M., the total problem is subdivided into a number of all elements. The local analytic solution is obtained for the small element in which the governing equation, if non-linear, to be linearized. The local analytic solutions are then expressed in algebraic form and are overlapped to cover the entire region of the problem. The assembly of these local analytic solutions, which still preserve the overall nonlinearity of the governing equations, results in a system of linear algebraic equations. The system of algebraic equations is then solved to provide the numerical solutions of the total problem. The computed flow field shows the same characteristics to physical concept of flow phenomena.

  • In this study, computer applied engineering (CAE) techniques are fully used to conduct structural and dynamic analyses of a whole huge wind turbine system including composite blades, tower and nacelle. For this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to predict aerodynamic loads of the rotating wind-turbine blade model. Multi-body dynamic structural analyses are conducted based on the non-linear finite element method (FEM) by using super-element method for composite laminates blade. Three-dimensional finite element model of a wind turbine system is constructed including power train(main shaft, gear box, coupling, generator), bedplate and tower. The results for multi-body dynamic simulations on the wind turbine's critical operating conditions are presented in detail.

Non-linear fire-resistance analysis of reinforced concrete beams

  • The non-linear structural analysis of reinforced concrete beams in fire consists of three separate steps: (i) The estimation of the rise of surrounding air temperature due to fire; (ii) the determination of the distribution of the temperature within the beam during fire; (iii) the evaluation of the mechanical response due to simultaneous time-dependent thermal and mechanical loads. Steps (ii) and (iii) are dealt with in the present paper. We present a two-step computational procedure where a 2D transient thermal analysis over the cross-sections of beams are made first, followed by mechanical analysis of the structure. Fundamental to the accuracy of the mechanical analysis is a new planar beam finite element. The effects of plasticity in concrete, and plasticity and viscous creep in steel are taken into consideration. The properties of concrete and steel along with the values of their thermal and mechanical parameters are taken according to the European standard ENV 1992-1-2 (1995). The comparison of our numerical and full-scale experimental results shows that the proposed mechanical and 2D thermal computational procedure is capable to describe the actual response of reinforced concrete beam structures to fire.

Shear response of lean duplex stainless steel plate girders

  • Carbon steel plate girders have been used on a large scale in the building industry. Nowadays, Lean Duplex Stainless Steel (LDSS) plate girders are gaining popularity as they possess greater strength and are more impervious to corrosion than those that are constructed from carbon steel. Regardless of their popularity, there is very limited information with regards to their shear behavior. In this paper, the non-linear finite element analysis was employed to investigate the shear behavior of LDSS plate girders. Parameters considered were the web thickness, the flange width, and the girders aspect ratio. The analysis revealed that although the shear behavior of the LDSS girders was no different from that of carbon steel plate girders, it had obviously been affected by the non-linearity of the material. Furthermore, the selected parameters were found to pronounce effect on the shear capacity of the LDSS girders. That is, the shear capacity increased considerably with web thickness, and increased slightly with flange width. However, it was reduced as the aspect ratio increased. Comparisons between the finite element analysis failure loads and those predicted by the current European Code of Practice revealed that the latter underestimated the shear strength of the LDSS plate girders.

  • 2차원 곡선보요소를 이용하여 대변형효과 및 탄소성거동을 고려한 유한요소법을 제시한다. Total Lagrangian 방법을 적용하며, 보요소는 평면응력요소로부터 유도된다. 또한, 임의의 단면을 갖는 평면뼈대 구조의 탄소성 해석을 수행하기 위하여 layered approach를 사용한다. 비선형 유한요소해석은 하중증분 또는 변위증분법을 적용한다. 본 연구에서 제안한 보요소의 거동과 정확도를 검증하기 위하여, 다른 문헌의 결과와 본 연구의 결과를 비교 분석한 해석예제를 제시한다.

Ultimate Longitudinal Strength Assessment of Ships' Hull Girders

  • Recently, International Association Classification Societies (IACS) has adopted the Common Structural Rules (CSR) for Bulk Carriers and Tankers, which specifies the requirement associated with the ultimate strength of hull girder structure. The theoretical background and the results of verification study are neither well summarized nor released. Furthermore, the requirement is not a form of deterministic formula but a form of program in which source code is not disclosed. The reliability of the non-linear structural analysis program is verified through the comparison with the results of the analysis and the model test. Then, the reliability of the ultimate strength requirement in CSR is checked by comparing with the results of rigorous non-linear analysis.

Post buckling mechanics and strength of cold-formed steel columns exhibiting Local-Distortional interaction mode failure

  • This paper reports the numerical investigation conducted to study the influence of Local-Distortional (L-D) interaction mode buckling on post buckling strength erosion in fixed ended lipped channel cold formed steel columns. This investigation comprises of 81 column sections with various geometries and yield stresses that are carefully chosen to cover wide range of strength related parametric ratios like (i) distortional to local critical buckling stress ratio ($0.91{\leq}F_{CRD}/F_{CRL}{\leq}4.05$) (ii) non dimensional local slenderness ratio ($0.88{\leq}{\lambda}_L{\leq}3.54$) (iii) non-dimensional distortional slenderness ratio ($0.68{\leq}{\lambda}_D{\leq}3.23$) and (iv) yield to non-critical buckling stress ratio (0.45 to 10.4). The numerical investigation is carried out by conducting linear and non-linear shell finite element analysis (SFEA) using ABAQUS software. The non-linear SFEA includes both geometry and material non-linearity. The numerical results obtained are deeply analysed to understand the post buckling mechanics, failure modes and ultimate strength that are influenced by L-D interaction with respect to strength related parametric ratios. The ultimate strength data obtained from numerical analysis are compared with (i) the experimental tests data concerning L-D interaction mode buckling reported by other researchers (ii) column strength predicted by Direct Strength Method (DSM) column strength curves for local and distortional buckling specified in AISI S-100 (iii) strength predicted by available DSM based approaches that includes L-D interaction mode failure. The role of flange width to web depth ratio on post buckling strength erosion is reported. Then the paper concludes with merits and limitations of codified DSM and available DSM based approaches on accurate failure strength prediction.

유압액추에이터용 U자형 시일의 해석 및 실험적 고찰 (Computational and Experimental Investigation on U-type Seal of Hydraulic Actuator)

  • Seals are usually made from elastomer, a kind of rubber, and it has the non-linearity and hyper-elasticity. U-type seals are used to prevent the leakage of internal fluid sealed in hydraulic actuator because they have more excellent performance than O-rings or rectangular seals. As a core part of hydraulic actuator, U-type seal gives much effect on performance and reliability of actuator. This study considers an NBR U-type seal under high pressure of a hydraulic actuator, and provides its deformation, stress-strain characteristic and contact force using the non-linear finite element analysis. Analysis results are compared with the experimental ones performed by the self-developed testing equipment. Verification result shows that this study presents a good application process for the effective design of U-type seals under high operation pressure.
