In the finite element modelling of long-span cable-stayed bridges, there are a lot of uncertainties brought about by the complex structural configuration, material behaviour, boundary conditions, structural connections, etc. In order to reduce the discrepancies between the theoretical finite element model and the actual static and dynamic behaviour, updating is indispensable after establishment of the finite element model to provide a reliable baseline version for further analysis. Traditional sensitivity-based updating methods cannot support updating based on static and dynamic measurement data at the same time. The finite element model is required in every optimization iteration which limits the efficiency greatly. A convenient but accurate Kriging surrogate model for updating of the finite element model of cable-stayed bridge is proposed. First, a simple cable-stayed bridge is used to verify the method and the updating results of Kriging model are compared with those using the response surface model. Results show that Kriging model has higher accuracy than the response surface model. Then the method is utilized to update the model of a long-span cable-stayed bridge in Hong Kong. The natural frequencies are extracted using various methods from the ambient data collected by the Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System installed on the bridge. The maximum deflection records at two specific locations in the load test form the updating objective function. Finally, the fatigue lives of the structure at two cross sections are calculated with the finite element models before and after updating considering the mean stress effect. Results are compared with those calculated from the strain gauge data for verification.

In this paper we discuss some recovery of H(div)-conforming flux approximations from the equilibrated fluxes of Ainsworth and Oden for quadratic finite element methods of second-order elliptic problems. Combined with the hypercircle method of Prager and Synge, these flux approximations lead to a posteriori error estimators which provide guaranteed upper bounds on the numerical error. Furthermore, we prove some superconvergence results for the flux approximations and asymptotic exactness for the error estimator under proper conditions on the triangulation and the exact solution. The results extend those of the previous paper for linear finite element methods.

The finite element analysis is frequently used to predict dynamic responses of complex structures. Since the predicted responses often differ from experimentally measured ones, updating of the finite element models is performed to make the finite element results agree with the measured ones. Among several model updating methods, one is to use FRF(frequency response function) data without a modal analysis. This paper investigates characteristics of the model updating method in order to improve the method. The investigation is focused on how to obtain FRFs for unmeasured rotational displacements and how to consider damping. For the investigation simulated data and experimental data for a cantilever beam are used.

This paper presents the results of finite element analysis on the seismic response of a soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall subjected to a prescribed earthquake record. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the maximum wall displacement occurs at the top, exhibiting a cantilever type of wall movement. Also revealed is that the increase in reinforcement force is more pronounced in the upper part of the reinforced zone, resulting in a more or less uniform distribution. None of the design guidelines appears to be able to correctly predict the dynamic force increase when compared with the results of finite element analysis. The calculation model adopted by the NCMA guideline, however, appears to compare better with the results of finite element analysis as well as field survey than the FHWA guideline. Based on the findings from this study, a number of implications to the current design methods are discussed.

None of the design guidelines appears to be able to correctly predict the dynamic force increase when compared with the results of finite element analysis. The results demonstrated that there exist critical stiffness and length of reinforcement beyond which further increase would not contribute to additional reinforcing effect. Based on the findings from this study, a number of implications to the current design methods are discussed.
In this paper, a numerical methodology for health monitoring of weldment was proposed using finite element method coupled with continuum damage mechanics. The welding-induced residual stress distribution of T-joint weldment was calculated using a commercial finite element package SYSWELD+. The distribution of latent damage was evaluated from the stress and strain components taken as the output of a finite element calculation. Numerical examples were given to demonstrate the usefulness of this so-called "post-processing approach" in the case of welding-induced damage assessment.
When the temperature of a structure varies, there is a tendency to produce changes in the shape of the structure. The resulting actions may be of considerable importance in the analysis of the structures having non-prismatic members. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the modeling, analysis and behavior of the non-prismatic members subjected to temperature changes with the aid of finite element modeling. The fixed-end moments and fixed-end forces of such members due to temperature changes were computed through a comprehensive parametric study. It was demonstrated that the conventional methods using frame elements can lead to significant errors, and the deviations can reach to unacceptable levels for these types of structures. The design formulas and the dimensionless design coefficients were proposed based on a comprehensive parametric study using two-dimensional plane-stress finite element models. The fixed-end actions of the non-prismatic members having parabolic and straight haunches due to temperature changes can be determined using the proposed approach without necessitating a detailed finite element model solution. Additionally, the robust results of the finite element analyses allowed examining the sources and magnitudes of the errors in the conventional analysis.

Bellows is a familiar component in piping systems as it provides a relatively simple means of absorbing thermal expansion and providing system flexibility. In routine piping flexibility analysis by finite element methods, bellows is usually considered to be straight pipe runs modified by an appropriate flexibility factor; maximum stresses are evaluated using a corresponding stress concentration factor. The aim of this study is to develop a bellows finite element, which similarly includes more complex shell type deformation patterns. This element also does not require flexibility or stress factors, but evaluates more detailed deformation and stress patterns. The proposed bellows element is a 3-D, 2-noded line element, with three degrees of freedom per node and no bending. It is formulated by including additional 'internal' degrees of freedom to account for the deformation of the bellows corrugation; specifically a quarter toroidal section of the bellows, loaded by axial force, is considered and the shell type deformation of this is include by way of an approximating trigonometric series. The stiffness of each half bellows section may be found by minimising the potential energy of the section for a chosen deformation shape function. An experiment on the flexibility is performed to verify the reliability for bellows finite element.

The reinforced concrete farm silos on the elastic foundatin are widely used in agricultural engineering because of their superior structural performance, economy and attractive appearance. Various methods for the analysis and design of farm silo, such as the analytical method, the finite difference method, and the finite element methods, can be used. But the analytical procedure can not be applied for the intricate conditions in practice. Therefore lately the finite element method has been become in the structural mechanics. In this paper, a method of finite element analysis for the cylindrical farm silo on ffness matrix for the elastic foundation governed by winkler's assumption. A complete computer programs have been developed in this paper can be applicable not only to the shell structures on elastic foundation but also to the arbitrary three dimensional structures. Assuming the small deflection theory, the membrane and plate bending behaviours of flat plate element can be assumed mutually uncoupled. In this case, the element has 5 degrees of freedom per node when defined in the local coordinate system. However, when the element properties are transformed to the global coordinates for assembly, the 6th degree of freedom should be considered. A problem arises in this procedure the resultant stiffness in the 6th degree of freedom at this node will be zero. But this singularity of the stiffness matrix can be eliminated easily by merely replacing the zero diagonal by dummy stiffness.

The expanding technique of the Stochastic Finite Element Method(SFEM) is proposed in this paper for adapting direct integration methods in stochastical dynamic analysis of structures. Grafting the direct integration methods and the SFEM together, one can deal with nonlinear structures and nonstationary process problems without any restriction. The stochastical central diffrence and stochastic Houbolt methods are introduced to show the expanding technique, and their adaptabilities are discussed. Results computed by the proposed method (the Stochastic Finite Element Method in Dynamics: SFEMD) for two degree-of-free- dom system are compared with those obtained by Monte Carlo Simulation.
