  • PET bottles are main]y manufactured by the stretch blow-molding process. In order to improve the thickness distribution to avoid crack generation at bottom region of one-piece PET bottle, process analysis of stretch blow-molding using a finite element method has been carried out. Finite element analysis has been carried out using ABAQUS/Standard. CREEP user subroutine provided in ABAQUS has been used to model PET behavior that is rate sensitive. Among the process parameters, the effect of plunger movement to thickness distribution of bottle has been considered by axisymmetric analysis. A modified process of plunger movement, which yields more uniform thickness distribution, has been proposed. 3D FE analysis has been done to confirm the validity of the proposed process.

  • Modified Gurson model (Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model) was used to analyze crack growth in M(T) and C(T) specimens. A commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit is used to account for total failure of material point by cavity coalescence, and crack growth was simulated by finite element extinction. Crack growth resistance curve was obtained by calculating J-integral. Crack growth under residual stress was investigated.

  • Three dimensional (3D) non-linear finite element analysis of offshore pipeline is investigated in this work with the help of general purpose software Abaqus. The general algorithm for the finite element approach is introduced. The 3D seabed mesh, limited to a corridor along the pipeline, is extracted from survey data via Fledermous software. Moreover soil bearing capacity and coefficient of frictions, obtained from the field survey report, and are introduced into the finite element model through the interaction module. For a case of study, a 32inch pipeline with API 5L X65 material grade subjected to high pressure and high temperature loading is investigated in more details.

  • The key issue for the finite element analysis (FEA) of section steel reinforced concrete (SRC) structure is how to consider the bond-slip performance. However, the bond-slip performance is hardly considered in the FEA of SRC structures because it is difficult to achieve in the finite element (FE) model. To this end, the software developed by Python can automatically add spring elements for the FE model in ABAQUS to considering bond-slip performance. The FE models of the push-out test were conducted by the software and calculated by ABAQUS. Comparing the calculated results with the experimental ones showed that: (1) the FE model of SRC structure with the bond-slip performance can be efficiently and accurately conducted by the software. For the specimen with a length of 1140 mm, 3565 spring elements were added to the FE model in just 6.46s. In addition, different bond-slip performance can also be set on the outer side, the inner side of the flange and the web. (2) The results of the FE analysis were verified against the corresponding experimental results in terms of the law of the occurrence and development of concrete cracks, the stress distribution on steel, concrete and steel bar, and the P-S curve of the loading and free end.

  • An efficient one dimensional finite element model has been presented for the dynamic analysis of composite laminated beams, using the efficient layerwise zigzag theory. To meet the convergence requirements for the weak integral formulation, cubic Hermite interpolation is used for the transverse displacement ($w_0$), and linear interpolation is used for the axial displacement ($u_0$) and shear rotation (${\psi}_0$). Each node of an element has four degrees of freedom. The expressions of variationally consistent inertia, stiffness matrices and the load vector are derived in closed form using exact integration. The formulation is validated by comparing the results with the 2D-FE results for composite symmetric and sandwich beams with various end conditions. The employed finite element model is free of shear locking. The present zigzag finite element results for natural frequencies, mode shapes of cantilever and clamped-clamped beams are obtained with a one-dimensional finite element codes developed in MATLAB. These 1D-FE results for cantilever and clamped beams are compared with the 2D-FE results obtained using ABAQUS to show the accuracy of the developed MATLAB code, for zigzag theory for these boundary conditions. This comparison establishes the accuracy of zigzag finite element analysis for dynamic response under given boundary conditions.

  • The extensive use of honeycomb sandwich structures has led to the need to understand and analyze their low velocity impact response. Commercially available finite element software provides a possible analysis tool for this type of problem, but the validity of their material properties models for honeycomb materials must be investigated. Three different problems that focus on the effect of differences in honeycomb material properties on static and dynamic response are presented and discussed. The first problem considered is a linear elastic static analysis of honeycomb sandwich beams. The second is a nonlinear elastic-plastic analysis of a circular honeycomb sandwich plate. The final problem is a dynamic analysis of circular honeycomb sandwich plates impacted by low velocity projectiles. Results are obtained using the ABAQUS final element code and compared against experimental results. The comparison indicates that currently available material properties models for honeycomb materials can be used to obtain a good approximation of the behavior of honeycomb sandwich structures under static and dynamic loading conditions.

  • The paper investigates the dynamic buckling behaviour of a laminated composite stiffened cylindrical shell using the commercial finite element code ABAQUS. The numerical model of the composite shell is validated by static tests. In particular, the experimental collapse test is numerically simulated by a quasi static analysis carried out by both ABAQUS/Standard and ABAQUS/Explicit. The behaviour in the post-buckling field and the collapse load obtained by the analyses are close to the experimental data. The validated model is then used to study the dynamic buckling behaviour with ABAQUS/Explicit. The effects of the loading magnitude and of the loading duration are investigated, implementing in the analysis also first-ply failure criteria. It is observed that the dynamic buckling load is highly affected by the loading duration.

  • This paper presents a discussion of the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) when applied for the analysis of concrete elements reinforced with glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. The purpose of such nonlinear FEA model development is to create a tool that can be used for numerical parametric studies which can be used to extend the existing (and limited) experiment database. The presented research focuses on the numerical analyses of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements. FEA of concrete members reinforced with linear elastic brittle reinforcements (like GFRP) presents unique challenges when compared to the analysis of members reinforced with plastic (steel) reinforcements, which are discussed in the paper. Specifically, the behaviour and failure of GFRP reinforced members are strongly influenced by the compressive response of concrete and thus modelling of concrete behaviour is essential for proper analysis. FEA was performed using the commercial software ABAQUS. A damaged-plasticity model was utilized to simulate the concrete behaviour. The influence of tension, compression, dilatancy, mesh, and reinforcement modelling was studied to replicate experimental test data of beams previously tested at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Recommendations for the finite element modelling of beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements are offered. The knowledge gained from this research allows for the development of a rational methodology for modelling GFRP reinforced concrete beams, which subsequently can be used for extensive parametric studies and the formation of informed recommendations to design standards.
