The present research works investigated into the low velocity impact characteristics of DP 780 high strength steel sheet with 1.7 mm in thickness subjected to free boundary condition using three-dimensional finite element analysis. Finite element analysis was carried out via ABAQUS explicit code. Hyper-elastic model and the damping factor were introduced to improve an accuracy of the FE analysis. An appropriate FE model was obtained via the comparison of the results of the FE analyses and those of the impact tests. The influence of the impact energy and nose diameter of the impact head on the force-deflection curves, impact time, absorption characteristics of the impact energy, deformation behaviours, and stress-strain distributions was quantitatively examined using the results of FE analysis. The results of the FE analysis showed that the absorption rate of impact energy lies in the range of the 70.7-77.5 %. In addition, it was noted that the absorption rate of impact energy decreases when the impact energy increases and the nose diameter of the impact head decreases. The local deformation of the impacted region was rapidly increased when the impact energy was larger than 76.2 J and the nose diameter was 20 mm. A critical impact energy, which occur the instability of the DP780, was estimated using the relationship between the plastic strain and the impact energy. Finally, characteristics of the plastic energy dissipation and the strain energy density were discussed.
The finite element method(FEM) is the most widely used and powerful method for structural analysis. In general, in order to analyze complex and large structures, we have used the FEM. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computation time for solving accurately by the FEM the dynamic problem of a system with many degree-of-freedom, because the FEM has to deal with very large matrices in this case. Therefore, it was very difficult to analyze the vibration for plate structures with a large number of degrees of freedom by the FEM on a personal computer. For overcoming this disadvantage of the FEM without the loss of the accuracy, the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method(FE-TSCM) was developed. The concept of the FE-TSCM is based on the combination of modeling technique in the FEM and the transfer technique in the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). The merit of the FE-TSCM is to take the advantages of both methods, that is, the convenience of the modeling in the FEM and the computation efficiency of the TSCM. In this paper, the forced vibration analysis algorithm of plate structures is formulated by the FE-TSCM. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the efficiency of the FE-TSCM, results of frequency response analysis for a rectangular plate, which was adopted as a computational model, were compared with those by the modal analysis method and the direct analysis method which are based on the FEM.
The blower which is installed in a FCEV(fuel cell electric vehicle) may cause noise due to misalignment and unbalance of mechanical components that rotate at high speed. One of the key points in efforts to minimize the noise radiation from a blower is the knowledge of the main radiating component and the relation between the surface vibration of a blower and the sound pressure. In this research, the blower model is developed based on FEM(finite element method). FE(finite element) model is reliable by correlation of frequencies and MAC(modal assurance criterion) values between EMA(experimental modal analysis) and FEA(finite element analysis). This model is applied to predict the vibration of a blower by using inverse force identification method and predict the radiating noise by using BEM(boundary element method). Comparing the frequencies of resonance and those mode shapes between EMA and FEA, a structural modification of the FE model is evaluated for reducing the parameters of the blower noise.
A drive shaft is used to transmit torque and rotation through the connection of components of a drive train. Recently, a monobloc drive shaft without welding regions is developed to improve the safety of the drive shaft. The drive shaft bears the shear stress induced by torque. The objective of this paper is to investigate into the structural safety of a monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Elasto-plastic finite element (FE) analysis is performed to estimate the deformation behavior of the drive shaft and stress-strain distribution in the drive shaft. Several techniques are used to create finite element (FE) model of the monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Through the comparison of the results of FE analyses with those of experiments from the viewpoint of rotational angle, appropriate correction coefficients for different load conditions are estimated. The safety of the tubular drive shaft is examined using the results of FE analyses for different load conditions. Finally, it is noted that the designed tubular drive shaft has a sufficient structural safety.
Purpose: Numerical and experimental study was performed to evaluate the effect of peening temperature on the residual compressive stress distribution and magnitude of residual compressive stress at the material surface. Methods: A compressive air-propelled warm peening equipment was designed and manufactured for warm peening test. Results: 3D dynamic finite element (FE) model of the warm peening test was proposed and validity of the proposed FE model was verified by comparing the predicted residual stresses with the measured residual stresses in the open literature. Maximum warm peening temperature and a proper peening time were investigated with the proposed FE model. Conclusion: Compressive residual stress increased remarkably with peening temperature increased. But, peening temperature is greater than $350^{\circ}C$, the effect of peening temperature disappeared. Therefore, maximum peening temperature possibly applicable for warm peening industry might be $350^{\circ}C$ and peening time is 45s.
Rheological behaviour of fresh concrete is an important factor in controlling concrete quality. It is recognized that the measurement of the slump is not a sufficient test method to adequately characterize the rheology of fresh concrete. To further understand the slump measurement and its relationship to the rheological properties, an elasto-viscoplastic, 2-D axisymmetric finite element (FE) model is developed. The FE model employs the Bingham material model to simulate the flow of a slump test. An experimental program is carried out using the Slump Rate Machine (SLRM_II) to evaluate the finite element simulation results. The simulated slump-versus-time curves are found to be in good agreement with the measured data. A sensitivity study is performed to evaluate the effects of yield stress, plastic viscosity and cone withdrawal rate on the measured flow curve using the FE model. The results demonstrate that the computed yield stress compares well with reported experimental data. The flow behaviour is shown to be influenced by the yield stress, plastic viscosity and the cone withdrawal rate. Further, it is found that the value of the apparent plastic viscosity is different from the true viscosity, with the difference depending on the cone withdrawal rate. It is also confirmed that the value of the final slump is most influenced by the yield stress.
Performance of shear-deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips/sheets is analyzed through numerical simulations on four-point bending tests. The numerical simulations are carried out using the finite element (FE) program ABAQUS. A micromechanics-based constitutive model (Liang et al. 2006) is implemented into the FE program ABAQUS to model CFRP strips/sheets. The predicted results are compared with experiment data (Khalifa and Nanni 2002) to assess the accuracy of the proposed FE analysis approach. A series of numerical tests are conducted to investigate the influence of stirrup lay-ups on the shear strengthening performance of the CFRP strips/sheets, to illustrate the influence of the damage parameters on the microcrack density evolution in concrete, and to investigate the shear and flexural strengthening performance of CFRP strips/ sheets. It has been shown that the proposed FE analysis approach is suitable for the performance prediction of RC beams strengthened with CFRP strips/sheets.
Compared to previous in-vitro test, FE model showed reliable motion patterns. A finite element model of a 50th percentile male neck was developed to study the mechanics of whiplash injury while the rear impacts. The model was consisted of the whole cervical vertebrae including part of occipital, intervertebral discs. which were modeled using linear viscoelastic materials and posterior elements. The sliding interfaces were defined to simulate contact phenomena in facet joints and in odontoid process. All ligaments and atlanto-occipital membrane were modeled as nonlinear bar elements. Only muscle elements were not considered. Motion of each cervical vertebra was obtained from the dynamic simulation with a MADYMO model for 15 km/h $40\%$ rear end offset impacts. Soft tissue neck injury(STNI) was investigated with a developed FE model. In FE model analysis, the high stress was appeared at C3/C4 disc in offset impact. Further research is still needed in order to improve the developed neck FE model for many different crash patterns.
In order to analyze accurately the vibration of a structure by using the finite element method (FEM), we have to model a analytical structure as a numerical model with many degrees-of-freedom. However, in this case, the FEM needs much computation time and storage. The authors developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for overcoming the drawback of the FEM. In this paper, the authors apply the FE-TSCM to the in-plane vibration analysis of general plates with various shapes. Two numerical examples, a rectangular plate and a triangular plate, are used to compare the results of the FE-TSCM and the FEM. Through the numerical calculation, we confirm that the FE-TSCM can be applied to the in-plane free or forced vibration analysis of the general plates with various shapes and is effective to in-plane vibration analysis of general plates.
This paper describes the finite element (FE) analysis results of a 1/4 scale model of a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) by considering the tension stiffening effect, which is a result of the bond effect between the concrete and the steel. The tension stiffening model is assumed to be an exponential form based on the relationship between the average stress and the average strain of the concrete. The objective of the present FE analysis is to evaluate the ultimate internal pressure capacity of the PCCV, as well as its failure mechanism, when the PCCV model is subjected to a monotonous internal pressure beyond is design pressure capacity. With the commercial code ABAQUS, the FE analysis used two concrete failure criteria: a 2-dimensional axi-symmetric model with modified Drucker-Prager failure criteria and a 3-dimensional model with a damaged plasticity mod디. The results of our FE analysis on the ultimate pressure capacity and failure modes of PCCV have a good agreement with the experimental data.
