A two-dimensional transient heat transfer model for reactive gas assisted laser cutting process with a moving Gaussian heat source is developed using a numerical finite difference technique. The kerf width, melting front shape and temperature distribution were calculated by using the boundary-fitted coordinate system to handle the ejection of workpiece material and heat input from reaction and evaporation. An analytical solution for cutting front movement was adopted and numerical simulation was performed to calculate the temperature distribution and melting front thickness. To calculate the moving velocity of cutting front, the normal distribution of the cutting gas velocity was used. The kerf width was revealed to be dependent on the cutting velocity, laser power and cutting gas velocity.

a mathematical model is presented to describe the current distribution on a rotaing disk electrode under the galvanostatic pulse conlitions. A numerical technique by finite difference method to the transient convective diffusion equation, coordinate transformation and separation of variables to Laplace equation, and an iterative algorithm to solve the above equations simtltaneously with approximate boundary conditions were developed. An experimental investigated based on copper deposition in a copper sulfate-sulfuric acid system was performed and satisfactory agreement was obtained between expermental and theoretical current distribution. The current distribution of copper deposition is secondary current distribution within the experimental conditions. Dimensionless variables, N and J as well as Wagner number were used to determine the criteria for the uniformity of current distribution.

The reflectivity of a grid ferrite electromagnetic wave absorber is analyzed using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, which is usually used in anechoic chambers for EMI / EMS test. The frequency dispersive characteristics of ferrite medium and its boundary condition are modeled using magnetic flux in addition to E- and H-fields. By applying Floquets theorem, FDTD analysis of the grid ferrite absorber with periodic infinite array is simplified as a unit cell problem. The method of homogenization which is mainly utilized in the calculation of absorber reflectivity as a low frequency technique takes only into account volume fraction of the unit cell of the absorber except for the structure of medium geometry. However, the presented method in this paper can analyze the geometry effect of the unit cell with its medium characteristics up to high frequency region.
An explicit 4th order time integration scheme for solving the convection-diffusion equation is discussed in this paper. A system of ordinary differential equations are derived first by discretizing the spatial derivatives of the relevant PDE using the finite difference method. The integration of the ODEs is then carried out using a 4th order scheme and a self-adaptive technique based on the spatial grid spacing. For a non-uniform spatial grid, different time step sizes are used for the integration of the ODEs defined at different spatial points, which improves the computational efficiency significantly. A numerical example is also discussed in the paper to demonstrate the implementation and effectiveness of the method.
This paper presents the result of a computational study on the wake characteristics of two tanker models, i.e. HSVA and Mystery hull forms. The focus of the study is on the distributions of axial, radial and tangential velocities of the two hull forms in way of the propeller, especially over the propeller disk. The effect of bilge vortices on the velocity distribution is also concerned. For the computation of stern and wake flows of the two hull farms, the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes(RANS) equations are numerically solved by the second order finite difference method, which employs a four stage Runge-Kutta scheme with a residual averaging technique and the Baldwin-Lomax model. The calculated pressure distributions on the hull surface and the axial, radial and tangential velocity distributions over the propeller disk are presented for the two hull forms. Finally, the result of wake analysis for the computed wake distribution over the propeller disk is given in comparison with those for the experimental wake distribution fur the both hull forms.

This paper analyze the steady state performance of a self-acting air lubricated slider bearing in hard disk/head system. Modified Reynolds' equation is derived from the steady state compressible Navier-Stokes equation, under slip-flow conditions. Finite difference technique and numerical procedure are described by using Newton-Raphson iteration method to slove the non-linear equations. These techniques are applied to conventional slider bearings and the effects of molecular mean free path(MMFP) for a recording surface of hard disk are shown. The calculation procedure developed here, wide applicabilities in practical head design procedures, and converges rapidly.

A multi-region model for solute transport through saturated soils has been developed to describe preferential flow. The model consists of numerous discrete pore groups, which are characterized by a discrete dispersion coefficient, flow velocity, and porosity . The hydraulic properties for each pore group are derived from a soil's hydraluic conductivity and soil water characteristic functions . Flow in pore group is described by the classical advection-disersion equation (ADE). An implict finite difference scheme was applied to the governing equation that results in a block-tridiagonal system of equations that is very efficient and allows the soil to be divided into any number of pore groups. The numerical technique is derived from methods used to solve coupled equations in fluid dynamics problems and can also be applied to the transport of interacting solutes. The results of the model are compared to the experimental data from published papers. This paper contributes on the characteristics of the method when applied to the parallel porosity model to describe preferential flow of solutes in soil.

The cooling problem of the hot internal pipe flow has been investigated. Simultaneous conduction, convection, and radiation were considered with azimuthally varying convective heat loss at the pipe wall. A complex, nonlinear integro-differential radiative transfer equation was solved by the discrete ordinates method (or called S$_{N}$ method). The energy equation was solved by control volume based finite difference technique. A parametric study was performed by varying the conduction-to-radiation parameter, optical thickness, and scattering albedo. The results have shown that initially the radiatively active medium could be more efficiently cooled down compared with the cases otherwise. But even for the case with dominant radiation, as the medium temperature was lowered, the contribution of conduction became to exceed that of radiation.n.
The wave mode calculation of a large-scale optical system in comparison to the working wavelength is practically impossible because the computational cost increases exponentially. In this paper, we propose a method that can obtain the optical mode in a large-scale optical system. The method carries out simulations by dividing the calculation area into blocks and moving along the light axis along which the light propagates. By applying this method to the calculation of resonant modes in a ring-type optical resonator, which is mainly used for ring laser optical gyro sensors, the efficiency of the proposed method was verified.

The motion of a fluid in the closed annular cavity formed by two concentric vertical cylinders with externally finned tube has been analysed by a numerical solutions of the equation of momentum and energy. For the calculation procedure, the fluid is assumed to have constant thermo-dynamic and transporties except for the density, which is temperature-dependent in the buoyancy term of the vertical momentum equation (Boussinesq approximation). The govern ins equations for velocity and temperature are solved by a finite difference technique which incoorporates a scheme for treating the coupled variables. Results are presented for a range of the Rayleigh number and for various values of the fin height and the number of fins.
