  • In this research, on-line model for prediction of effective strain distribution hi strip on finishing mill process is prescribed. It has been developed using several selected non-dimensional parameters and previously made average effective strain model via series of finite element process simulations, $\Delta$$\varepsilon$ was introduced to describe the effective strain distribution in strip. To confirm adequate non-dimensional variables uniqueness test was done. And to decide the order of polynomial in on-line model equation tendency test for each variables was done. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with finite element calculation results.

A Neural Net Type Process Model for Enhancing Learning Compensation Function in Hot Strip Finishing Rolling Mill (열연 마무리 압연기에서 압연속도 학습보상기능개선을 위한 신경망형 공정 모델)

  • This paper presents a neural net type process model for enhancing learning compensation function in hot strip finishing rolling mill. Adequate input and output variables of process model are chosen, the proposed model was designed as single layer neural net. Equivalent carbon content, strip thickness and rolling speed are suggested as input variables, and looper's manipulation variable is proposed as output variable. According to simulation result using process data to show the validity of the proposed process model, neural net type process model's outputs give almost similar data to process output under same input conditions.

  • This paper proposes a looperless tension control algorithm which is robust to disturbance and tensional variation in rolling process using SVR(Support Vector Regression). Hot rolling process which is global technology to coil steel after continuous finishing process for welded bars followed by roughing mill process, becomes hot issue. Finishing mill process not only makes it possible to produce ultra thin steel strip(0.8 mm) but enhance the quality of terminals of coil, which increases the productivity due to faster process. Constant tension control between stands in hot rolling process is essential to enhance the quality of steel. Sensorless tension control is under research by some advanced companies to replace the conventional tension control method because in continuous finishing mill process, it is impossible to install the looper used in conventional control system. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Tungsten Carbide(WC) Roll is widely used in finishing stands of wire rod mill. This report is about the manufacturing method of WC roll with excellent wear resistance. To enhance wear resistance, WC content has been increased to the maximum extent while binder content such as Co, Ni, Cr has been minimized. Part of WC is replaced with TiC having more wear resistant than WC. WTiC powder has been used to prevent weight unbalance resulting from the difference of specific weight when adding TiC. The roll manufactured by this method, is having more wear resistance than the existing rolls when applying to the final stand of the finishing mill. This report shows that WC is the critical factor of wear resistance in WC rolls and an approprite amount of TiC effects wear resistance and when adding TiC, using WTiC powder is better.

  • Width variation of the top and bottom ends of steel at finishing rolling in a plate, has been investigated. It was found that width variation after finishing rolling is affected by edging, broadside rolling ratio, longitudinal rolling ratio, width shape after broadside rolling, temperature, width-to-thickness ratio, and so on. A neural network modelling of back propagation has been conducted on the width variation during rolling. Based on these prediction models, a width control system, by which the roll opening and closing of the hydraulic AWC edger can be adjusted during edge rolling in finishing rolling passes, has been developed. Compared to conventional width model, the neural network model is much accurate in a model. The width control system is applied to a newly built production mill.

  • Finishing mill (FM) is set up with rolling conditions (rolling speed, rolling force, roll gap, etc.) calculated by a FSU (Finisher Setup) model considering the temperature, qualities and size of a transfer bar and a strip at the entry and exit of FM before the transfer bar is rolled through FM. If the accuracy of setup is low mass flow unbalance occurs, so that the accuracies of the strip thickness and width become lower or rolling operation fault occurs.   • To have high flatness quality of hot rolled strip in the hot strip finishing mill train, a new inter-stand tension profile measuring device of segmented looper roll type(coined as Flatness Sensing Inter-stand Looper, FlatSIL) and a new flatness control system have been developed in this study. The device measures the strip tension profile across the strip width and informs the strip wave pattern to new flatness control system where work roll bending mode to relieve the strip wave is determined. The existing automatic shape control system which uses laser type shape-meter installed at the outlet of the last finishing mill stand strip tension between down coiler and last finishig mill since the latent wave concealed by the strip tension between down coiler and last finishing mill stand cannot be measured by the laser distance-meter. Thus the existing shape control system is not able to control the flatness through the full strip length. The new flatness control system, however, works for full strip length during strip rolling as far as the tension profile measuring device and work roll bender are on. With the new flatness control system, work roll bender is automatically controller to minimize the latent wave of the running strip and the flatness quality as well as strip travelling stability has been noticeably improved from strip head through body to tail.

  • Crop minimization of the top and bottom ends of hot rolled plate, in a plate, in a plate mill, has been investigated. The existing model to determine the edging pattern at the finishing rolling pass was not reasonable to get high width accuracy and rolling yields. New models including width prediction have been formulated by using neural network model of back propagation learning algorithm and statistical analysis based on the actual production rolling data to give the optimal pattern for minimizing trimming loss. Using these models, at a given rolling condition of broadside pass and finishing pass and the permissible condition of width variation, it was possible to minimize crip at the top and bottom ends according to optimum procedure in plate mill. An application to improve the plan view pattern reduced width variation by 23% and crop length by 30% on average with an effective fishtail crop shape.

  • Studies on ski-end shape control at the top end of rolling plate in heavy thick plate mill by using FEM analysis and measuring system have been performed. Plate shape behaviour at the top-end on rolling by the two different methods in finishing rolling process has been observed. One is to minimize the height of ski-end by using pass line based on the relational model between shape factor and pick-up and the other one is to prevent turn down problem caused by the impact between table roller and down bended plate on rolling by using roll speed difference. To minimize the height of ski-end, the prediction models based on the FEM analysis and measuring data was developed. The control method of ski - end shape on finishing rolling process was applied in actual mill and the height of ski-end was reduced by about 50% compared with conventional operation.

  • A diagnosis methodology for thickness quality in hot finishing mill is proposed based on multivariate statistical analysis. The thickness of hot strip is a key quality factor that is measured by x-ray thickness gauge. Currently, the thickness quality is guaranteed by upper and lower limit of thickness deviation from target thickness. But if any over-limit is occurred, there is no in-line method to identify the causes.
