Recently, a cryptographic construct, called fuzzy vault, has been proposed for crypto-biometric systems, and some implementations for fingerprint have been reported to protect the stored fingerprint template by hiding the fingerprint features. In this paper, we implement the fuzzy fingerprint vault, combining fingerprint verification and fuzzy vault scheme to protect fingerprint templates. To implement the fuzzy fingerprint vault as a complete system, we have to consider several practical issues such as automatic fingerprint alignment, verification accuracy, execution time, error correcting code, etc. In addition, to protect the fuzzy fingerprint vault from the correlation attack, we propose an approach to insert chaffs in a structured way such that distinguishing the fingerprint minutiae and the chaff points obtained from two applications is computationally hard. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that the proposed approach provides higher security than inserting chaffs randomly without a significant degradation of the verification accuracy, and our implementation can be used for real applications.

A fingerprint verification system based on a set of invariant moment features and a nonlinear Back Propagation Neural Network(BPNN) verifier is proposed. An image-based method with invariant moment features for fingerprint verification is used to overcome the demerits of traditional minutiae-based methods and other image-based methods. The proposed system contains two stages: an off-line stage for template processing and an on-line stage for testing with input fingerprints. The system preprocesses fingerprints and reliably detects a unique reference point to determine a Region-of-Interest(ROI). A total of four sets of seven invariant moment features are extracted from four partitioned sub-images of an ROI. Matching between the feature vectors of a test fingerprint and those of a template fingerprint in the database is evaluated by a nonlinear BPNN and its performance is compared with other methods in terms of absolute distance as a similarity measure. The experimental results show that the proposed method with BPNN matching has a higher matching accuracy, while the method with absolute distance has a faster matching speed. Comparison results with other famous methods also show that the proposed method outperforms them in verification accuracy.

Fingerprint-based verification system has been used for a very long time. Because of their well-known uniqueness and immutability, fingerprint is one of the most widely used biometric features. However, fingerprint identification system has such a critical weakness that the performance of verification is reduced drastically for a poor input fingerprint. In this paper, an image enhancement algorithm using enhanced direction and enhanced binary and aiming image is used to mitigate the problem in the preprocessing. The goal of image enhancement is to estimate the quality of input fingerprint image and to improve the clarity of ridge and valley structures of input fingerprint image. Also, a ridge orientation extraction method using index table is proposed to improve the speed of verification. It is shown by the experiments that proposed fingerprint verification system improves the minutiae extraction accuracy and performance of verification.

Biometric-based authentication can provide strong security guarantee about the identity of users. However, security of biometric data is particularly important as the compromise of the data will be permanent. To protect the biometric data, we need to store it in a non-invertible transformed version. Thus, even if the transformed version is compromised, the actual biometric data remains safe. In this paper, we propose an approach to protect finger-print templates by using the idea of the fuzzy vault. Fuzzy vault is a recently developed cryptographic construct to secure critical data with the fingerprint data in a way that only the authorized user can access the secret by providing the valid fingerprint. We modify the fuzzy vault to protect fingerprint templates and to perform fingerprint verification with the protected template at the same time. This is challenging because the fingerprint verification is performed in the domain of the protected form. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that the proposed approach can perform the fingerprint verification with the protected template.

Recently, in the security token based authentication system, there is an increasing trend of using fingerprint for the token holder verification, instead of passwords. However, the security of the fingerprint data is particularly important as the possible compromise of the data will be permanent. In this paper, we propose an approach for secure fingerprint verification by distributing both the secret and the computation based on the fuzzy vault(a cryptographic construct which has been proposed for crypto-biometric systems). That is, a user fingerprint template which is applied to the fuzzy vault is divided into two parts, and each part is stored into a security token and a server, respectively. At distributing the fingerprint template, we consider both the security level and the verification accuracy. Then, the geometric hashing technique is applied to solve the fingerprint alignment problem, and this computation is also distributed over the combination of the security token and the server in the form of the challenge-response. Finally, the polynomial can be reconstructed from the accumulated real points from both the security token and the server. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that our proposed approach can perform the fuzzy vault-based fingerprint verification more securely on a combination of a security token and a server without significant degradation of the verification accuracy.
Fingerprint verification method based on minutiae has been widely used for its speed and size stemming from utilizing only a few data, but it is vulnerable to some errors caused by the false minutiae extractions. A number of suggestions have been made to correct these problems. However, because it is very difficult to avoid all the external factors, such as noises that occur when fingerprints are collected, and all the internal factors that occur during the process of them, there is a limit in minimizing errors by improving the whole process. On the other hand, a fingerprint verification method based on images yields fewer errors because it makes direct comparison between images not using minutiae. Image-based fingerprint verification method has its limitations in aligning images with accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a new methodology to improve the performance utilizing both image-based and minutiae-based verification methods effectively. As the result of experimenting with both images and minutiae, the false accept rate and the false reject rate have been improved from 2.7% to 0.8% and from 6.5% to 5.5%, respectively.

In this paper, we discuss the user-customized interaction for intelligent home environments. The interactive system is based upon the integrated techniques using speech recognition and fingerprint verification. For essential modules, the speech recognition and synthesis were basically used for a virtual interaction between the user and the proposed system. In experiments, particularly, the real-time speech recognizer based on the HM-Net(Hidden Markov Network) was incorporated into the integrated system. Besides, the fingerprint verification was adopted to customize home environments for a specific user. In evaluation, the results showed that the proposed system was easy to use for intelligent home environments, even though the performance of the speech recognizer was not better than the simulation results owing to the noisy environments

In this paper, we describe biometric watermarking techniques for secure user verification on the remote, multimodal biometric system employing both fingerprint and face information, and compare their effects on verification accuracy quantitatively. To hide biometric data with watermarking techniques, we first consider possible two scenarios. In the scenario 1, we use a fingerprint image as a cover work and hide facial features into it. On the contrary, we hide fingerprint features into a facial image in the Scenario 2. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that the Scenario 2 is superior to the Scenario 1 in terms of the verification accuracy of the watermarking image.

In this paper, we propose a fingerprint verification algorithm for the embedded system based on the minutia extracted using the image quality, the minutia structure, and the Sequency and the orientation of ridges. After the pre- and the post-processing, the true minutia are selected, thus it shows high reliability in the fingerprint verification. In matching process, we consider the errors caused by shift, rotation, and pressure when acquiring the fingerprint image and reduce the matching time by applying a local matching instead of a full matching to select the reference pair. The proposed algorithm has been designed and verified in Arm920T environment and various techniques for the realtime process have been applied. Time taken from the fingerprint registration through out the matching is 0.541 second that is relevant for the realtime applications. The FRR (False Reject Rate) and FAR (False Accept Rate) show 0.079 and 0.00005 respectively.
