  • In order to enhance sinterability of W-Cu composites used for heat sink materials, mechanical alloying process where both homogeneous mixing of component powders and fine dispersion of minor phase can be easily attained was employed. Nanostructured W-Cu powders prepared by mechanical alloying showed W grain size ranged of 20-50 nm and were able to be efficiently sintered owing to the fine particle size as well as uniform distribution of Cu phase. The thermal properties such as electrical resistivity, coefficient of thermal expansion and thermal conductivity were evaluated as functions of temperature and Cu content. It was found that the coefficient of thermal expansion could be controlled by changing Cu content. The measured electrical resistivities and thermal diffusivities were also varied with Cu content. The thermal conductivities calculated from the values of resistivities and diffusivities showed similar tendency as a function of temperatures. However, this is in contradiction with thermal conductivities of pure W and Cu which decrease with increasing temperature.

  • Carbothermal reduction has been one of the important processes for the production of ceramic raw materials such as silicon carbide, silicon nitride, boron carbide, etc. The process has also been one of several trials for the recovery of ZnO from ZnO-containing waste. It usually involves two consecutive steps: the evolution of Zn vapor and its oxidation with air. In this study a ZnO-containing raw material is reduced by carbon at $1250^{\circ}C$ and the evolved Zn vapor is oxidized with air, resulting in fine powders of ZnO. computer programs, THERMO and PYROSIM developed by MINTEK, are used to simulate the process thermodynamically and the results are compared with the experimental results. It is shown that the ZnO-containing raw material can be reduced and can form fine ZnO with the yield as high as 98.7% under a proper condition. Based on these results, a process is engineered for the production of ZnO in a rotary kiln at a rate of 3 tons/day. The produced ZnO powders show properties suitable to the usual applications in ceramic industries with a purity of > 95wt% and an average particle size of ∼3${\mu}m$.

  • In order to obtain spherical fine powder, we have developed a new method of high-pressure water atomization system using swirl water jet with the swirl angle $(\omega)$. The effect of nozzle apex angle $(\theta)$ upon the morphology of atomized powders was investigated. Molten copper was atomized by this method, with $\omega=0.2$ rad (swirl water jet) and $\omega=0$ rad (conical water jet). It was found that the median diameter $(D_{50})$ of atomized powders decreased with decreasing $(\theta)$ down to 0.35 rad in each $\omega$, but under ${\theta}<\;0.35$ rad, $D_{50}$ increased abruptly with decreasing $\theta$ for $\omega=0$ rad, while it was still decreased with decreasing $(\theta)$ for $\omega=0.2$ rad.

  • Wire electrical explosion(WEE) has been used for the production of fine metal particles. In WEE, electrical powder was stored and compressed into capacitor and released to produce fine particles through evaporation and condensation. In this study, the effect of applied voltage on the size of copper powders was investigated. High tension was added up to the explosion device by dividing 4 steps. At voltages lower than 5.2 kV, the fraction of powders finer than $44{\mu}m$ was almost negligible. The effectiveness of explosion increased sharply with increased voltage over 5.8 kV. At the highest voltage of 6.4 kV, more than 80% of explosion products were finer than $44{\mu}m$.

  • A CPGFRP(Carbon Powder Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics) sensor was fabricated for fine crack detection of structures. The electrical resistance of the sensor was measured on condition of various composition of carbon powders and thickness of bundle of glass fibers. The resistance was decreased as the increase of the content of carbon powders and the TEX of the glass fibers. In the case of loading on CPGFRP sensor, because inner crack was propagated, the part of percolation structures was disconnected. The sensor is superior to carbon fiber for the detecting ability of fine crack.

  • The ultra-fine tungsten carbide(WC) powders have been actively used in the cemented carbides industry, because they have excellent mechanical properties such as high hardness, strength, and toughness. In this study, ultra-fine WC-Co alloys powders have been fabricated by thermochemical and thermomechanical process such as spray conversion process or high energy ball milling. The non-coated end-mill which is made of ultra-fine tungsten carbide is investigated by measuring cutting force, tool wear, tool life, and surface roughness profile according to cutting length. The machining test was conducted with high hardened workpiece and their performances are investigated in high speed cutting conditions. Also, the relationship between the machining characteristics and the Co contents are investigated under various high speed cutting conditions.

  • A new innovative composite material is textile reinforced cementitious composite (TRCC). To achieve high flexural performance researchers suggest polymer modification of TRCC matrices. In this study, nine ready mix repair mortars commonly used in construction industry and the production of TRCC elements were examined. Mechanical properties such as compressive and flexural strength, drying shrinkage were studied. Being a significant durability concern, alkali silica reaction tests were performed according to related standards. Results showed that, some ready repair mortar mixes are potentially reactive due to the alkali silica reaction. Two of the ready mortar mixes labelled as non-shrinkage in their technical data sheets showed the highest shrinkage. In this experiment, researchers designed new matrices. These matrices were fine grained concretes modified with polymer additives; latexes and redispersible powders. Two latexes and six redispersible powder polymers were used in the study. Mechanical properties of fine grained concretes such as compressive and flexural strengths were determined. Results showed that some of the fine grained concretes cast with redispersible powders had higher flexural strength than ready mix repair mortars at 28 days. Matrix composition has to be designed for a suitable consistency for planned production processes of TRCC and mechanical properties for load-carrying capacity.

  • $LiNiO_2$ cathode powders with fine size have been synthesized by spray pyrolysis from the spray solution with citric acid and ethylene glycol. The as-prepared powders with spherical shape, porous structure and micron size turned into $LiNiO_2$ powders with micron size and regular morphology after post-treatment at $800^{\circ}C$. The initial discharge capacities of the $LiNiO_2$ powders changed from 199 to 171mAh/g when the concentrations of the citric acid and ethylene glycol added to the spray solutions were changed from 0 to 1 M. The maximum initial discharge capacity of the $LiNiO_2$ powders obtained from the spray solution with citric acid and ethylene glycol was 198 mAh/g when the lithium component added to the spray solution was 6 mol% excess of the stoichiometric amount. The discharge capacities of the fine-sized $LiNiO_2$ powders dropped from 198 to 163 mAh/g by the 30 th cycle at a current density of 0.1 C.

  • The synthesis of NiTi alloy powders by hydrogen reduction and dehydrogenation process of NiO and $TiH_2$ powder mixtures is investigated. Mixtures of NiO and $TiH_2$ powders are prepared by simple mixing for 1 h or ball milling for 24 h. Simple-mixed mixture shows that fine NiO particles are homogeneously coated on the surface of $TiH_2$ powders, whereas ball milled one exhibits the morphology with mixing of fine NiO and $TiH_2$ particles. Thermogravimetric analysis in hydrogen atmosphere reveals that the NiO and $TiH_2$ phase are changed to metallic Ni and Ti in the temperature range of 260 to $290^{\circ}C$ and 553 to $639^{\circ}C$, respectively. In the simple-mixed powders by heat-up to $700^{\circ}C$, agglomerates with solid particles and solidified liquid phase are observed, and the size of agglomerates is increased at $1000^{\circ}C$. From the XRD analysis, the presence of liquid phase is explained by the formation and melting of $NiTi_2$ inter-metallic compound due to an exothermic reaction between Ni and Ti. The simple-mixed powders, heated to $1000^{\circ}C$, lead to the formation of NiTi phase but additional Ni-, Ti-rich and Ti-oxide phases. In contrast, the microstructure of ball-milled powders is characterized by the neck-grown particles, forming $Ni_3Ti$, Ti-oxide and unreacted Ni phase.

  • Sintering behavior of nanostructured(NS) W-Cu powders prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) was investigated as a function of sintering temperature. MA NS W-2owt%Cu and W-3owt%Cu composite powders with the crystal size of 20-30 nm were annealed at 90$0^{\circ}C$, and thermal characteristics of those powders were investigated by DSC. Sintering behavior of MA NS W-Cu composite powders was investigated during the solid-state sintering and the Cu-liquid phase sintering. The new nanosintering phenonenon of MA W-Cu powders at solid-state sintering temperature was suggested to explain the W-grain growth in the inside of MA powders. The sintering densification of MA NS W-Cu powders was enhanced at Cu melting temperature by arrangement of MA powders, i.e., the first rearrangement of MA powders was occurred, and then the rearrangement of W-grains in the sintered parts was also took place during liquid-phase sintering, i.e., the second rearrangement was happened. Due to the double rearrangement process of MA NS W-Cu powders, the high sintered density with more than 96%o was obtained and the fine and high homogeneous state of W and Cu phases was achieved by sintering at 1200 $^{\circ}C$.
