  • Effects of the dosage change, from 0 to 2.0 wt% based on cement weight, of naphthalenic (NSF) and polycarboxylic(NT-2) superplasticizers, on the fluidity of cement paste substituted by 10 wt% II-anhydrite and fly ash respectively as well as II-anhydrite and fly ash itself were investigated. Dispersion properties between particles in suspension were investigated by zeta potential test. Initial fluidity and slump loss in the paste system were observed through mini-slump and apparent viscosity changes with elapsed time. Zeta potential on the particle surface was a tendency to increase according to increasing of NSF dosage. Especially, zeta potential of fly ash has the highest value among all particles equivalent to NSF dosage. In the fluidity of cement paste substituted by inorganic particles, the specimen with substitution of 10 wt% II-anhydrite and fly ash for cement was more effective than cement itself to improve initial fluidity and retain stable fluidity of cement paste. In addition, effect of NT-2 and NSF to improve the fluidity of cement paste, addition of 1.0 wt% NT-2 was more effective than 1.5wt% NSF.

  • Recently, the fabrication process of W-Cu nanocomposite powders has been researched to improve the sinterability by mechanochemical process (MCP), which consists of ball milling and hydrogen-reduction with W- and Cu-oxide mixture. However, there are many control variables in this process because the W oxides are hydrogen-reduced via several reduction stages at high temperature over 80$0^{\circ}C$ with susceptive reduction conditions. In this experiment, the W-15 wt%Cu nanocomposite powder was fabricated with the ball-milling and hydrogen-reduction process using W and CuO powder. The microstructure of the fabricated W-Cu nanocomposite powder was homogeneously composed of the fine W particles embedded in the Cu matrix. In the sintering process, the solid state sintering was certainly observed around 85$0^{\circ}C$ at the heating rate of 1$0^{\circ}C$/min. It is considered that the solid state sintering at low temperature range should occur as a result of the sintering of Cu phase between aggregates. The specimen was fully densified over 98% for theoretical density at 120$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h with the heating rate of 1$0^{\circ}C$/min.

  • In this study, $FeSi_2$ as high temperature performance capable thermoelectric materials was manufactured by powder metallurgy. The as-casted Fe-Si alloy was annealed for homogenization below $1200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. Due to its high brittleness, the cast alloy transformed to fine powders by ball-milling, followed by subsequent compaction (hydraulic pressure; 2 GPa) and sintering ($1200^{\circ}C$, 12 h). In order to precipitate ${\beta}-FeSi_2$, heat treatment was performed at $850^{\circ}C$ with varying dwell time (7, 15 and 55 h). As a result of this experiment thermoelectric phase ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ was quickly transformed by powder metallurgical process. There was not much change in powder factor between 7h and 55h specimens.

  • Mechanical properties of carbon coated $SiC_f/SiC$ composites have been investigated, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of microstructure. Especially, the fracture behavior of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites by the induction of carbon coating layers has been examined. The matrix region of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites with ultra-fine SiC powders were consolidated by a liquid phase sintering (LPS) process, using a sintering additive of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ powder compound. In this composite, plain and satin- woven Tyranno SA fabrics were also utilized as a reinforcing material. A carbon interfacial layer was coated around satin-woven SiC fabrics. The characterization of LPS-$SiC_f/SiC$ composites was investigated by means of SEM and three point bending test.

  • A high-energy mechanical milling (HEMM) process was introduced to improve sinter-ability, and rapid sintering of spark plasma sintering (SPS) under pressure was used to make ultra fine grain (UFG) of Ti-Nb-Mo-CPP composites, which have bio-attractive elements, for increasing mechanical properties. Ti-Nb-Mo-CPP composites were successfully fabricated by SPS at $1000^{\circ}C$ within 5 minutes under 70 MPa using HEMMed powders. The Vickers hardness of the composites increased with increased milling time and addition of CPP contents. Biocompatibility and corrosion resistance of the Ti-Nb-Mo alloys were improved by addition of CPP, and the Ti-35%Nb-10%Mo-10%CPP alloy had better biocompatibility and corrosion resistance than the Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy.

  • Magnetic properties, microstructure and texture of NdFeB magnets fabricated by a modified hot working process from commercial melt-spun powders (Magnequench; MQPA, MQPB and MQPB+) have been investigated. The hot-pressed isotropic magnet made from MQPA powder, which contains higher Nd content than that of MQPB or MQPB+, shows higher coercivity. The magnet also shows homogenous and fine grains with higher coercivity for higher consolidation pressure. The hot-deformed MQPA magnet shows a strong anisotropy along the press direction with homogeneous platelet Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B grains of 50∼100nm in thickness and 200∼500nm in length. The hot-deformed MQPB+ magnet, however, shows low remanence and low coercivity. The microstructure of the magnet consists of two areas; undeformed Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B grains and well-aligned but large grains with 3∼4 $\mu$m in length. Low Nd content attributes to the formation of the two different area.

  • The effects of ball-milling time(0 ~4 hrs) have been investigated on the change of powder characteristics, compaction behavior (compaction pressure range : 200 ~400MPa) and sinterability (1700'c in Ha atmosphere) of two different UO$_2$ powders (ex-ADU and ex-AUC) prepared by the wet process. It is observed that, while the ex-ADU UO$_2$ was little affected, the ex-AUC UO$_2$ was largely affected by the ball-milling treatment. This may be attributed to the characteristics of particle size formed during the preparation step, i.e.., the former has a small average size of about 1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, while the latter has a relatively large average size of about 301n. It appeared that the effective size reduction by ball-milling treatment is limited to the particle size larger than l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and to the extent of maximum decrease in size of about 0.5tn. In the case of ex-AUC UO$_2$, it is observed that the particle size decreased with ball-milling time and green density and sintered density of the pellets prepared from ball-milled powder increased compared with those of pellets prepared from the as-received powder under the same conditions. This may be attributed mainly to the fine particles formed during the ball-milling treatment.

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of the duration of mechanical alloying on the microstructures and mechanical properties of ODS ferritic/martensitic steel. The Fe(bal.)-10Cr-1Mo pre-alloyed powder and Y2O3 powder are mechanically alloyed for the different mechanical alloying duration (0 to 40 h) and then constantly fabricated using a uniaxial hot pressing process. Upon increasing the mechanical alloying time, the average powder diameter and crystallite size increased dramatically. In the initial stages within 5 h of mechanical alloying, inhomogeneous grain morphology is observed along with coarsened carbide and oxide distributions; thus, precipitate phases are temporarily observed between the two powders because of insufficient collision energy to get fragmented. After 40 h of the MA process, however, fine martensitic grains and uniformly distributed oxide particles are observed. This led to a favorable tensile strength and elongation at room temperature and 650℃.

  • In this work, the thermal, antibiotic properties and far-infrared emissivity of fluorinated illite embedded polypropylene non-woven fibers (f-illite/PP fibers) were investigated in the presence of 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 wt% illite powders. The thermal properties of f-illite/PP fibers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their antibiotic properties were examined by Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae test. Their far-infrared emissivity was also investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. From the experimental results, thermal, antibiotic properties and far-infrared emissivity of f-illite/PP fibers were improved by increasing fluorinated illite contents and the property values of 5 wt% f-illite/PP fibers were increased remarkably by about 10.3, 41.2 and 9.8% respectively in comparison with PP non-woven fibers having no fluorinated illite additive. This result was interpreted as the development of interfacial adhesion force between the polymer chains due to the fluorination of illite power.

  • The grouting method is used for reinforcing and waterproofing the soft ground, increasing the bearing capacity of structures damaged by lowering or subsidence due to rise and vibration, and for ordering. This study attempted to develop a blast furnace slag-based cementless grout material to increase the strength and hardening time of the grout material using reinforcing fibers. In this regard, in this study, it was used in combination with calcium hydroxide, which is an alkali stimulant of the three fine powders of blast furnace slag, and the content of calcium hydroxide was used by substituting 10, 20, and 30% of the fine powder of blast furnace slag. In addition, in order to compare the strength according to the presence or absence of reinforcing fibers, an experiment was performed by adding 0.5% of each fiber. As the content of carbon fibers and aramid fibers increased, the uniaxial compressive strength increased, and it was confirmed that the crosslinking action of the fibers in the grout material increased the uniaxial compressive strength. In addition, it was confirmed that the gel time sharply decreased as the content of the alkali stimulate increased.
