  • We study a conceptual numerical model on shock-vortex interaction setting an impulsive shock in a compressible vertex. Navier-Stokes equations are solved for the investigation of interactive structure and acoustic wave propagation. The rotationally symmetric vortex enforces two compression-expansion pairs resultantly forming a quadrupolar shape. These compressive and expansive waves cylindrically propagate to the far field and turn to acoustic waves. Using a fine uniform Cartesian grid system and a TVD-high resolution method, the flow data irl: precisely obtained to extend our interest to the sound source.

  • In this paper, we propose both Dense grid model and Anchor model to improve the recognition rate of dynamic objects. Two experiments are conducted to study the performance of two proposed CNNs models (Dense grid model and Anchor model), which are to detect dynamic objects. In the first experiment, YOLO-v2 network is adjusted, and then fine-tuned on KITTI datasets. The Dense grid model and Anchor model are then compared with YOLO-v2. Regarding to the evaluation, the two models outperform YOLO-v2 from 6.26% to 10.99% on car detection at different difficulty levels. In the second experiment, this paper conducted further training of the models on a new dataset. The two models outperform YOLO-v2 up to 22.40% on car detection at different difficulty levels.

  • This paper presents a novel Parameter-Independent Fictive-Axis (PIFA) approach for the Voltage-Oriented Control (VOC) algorithm used in grid-tied single-phase inverters. VOC is based on the transformation of the single-phase grid current into the synchronous reference frame. As a result, an orthogonal current signal is needed. Traditionally, this signal has been obtained from fixed time delays, digital filters or a Hilbert transformation. Nevertheless, these solutions present stability and transient drawbacks. Recently, the Fictive Axis Emulation (FAE) VOC has emerged as an alternative for the generation of the quadrature current signal. FAE requires detailed information of the grid current filter along with its transfer function for signal creation. When the transfer function is not accurate, the direct and quadrature current components present steady-state oscillations as the fictive two-phase system becomes unbalanced. Moreover, the digital implementation of the transfer function imposes an additional computing burden on the VOC. The PIFA VOC presented in this paper, takes advantage of the reference current to create the required orthogonal current, which effectively eliminates the need for the filter transfer function. Moreover, the fictive signal amplitude and phase do not change with a frequency drift, which results in an increased reliability. This yields a fast, linear and stable system that can be installed without fine tuning. To demonstrate the good performance of the PIFA VOC, simulation and experimental results are presented.

  • In this study, a three-dimensional least-square, level-set-based two-phase flow code was developed for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems using finite element discretization. The code was validated by solving some benchmark problems. The proposed method was found to provide improved results against other existing methods, by using a coarser mesh. The results of the numerical experiments conducted during the course of this study showed that the proposed method was both robust and accurate for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems. Using a substantially coarse grid, historical results of the dynamic pressure at a selected position corresponded with existing experimental data. The pressure history with a finer grid was similar to that of a coarse grid; however, a fine grid provided higher peak pressures. The present method could be extended to the analysis of a sloshing problem in a complex geometrical configuration using unstructured meshes owing to the features of FEM.

  • We demonstrate an S/S+band discretely tunable thulium doped fiber laser (TTDFL), anchored on a 50-㎓ ITU-T grid. Investigating the inversion analysis of the thulium doped fiber (TDF) in applying a dual wavelength (1.4 m and 1.5 m) pumping scheme, a laser whose tuning range covers most of the S/S+band has been obtained. Within the wide 3-㏈ bandwidth of 65.1 nm, the output power of the tunable laser exceeds 6.1 ㏈m with very flat spectral profile and the number of DWDM channels generated is as large as 178. If we increase the subsidiary pump power to 22 ㎽, the bandwidth is expanded up to 66.2 nm. By controlling the temperature of the fine grid filter, we have also shown that the frequency locking capability of the laser can be improved. The laser developed in this work is expected to be utilized as a practical optical source providing reference wavelengths in the S/S+band.

  • A multi-nesting grid storm surge model, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute-Storm surge model, was calibrated to simulate storm surges. To check the performance of this storm surge model, a series of numerical experiments were explored including tidal calibration, the influence of the open boundary condition, the grid resolutions, and typhoon paths on the surge heights using the typhoon Maemi, which caused a severe coastal disasters in Sep. 2003. In this study the meteorological input data such as atmospheric pressure and wind fields were calculated using CE wind model. Total 11 tidal gauge station records with 1-minute interval data were compared with the model results and the storm surge heights were successfully simulated. The numerical experiments emphasized the importance of meteorological input and fine-mesh grid systems on the precise storm surge prediction. This storm surge model could be used as an operational storm surge prediction system after more intensive verification.

  • An adaptive cut-cell grid based 2D inundation analysis model, K-Flood, is developed in this study. Cut cell grid method divides a grid into a flow area and a non-flow area depending the characteristics of the flows. With adaptive mesh refinement technique cut cell method can represent complex flow area using relatively small number of cells. In recent years, the urban inundation modeling using high resolution and fine quality data is increasing to achieve more accurate flood analysis or flood forecasting. K-Flood has potential to simulate such complex urban inundation using efficient grid generation technique. A finite volume numerical scheme of second order accuracy for space and time was applied. For verification of K-Flood, 1) shockwave reflex simulation by circular cylinder, 2) urban flood experiment simulation, 3) Malpasset dam collapse simulation are performed and the results are compared with observed data and previous simulation results.

  • The WAM wave model has been widely used for wave hindcasting in the ocean by many domestic and foreign researchers due to its relative simplicity and high accuracy. As this model was originally developed for the condition cf deepwater and comparatively coarse grid size covering wide area, it might produce in a fault result mused by the improper distribution of directional spreading. We extensively investigated involved problems based on WAM Cycle 4 model and suggested the improved WAM model so that it is applicable to both shallow water sea and fine mesh wave simulation. The modified WAM model is verified here by comparing the computed result with and the observed data at Ieodo Ocean Research Station for September of 2003.

  • The local cyclic strain distribution near the crack tip has been investigated by the fine Dot Grid Strain Measurement Method, which had been suggested strain measurement method to resolve experimental difficulties by authors. It has been found that the magnitude of the local cyclic strain distribution(.DELTA..epsilon.$_{eq}$ )near a crack tip has been varied by the applied cyclic load level and material, but the shape of the local cyclic strain distribution near the crack tip has been experimentally scrarcely altered : that is .DELTA..epsilon.$_{eq}$ = .DELTA.A.f(.theta.). $r^{-1}$ . Consequently, the local cyclic strain field near the crack tip could be favorably characterized by a single parameter fatigue strain intensity factor .DELTA.A. In addition, with the viewpoint that .DELTA.A depends on material and load level, .DELTA.A has been applied to evaluate the fatigue crack propagation rate and usefulness of the result has been considered. As a result, it has been ascertained that .DELTA.A has been a useful parameter to evaluate the fatigue crack propagation rate.
