  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of monomer and filler compositions on the rheological properties related to the handling characteristics of resin composites. Methods. Resin matrices that Bis-GMA as base monomer was blended with TEGDMA as diluent at various ratio were mixed with the Barium glass (0.7 um and 1.0 um), 0.04 um fumed silica and 0.5 um round silica. All used fillers were silane treated. In order to vary the viscosity of experimental composites, the type and content of incorporated fillers were changed, Using a rheometer, a steady shear test and a dynamic oscillatory shear test were used to evaluate the viscosity ($\eta$) of resin matrix, and the storage shear modulus (G'), the loss shear modulus (G"), the loss tangent ($tan{\delta}$) and the complex viscosity (${\eta}^*$) ofthe composites as a function of frequency ${\omega}{\;}={\;}0.1-100{\;}rad/s$. To investigate the effect of temperature on the viscosity of composites, a temperature sweep test was also undertaken. Results. Resin matrices were Newtonian fluid regardless of diluent concentration and all experimental composites exhibited pseudoplastic behavior with increasing shear rate. The viscosity of composites was exponentially increased with increasing filler volume%. In the same filler volume, the smaller the fillers were used, the higher the viscosities were. The effect of filler size on the viscosity was increased with increasing filler content. Increasing filler content reduced $tan{\delta}$ by increasing the G' further than the G". The viscosity of composites was decreased exponentially with increasing temperature.

A Study on Property Change with Mixing Ratio in NBR/PVC Composites

  • 10, 20, 30, and 40% of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were added to nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) to modify the latter. The NBR/PVC composites containing pure NBR were synthesized to investigate properties, such as crosslinking density, hardness, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, heat resistance, solvent resistance, and filler dispersion. The experimental result revealed a decrease in crosslinking density and heat resistance with increase in the PVC content. In contrast, addition of PVC to NBR resulted in enhancement of hardness, tensile strength, solvent resistance, and filler dispersion.

  • Concrete has been used for many years as a composite material that has excellent mechanical properties and durability for construction. However, concrete ia a poor electrical conductor, especially under dry conditions. Concrete that is excellent in both mechanical and electrical conductivity properties may have important applications in the electrical, electronic, military and construction industry (e.g for de-icing road from snow). The purpose of this investigation is to improve the electrical conductive of cement mortar preparared with graphite as filler. From the test result, as the ratio of graphite/cement increased, fluidity, fluidity and strength decreased but resistivity decreased. The resistivity of electrical conductive cement mortar is effect by water/cement ratio and water content of specimen. From this study, it is enough to assure the use of graphite as a conductive filler for electrical conducive cement mortar.

충전제 함량과 형태에 따른 PP복합체의 모듈러스 변화에 대한 실증적 연구 (Empirical Study for the Effects of Various Filler-Shapes on the Modulus of PP Composites)

  • 복합체의 기계적 물성 중에서 특히 충전제 형태와 함량에 따라 폴리프로필렌 복합체의 모듈러스 변화에 미치 는 영향에 관해 연구하였다. Eshelby의 중첩원리를 바탕으로 Lee와 Paul에 의해 제안된 두 개의 종횡비, ${\rho}_\alpha=a_1/a_3$${\rho}_\beta=a_1/a_2$를 가지고 분석한 3차원 타원체의 이론적 예측을 실험값과 비교 분석하였다. 충전제의 형태를 SEM을 이용해 관찰하였고, 종횡비는 통계적 방법으로 계산하였다. 구의 형태를 띠는 황산바륨의 횡단방향과 종단방향의 모 듈러스가 이론적 예측과 유사한 결과를 보였다. 유리섬유의 경우 충전제의 함량이 증가함에 따라 $x_1$방향의 모듈러스 가 증가하였지만, $x_3$ 방향의 증가는 상대적으로 작았다. 또한, 2개의 종횡비가 기계적 물성에 미치는 영향에 대해 운모를 가지고 연구하였다.

여러 종류의 에폭시/이종무기물 혼합 콤포지트의 전기적 교류 절연파괴 특성 (Electrical AC Insulation Breakdown Characteristics of Various Epoxy / Heterogeneous Inorganic Mixed Composite)

  • In this study, 20 types of samples were prepared by mixing different kinds of inorganic materials to develop insulation materials for epoxy - based GIS substation equipment used under high voltage environmentally friendly insulation gas. One of the electrical characteristics, AC insulation breakdown experiment was performed. As mixing ratio of mixed heterogeneous inorganic materials, the dielectric breakdown strength was increased with increasing filler ratio of micro silica, micro silica : micro Alumina, 1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3, 9:1, and decreased as the filling amount of micro alumina increased. The AC insulation breakdown characteristics were the best when the composition ratio was 9:1. The higher the content of silica, the better the interfacial properties, and the larger the alumina content ratio, the worse the interfacial properties.

아스팔트 콘크리트 채움재로 TDF Fly Ash 적용에 따른 아스팔트 혼합물 기초 물성 평가 (Fundamental Properties of Asphalt Concrete Mixture as Using TDF Fly Ash as Mineral Filler)

  • TDF (Tire derived fuel) Fly ash는 폐타이어를 발전소의 연료원으로써 사용하고 발생된 분말형태의 산업 부산물이다. TDF Fly ash는 현재까지 국내에서 사업장 폐기물로 분류되어 적절하게 활용되지 못하고 있다. 새로운 활용 방안 모색을 위해 TDF Fly ash를 아스팔트 혼합물용 채움재(Mineral filler)로써 적용하여 사용 가능성을 알아보는 아스팔트 혼합물 기초 물성 시험을 실시하였다. TDF Fly ash는 국내 KS F 3501의 아스팔트 혼합물 채움재 기준을 만족하였으며 마샬 배합설계를 진행하여 4.5%최적아스팔트함량을 결정하였다. 채움재 함량은 3%로 결정하였으며 채움재로써 석분을 사용하여 비교 분석 하였다. 아스팔트 혼합물 기초 물성 시험은 국토교통부에서 발간한 "아스팔트 혼합물 생산 및 시공지침"에서 제시된 규정으로 평가하였다. 시험은 마샬안정도 시험, 동적수침 시험, 인장강도비 시험, 휠 트랙킹 시험을 실시하였다. 실험결과, 마샬안정도와 동적안정도는 국토교통부에서 제시된 기준에 만족하여 안정성을 확인하였고 동적수침과 인장강도비 시험은 TDF Fly ash가 석분보다 박리저항성 및 수분저항성에 효과가 있음을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 TDF Fly ash의 다각적 활용이 예상 되며 긍정적인 효과를 기대할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Study on mechanical properties of phosphate tailings modified clay as subgrade filler

  • To improve the utilization rate of phosphate tailings (PTs) and widen the sources of subgrade filler, the PTs is employed to modify clay, forming a PTs modified clay, applied in the subgrade. Accordingly, the environmental friendliness of PTs was investigated. Subsequently, an optimal proportion was determined through compaction and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) experiments. Afterward, the stability of mixture with the optimal proportion was further evaluated through the water stability and dry-wet stability experiments. Finally, via the gradation and microstructure experiments, the strength mechanism of PTs modified clay was analyzed. The results show that the PTs were classified in the non-hazardous solid wastes, belonging to Class A building materials. With the increase of PTs content and the decrease of clay content, the optimum water content and the swelling degree gradually decrease, while the maximum dry density and CBR first increase and then decrease, reaching their peak value at 50% PTs content, which is the optimal proportion. The resilient modulus of PTs modified clay at the optimal proportion reaches 110.2 MPa. The water stability coefficient becomes stable after soaking for 4 days, while the dry-wet stability coefficient decreases with the increase of cycles and tends to be stable after 8 cycles. Under the long-term action, the dry-wet change has a greater adverse impact than continuous soaking. The analysis demonstrates that the better strength mainly comes from the skeleton role of PTs and the cementation of clay. The systematic laboratory test results and economic analysis collectively provide data evidence for the advantages of PTs modified clay as a subgrade filler.

TDF ash를 채움재로 사용한 아스팔트 콘크리트 물성 평가 (Evaluation of TDF ash as a Mineral Filler in Asphalt Concrete)

  • PURPOSES : The new waste management policy of South Korea encourages the recycling of waste materials. One material being recycled currently is tire-derived fuel (TDF) ash. TDF is composed of shredded scrap tires and is used as fuel in power plants and industrials plants, resulting in TDF ash, which has a chemical composition similar to that of the fly ash produced from coal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of an asphalt concrete mix that used TDF ash as the mineral filler. METHODS : The properties of the asphalt concrete were evaluated for different mineral filler types and contents using various measurement techniques. The fundamental physical properties of the asphalt concrete specimens such as their gradation and antistripping characteristics were measured in accordance with the KS F 3501 standard. The Marshall stability test was performed to measure the maximum load that could be supported by the specimens. The wheel tracking test was used to evaluate the rutting resistance. To investigate the moisture susceptibility of the specimens, dynamic immersion and tensile strength ratio (TSR) measurements were performed. RESULTS : The test results showed that the asphalt concrete containing TDF ash satisfied all the criteria listed in the Guide for Production and Construction of Asphalt Mixtures (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, South Korea). In addition, TDF ash exhibited better performance than that of portland cement. The Marshall stability of the asphalt concrete with TDF ash was higher than 7500 N. Further, its dynamic stability was also higher than that listed in the guide. The results of the dynamic water immersion and the TSR showed that TDF ash shows better moisture resistance than does portland cement. CONCLUSIONS : TDF ash can be effectively recycled by being used as a mineral filler in asphalt, as it exhibits desirable physical properties. The optimal TDF ash content in asphalt concrete based on this study was determined to be 5%. In future works, the research team will compare the characteristics of asphalt concrete as function of the mineral filler types.

강화섬유와 세라믹이 충진된 NBR 고무 복합체의 기계적 물성 특성 (Mechanical Properties of NBR Rubber Composites Filled with Reinforced Fiber and Ceramics)

  • 본 연구에서는 NBR 고무의 물성을 향상시키기 위해서 충진재의 함량 조절 및 복합화를 통한 가황고무의 기계적 특성에 대해 실험하였다. 충진재는 내열성이 우수하다고 알려진 아라미드 섬유와 유리 섬유를 사용하였고, 상호보완 효과를 기대하여 세라믹을 적용하였으며, 적용된 세라믹 재료는 형상에 따라 침상구조의 세라믹과 판상구조의 세라믹을 적용하였다. 각 충진재의 기초 물성 조사를 위해 각 충진재는 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0 phr의 양으로 사용되었으며, 증량에 따른 물리적 특성을 비교 및 분석하였다. 세라믹 적용을 통한 상호 보완 효과를 확인하기 위해 각 10.0 phr 섬유와 세라믹을 1 : 1 복합 충진하여 기계적 물성 특성에 관한 평가를 하였다. 그 결과, 충진재 단독적용의 경우 아라미드 섬유, 침상 세라믹, 유리 섬유, 판상 세라믹 순으로 열 노화 후 인장강도 감소율이 작은 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 섬유와 세라믹 기반의 복합 충진재가 적용된 가황고무의 기계적 특성을 평가하였으며, 복합 충진재가 열 노화에 대한 상호보완 효과를 가지는 것을 확인하였다.

Effect of Interphase Modulus and Nanofiller Agglomeration on the Tensile Modulus of Graphite Nanoplatelets and Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polypropylene Nanocomposites

  • This study investigates the effect of filler content (wt%), presence of interphase and agglomerates on the effective Young's modulus of polypropylene (PP) based nanocomposites reinforced with exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets ($xGnP^{TM}$) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The Young's modulus of the composites is determined using tensile testing based on ASTM D638. The reinforcement/polymer interphase is characterized in terms of width and mechanical properties using atomic force microscopy which is also used to investigate the presence and size of agglomerates. It is found that the interphase has an average width of ~30 nm and modulus in the range of 5 to 12 GPa. The Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model is modified to account for the effect of interphase and filler agglomerates and the model predictions for the effective modulus of the composites are compared to the experimental data. The presented results highlight the need of considering various experimentally observed filler characteristics such as agglomerate size and aspect ratio and presence and properties of interphase in the micromechanical models in order to develop better design tools to fabricate multifunctional polymer nanocomposites with engineered properties.
