More strict construction control of railway roadbeds is demanded in high speed railway system because of heavier repeated dynamic loading than conventional railways. The aim of this study is to propose a compaction control methodology of crushed-rock-soil-fills including as large particles as $200\sim300mm$ in diameter, which are easily encountered in high speed railway roadbed. Field tensity evaluation and in turn compaction control of such crushed-rock-soil-fills are almost impossible by conventional methods such as in-situ density measurements or plate loading tests. The proposed method consists of shear wave measurements of compaction specimens in laboratory and in-situ measurements of fills. In other words, compaction control can be carried out by comparing laboratory and field shear wave velocities using as a compaction control parameter. The proposed method was implemented at a soil site in the beginning and will be expanded to crushed-rock-soil-fills in future. One interesting result is that similar relationship of shear wave velocity and water content was obtained as that of density and water content with the maximum value at the optimum moisture content.

Proctor test A or D method of compaction is the most common laboratory test for investigation of subgrade soil characteristics, however, compression type using roller is used in the field. The differences between laboratory and field compaction have considerable error as application to subgrade soil properties of laboratory test. The investigation of compacted soil is carried into effect to solve the problem. The gyratory compactor which is made to reproduce the field density of asphalt mixture, coming from traffic loads, has an advance to compact it similar to arrangement of field aggregate particles. This gyratory compactor has several problems of investigation of compacted soil, because it has designed to make initial asphalt specimens. The main objectives of this research are grasping problems when compacted soil test using the gyratory compactor and showing solutions. It has made a comparative study of difference of the percentage of water content and weight, which are before and after compaction, about the pressure of compaction, frequency of compaction and speed of compaction. And it also has investigated finding maximum percentage of water content which not occur change of percentage of water content after compaction and searching how has an effect on drawing compaction curve.
This study has been conducted to improve the conventional compaction management method by measuring the water content and dry unit weight of soil using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) method. In order to verify the measured value of the developed flat TDR system, laboratory tests were conducted on six soils. Also, based on laboratory experiments, field tests were conducted to evaluate the applicability of the developed flat TDR system. Also, a comparison experiment was conducted with the Purdue TDR system. In addition, FE analysis was done to confirm the influence range of the Flat probe. As a result, it was confirmed that the influence range was about 10 cm. As a result of laboratory experiment, the water content ratio showed an error of about 0.4% on the average, and in the case of dry unit weight, it showed an error of about 1.6%. For the field test, the water content ratio and unit weight showed an error of 0.8% and 2.5%, respectively. Through the experimental results, it was confirmed that the measured value of the Flat TDR system is more accurate than that of the conventional TDR system.

In this study, it was selected that in order to make an investigation into the status of the unit water content control of the ready-mixed concrete plants in the country, Capacitance Measurement Method out of various methods which are able to gauge the amount of unit water content in fresh concrete. Then, it were estimated that the quantity of unit water in fresh concrete and the technical standard of every mixture design of the six ready-mixed concrete plants chosen at random in the country. Finally, based on this study, it was proposed as fundamental data to utilize measurement techniques of the quantity of unit water for the quality control of the ready-mixed concrete in construction field.
Effects of soil moisture on growth of Panax ginseng, of various factors on soil moisture, and of moisture on nutrition, quality, physiological disorder, diseases and insect damage were reviewed. Optimum soil moisture was 32% of field capacity with sand during seed dehiscence, and 55-65% for plant growth in the fields. Optimum soil moisture content for growth was higher for aerial part than for root and higher for width than for length. Soil factors for high yield in ginseng fields appeared to be organic matter, silt, clay, agreggation, and porosity that contributed more to water holding capacity than rain fall did, and to drainage. Most practices for field preparation aimed to control soil moisture rather than nutrients and pathogens. Light intensity was a primary factor affecting soil moisture content through evaporation. Straw mulching was best for the increase of soil moisture especially in rear side of bed. Translocation to aerial part was inhibited by water stress in order of Mg, p, Ca, N an Mn while accelerated in order of Fe, Zn and K. Most physiological disorders(leaf yellowing, early leaf fall, papery leaf spot, root reddening, root scab, root cracking, root dormancy) and quality factors were mainly related to water stress. Most critical diseases were due to stress, excess and variation of soil water, and heavy rain fall. The role of water should be studied in multidiciplinary, especially in physiology and pathology.

This paper deals with the characteristics of soil ionization affecting the dynamic performance of grounding systems under lightning impulse voltage. A concentric hemispherical electrode system was employed in order to facilitate the field calculation and analysis of the experimental results. The parameters such as the ionization threshold and breakdown field intensity, the pre-ionization and the post ionization resistances, the time-lag to ionization, the transient impedance, the equivalent ionized radius for various soil media were measured and analyzed. The dynamic characteristics of ionization processes under lightning impulse voltage are strongly dependent on the types of soil and water content. As a result, a soil ionization reduces the ground resistance and there is a little effect of applied impulse polarity on the soil ionization threshold field intensity. Although the ionization threshold field intensity of wet clay with 30% water content is the highest, its ionized zone was found to be the smallest amongst the test samples.

In this paper, the sensitivity of the leachate level is analyzed using the program HELP to reduce the high leachate level on the landfill. Hydraulic parameters analyzed were porosity, field capacity, wilting point and initial water content of cover soil and waste. Also, the influence of the difference between the initial water content and the field capacity on the leachate level in the landfill was analyzed. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the increase of the porosity and the wilting point decreases the leachate level, while the increase of the field capacity and the hydraulic conductivity increases the leachate level. Major parameters to the change of the leachate level were the hydraulic conductivity in the case of cover soil and the porosity, the field capacity and the initial water content in the case of waste.
During a construction of embankment, sub base, or retaining wall backfill, the speedy measurement of water content is necessary. In this study, a test method for field determination of water content of soil by the calcium carbide gas pressure (speedy water content measurement method) was evaluated for its reliability and accuracy. Dry oven and microwave oven methods were also used for water content measurement. In the test, weathered granite and Nakdong River sand in the site and kaolinite were used for water content measurement. The mass of 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30 g of soil was respectively tested for 1, 3, and 5 min. The effect of each sample on water content was compared one another and analyzed. As the mass and testing time increased, the water content increased. The amount of soil was more important factor than testing time for the speedy water content measurement. In order to obtain similar result to that of dry oven method, 3 min of testing time with 24 g of soil was necessary for weathered granite classified as SM and 3 min with 30 g for Nakdong River sand classified as SP. For Nakdong River sand with 20-50% of kaolinite, the water content by speedy measurement increased as the clay content increased.

The objectives of this field experiment was to determine and recommend the water requirement for harrow considering the factors of soil class and soil moisture status. Experiment was conducted at the -paddy field of the Office of Rural Development in Chungnam Province. The results of experiment were summarized as follows: 1. Continuous drought day of 10-yr return period in transplanting season was about 25 days and the water content ratios at that point were approximately 20% in clayey-loam soil and 12% in sandy-loam soil irrelevantly to the soil-depth. 2. It was recommended that harrow-water requirement for standard design were approximately 9Omm in clayey-loam soil, 110mm in loamy soil and l3Omm in sandy-loam soil.

Polyimide is widely used as a high-temperature insulating material. Space charge distributions in polyimide (PI) films strongly depend upon electric field, temperature, water content and so on. We observed space charge distributions in PI films with various water contents. When a dc field was applied to as-received PI films or water-treated PI films, positive and negative homo space charges were observed near the respective electrodes at 333 K. In dried PI films, the homo space charges were much reduced, and positive and negative hetero space charges in the bulk were clearly observed. The space charge amounts in water-treated PI films were smaller than in as-received ones, while the current density in water-treated PI film was larger than that in as-received one by two or more orders of magnitude. These suggest not only that the charge injection from the electrode is enhanced by absorbed water but also that absorbed water makes carriers mobile. The decay of space charge was also faster in water-treated PI than in as-received or dried one. This also supports the enhancement of apparent mobilities of carriers in PI by absorbed water.
