Potential of regression models in projecting sea level variability due to climate change at Haldia Port, India

  • Higher prediction efficacy is a very challenging task in any field of engineering. Due to global warming, there is a considerable increase in the global sea level. Through this work, an attempt has been made to find the sea level variability due to climate change impact at Haldia Port, India. Different statistical downscaling techniques are available and through this paper authors are intending to compare and illustrate the performances of three regression models. The models: Wavelet Neural Network (WNN), Minimax Probability Machine Regression (MPMR), Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN) are used for projecting the sea level variability due to climate change at Haldia Port, India. Model performance indices like PI, RMSE, NSE, MAPE, RSR etc were evaluated to get a clear picture on the model accuracy. All the indices are pointing towards the outperformance of WNN in projecting the sea level variability. The findings suggest a strong recommendation for ensembled models especially wavelet decomposed neural network to improve projecting efficiency in any time series modeling.

  • It is an interesting area in the field of artificial intelligence to and an analytic model of cooperative structure for multi-agent system accomplishing a given task. Usually it is difficult to design controllers for multi-agent systems without a comprehensive knowledge about the system. One of the way to overcome this limitation is to implement an evolutionary approach to design the controllers. This paper introduces the use of a genetic algorithm to discover a fuzzy logic controller with rules that govern emergent co-operative behavior: A modified genetic algorithm was applied to automating the discovery of a fuzzy logic controller jot multi-agents playing a pursuit game. Simulation results indicate that, given the complexity of the problem, an evolutionary approach to and the fuzzy logic controller seems to be promising.

  • Modeling is essential to simulate the operation of integrated circuit (IC) before its fabrication. Seeing a large number of Metal-Oxide-Silicon Field-Effect-Transistor (MOSFET) models available, it has become important to understand them and compare them for their pros and cons. The task becomes equally difficult when the complexity of these models becomes very high. The paper reviews the mainstream models with their physical relevance and their comparisons. Major short-channel and quantum effects in the models are outlined. Emphasis is set upon the latest compact models like BSIM, MOS Models 9/11, EKV, SP etc.

  • Environmental noise raises serious problems in our ciries. Noise reduces the preformance task, and occasionially causes the physiological problems such as nervous strain, headache etc. This study is to investigate the environmental noise of elementary school classrooms in attempt to probide the basis of appropriate sound performance standards. Field interview survey with a total of 369 subjects in 3 elementary schools and simultaneously measurements of noise level have been made. The results of study show that the A-weighted noise level is in excess of the criteria recommended by I.S.O. and 69% of the subjects are annoyed by the environmental noises : in particular traffic ; and market noises.

Tiny Magnetic Robot Mechanism and Manipulation for Stent Transportation and Installation

  • Magnetic spiral-type microrobots, which are driven by a rotating magnetic field, have excellent locomotive abilities, whereas their medical applications are limited in the terms of function, such as the ability to drill in blood vessels. In this study, we propose a new robot with superior applications using a magnetic spiral-type machine. The proposed robot can be applied to stent transportation and installation without a catheter. In particular, the robot can be applied to the cardiovascular system, cerebrovascular disease, and nonvascular stent applications depending on the robot size. The robot consists of two independent spiral-type machines and four magnets in total. We controlled directions of thrust force of the two machines, respectively, for active locomotion with a task. We conducted a preliminary validation of the proposed robot for stent transportation and installation through experimental analyses.

Study on Levee Visual Inspection Information System Building Using Mobile Technology

  • In this paper, we propose the mobile visual inspection information system using DGPS and portable range finder for levee safety inspection. Instead of existing visual inspection management method that is stored hand-written data, this system is designed to manage directly the visual inspection information using mobile devices in the field of levee. And through extracting accurate DGPS coordinates information about damage location of levee, this system is developed to ensure efficiency for the main task arising from the levee site such as inspection, maintenance and reinforcement. Furthermore, when damage has occurred at the point that inspector is not able to approach, this system can record the damage site data correctly, by converting data such as position, orientation and height of the damage point into the World Geodetic System coordinates. The position, orientation and height data was extracted automatically through the DGPS and portable range finder. And by applying the augmented reality method, this system was implemented for inspector to revisit the point of damage easily in order to perform the management, maintenance and reinforcement of the levee later.

Design of an FPGA Based Controller for Delta Modulated Single-Phase Matrix Converters

  • A FPGA based delta modulated single phase matrix converter has been developed that may be used in both cyclo-converters and cyclo-inverters. This converter is ideal for variable speed electrical drives, induction heating, fluorescent lighting, ballasts and high frequency power supplies. The peripheral input-output and FPGA interfacing have been developed through Xilinx 9.2i, to generate delta modulated trigger pulses for the converter. The controller has been relieved of the time consuming computational task of PWM signal generation by implementing the method of trigger pulse generation in a FPGA by using Hardware Description Language VHDL in Xilinx. The trigger circuit has been tested qualitatively by observing various waveforms on an oscilloscope. The operation of the proposed system has been found to be satisfactory.

  • An attempt of using SOCMAC neural network for the prediction of a nonlinear sequence, which is generated by Mackey-Glass equation, is reported. The ,report shows the SOCMAC can handle a system with multi-dimensional continuous inputs, which has been considered very difficult, if not impossible, task to be implemented by a CMAC neural network because of a huge amount of memory required. Also, an improved training method based on the variable receptive fields is proposed. The Performance ranged somewhere around those of TDNN and BP neural networks.

  • Today, most weapon systems operate as component systems of SoS(System of Systems) and they produce synergy effects in the battle field by interoperating. In addition, the acquisition issues on weapon systems have expanded into SoS context including sustainment analysis. Availability is the sustainment KPP(Key Performance Parameter) of weapon systems. In this paper, a simulation model is proposed to analyze the availability of SoS. The simulation model consists of 5 modules: Mission and Task, System, System RBD, Maintenance system and a simulation engine. Then it was implemented and applied to a SoS. As a result of the application, the simulation model could be applied for analyzing the availability of the SoS and provided information about critical tasks and risky component systems to complete the given mission of the SoS.

  • Analyzing test data of a vehicle for evaluating its emission performance is an essential process in automotive development field, yet it is intricate and tedious task. In addition, clear understanding and care are required when the analysis process is carried out. Computer software solutions significantly reduce the time and the effort for such analysis. Developing a computer routine to analyze the emission data in a vehicle test demands a complete understanding of the emissions analysis and its related details. In this paper, the principals to develop a LabVIEW analysis routine (VI) are introduced helping automotive engineers comprehend the emission analysis process of a vehicle test data and instruct them to develop similar routines for such analysis.
