The rapid increase in cases of insect resistance to insecticides indicates that the contribution of present chemical control practices inevitably leads to exhaustion of available insecticide resources against key insect species. Now the problem of insecticide resistance exists worldwide among insects and mites affecting field crops and animals including human beings, ranging from minimal or absent in some developing countries, where use of insecticides has been low, to extremely severe in many developed countries. Since the occurrence of insect resistance to insecticides was firstly recognized in 1908, the increase in recent decades has been almost linear and now the number of species of insects and acarines in which resistant strains have evolved have been increased to a total of 432. Of these, $261(60\%)$ are agricultural importance and $171(40\%)$ of medical/veterinary importance. The phenomenon of insecticide resistance is asserting itself as the greatest challenge to effective chemical control of many important insect pests. Resistance of insects to insecticides has a history of nearly 80 years, but its greatest increase and its strongest impact have occurred during the last 40 years following the discovery and extensive use of synthetic organic insecticides and acaricides. The impact of resistance should be considered not only in terms of greater cost of pest control due to increased dosages and number of applications but also in terms of the ecological disruption of pest-beneficial species density relationships, the loss of investment in the development of the insecticides concerned, and socio-economic disruption in agricultural communities. Despite its grave economic consequences, the phenomenon of insecticide resistance has received surprisingly little attention in Korea. Since the study of insecticides started firstly in 1963, many entomologists have been concerned with this study. According to their results, some of the rice pests and some of the mites on orchard trees, for example, have developed worrisome level of resistance in several areas of this peninsula. With many arthropods, considerable advances in the developed countries have been made in the study of the biochemical and physiological mechanisms of resistance. Progress involves the biochemical characteristics of specific defense mechanisms, their genetics, interactions, and their quantitative and qualitative contribution to resistance. But their studies arc still inadequately known and relatively little have been contributed in terms of unique schemes of population management in achieving satisfactory pest control. It is apparent that there is no easy solution to resistance as a general phenomenon. For future challenging to effective control of insect pests which are resistant to the insecticides concerned, new insecticide groups with distinctly novel mode of action are urgently needed. It is clear, however, that a great understanding of the factors which govern the intensity of selection of field population for resistance could lead to far more permanently successive use of chemicals within the framework of integrated pest management than heretofore practiced.

Power semiconductor devices required the low on-resistance and high breakdown voltage. Wide band-gap materials opened a new technology of the power devices which promised a thin drift layer at an identical breakdown voltage. The diamond had the wide band-gap of 5.5 eV which induced the low power loss, high breakdown capability, low intrinsic carrier generation, and high operation temperature. We investigated the p-type pseudo-vertical diamond Schottky barrier diodes using a numerical simulation. The impact ionization rate was material to calculating the breakdown voltage. We revised the impact ionization rate of the diamond for adjusting the parallel-plane breakdown field at 10 MV/cm. Effects of the field plate on the breakdown voltage was also analyzed. A conventional diamond Schottky barrier diode without field plate exhibited the high forward current of 0.52 A/mm and low on-resistance of $1.71{\Omega}-mm$ at the forward voltage of 2 V. The simulated breakdown field of the conventional device was 13.3 MV/cm. The breakdown voltage of the conventional device and proposed devices with the $SiO_2$ passivation layer, anode field plate (AFP), and cathode field plate (CFP) was 680, 810, 810, and 1020 V, respectively. The AFP cannot alleviate the concentration of the electric field at the cathode edge. The CFP increased the breakdown voltage with evidences of the electric field and potential. However, we should consider the dielectric breakdown because the ideal breakdown field of the diamond is higher than that of the $SiO_2$, which is widely used as the passivation layer. The real breakdown voltage of the device with CFP decreased from 1020 to 565 V due to the dielectric breakdown.
Insect pests can be controlled through direct application of insecticides. Insect control by residual protectants is relatively inexpensive and has an advantage of destroying all stages of infestations. The efficacy of control is largely determined by the concentration of insecticides to which the pest species is exposed. A reduction in the period of control in the field afforded by a specific level of a protectant indicates that resistance has developed. An increase in the level of protectant is required to maintain control, and the efficacy of currently used insecticides has been severely reduced by insecticide resistance in pest species. Development of resistance to particular insecticide varies with species because insecticide resistance is often correlated with increased levels of certain enzymes, which are cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases, glutathione S-transferases and esterases. Some sections of insecticide molecules can be modified by one or more of these primary enzymes. A reduction in the sensitivity of the action site of a xenobiotic also constitutes a mechanism of resistance. Acetylcholinesterase is a major target site for insecticide action, as are axonal sodium ion channels and ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid receptors. Development of reduced sensitivity of these target sites to insecticides usually occurs. This review not only may contribute to a better understanding of insecticide resistance, but also illustrates the gaps still present for a full biochemical understanding of the resistance.

The present study aims to review the wave pattern resistance analysis method suggested by the International Towing Tank Conference. From the experimental database of a container carrier ship model, the wave pattern measurement and resistance test results are utilized. The wave pattern resistance at the design Froude number is obtained to be compared with the wave making resistance of experiments. Wave pattern resistance is lower than wave making resistance by 1978 ITTC and uniform regardless of transverse location of wave cut. The method is also applied to the wave height field by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses with Froude number variation. Although numerical damping suppressed waves in downstream, waves around the hull and wave pattern resistance are properly predicted.

Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRSR) and wildfire disease (WFD) of soybean are frequently observed in the field of South Korea. The most environmentally friendly way to control PRSR and WFD is to use soybean varieties with resistance to Phytophthora sojae (P. sojae) and Pseudomonas amygdali pv. tabaci. Plant germplasm is an important gene pool for soybean breeding and improvement. In this study, hundreds of soybean accessions were evaluated for the two pathogens, and genome-wide association analyses were conducted using 104,955 SNPs to identify resistance loci for the two pathogens. Of 193 accessions, 46 genotypes showed resistance reaction, while 143 did susceptibility for PRSP. Twenty SNPs were significantly associated with resistance to P. sojae on chromosomes (Chr.) 3 and 4. Significant SNPs on Chr.3 were located within the known Rps gene region. A region on Chr. 4 is considered as a new candidate resistance loci. For evalation of resistance to WFD, 18, 31,74,36 and 34 genotypes were counted by a scale of 1-5, respectively. Five SNP markers on Chrs 9,11,12,17 and 18 were significantly associated with resistance to P. amygdali pv. tabaci. The identified SNPs and genomic regions will provide a useful information for further researches and breeding for resistance to P. sojae and P. amygdali pv. tabaci.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance properties of chip seals and fog seals with polymer-modified emulsions. METHODS : The performance of chip seals and fog seals was evaluated on the basis of common issues in surface treatments. Granite aggregate and four types of asphalt emulsions (one of the unmodified and three of the modified emulsions) were used considering the usage in field. A Vialit test was performed to determine the aggregate retention, and the MMLS3 (Third Scale Model Mobile Load Simulator) test was conducted to determine the aggregate retention, bleeding, and rutting. In addition, the fog seal specimens were tested by the BPT (British Pendulum Test) to evaluate skid resistance. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Overall, the polymer-modified emulsions (PMEs) showed better aggregate retention and bleeding resistance for both chip seals and fog seals. When comparing the performance of the PMEs, the difference was not considerable. In addition, PMEs present significantly better rutting resistance than unmodified emulsions. For skid resistance, if the recommended mix design is applied, the specimens do not cause issues with skid resistance. Although all of the fog seal specimens were over the criteria for skid resistance, the specimen fabricated by the high emulsion application rate (EAR) of the unmodified emulsion was nearly equivalent to the skid value criteria. Therefore, the use of an unmodified emulsion with a high EAR should be carefully applied in the field.

We investigated the effect of capacitively coupled Ar plasma treatment on contact resistance ($R_c$) and channel sheet resistance ($R_{sh}$) of graphene field effect transistors (FETs), by varying their channel length in the wide range from 200 nm to $50{\mu}m$ which formed the transfer length method (TLM) patterns. When the Ar plasma treatment was performed on the long channel ($10{\sim}50{\mu}m$) graphene FETs for 20 s, $R_c$ decreased from 2.4 to $1.15k{\Omega}{\cdot}{\mu}m$. It is understood that this improvement in $R_c$ is attributed to the formation of $sp^3$ bonds and dangling bonds by the plasma. However, when the channel length of the FETs decreased down to 200 nm, the drain current ($I_d$) decreased upon the plasma treatment because of the significant increase of channel $R_{sh}$ which was attributed to the atomic structural disorder induced by the plasma across the transfer length at the edge of the channel region. This study suggests a practical guideline to reduce $R_c$ using various plasma treatments for the $R_c$ sensitive graphene and other 2D material devices, where $R_c$ is traded off with $R_{sh}$.

A plant growth promoting rhizobacterium, Bacillus vallismortis BS07M, was formulated as a clay pellet (CP) to evaluate its pepper growth promotion and induced resistance against various diseases under field and storage conditions. Peppers were grown in 50-hole tray containing potting mixture with CP in seedling raising stage, and then it was transplanted into a field. After transplanting, pepper plants treated with CP in seedling raising stage increased shoot growth and reduced disease severity caused by Phytophthora capsici in detached pepper leaves compared to untreated control. Moreover, treatment with CP in seedling raising stage increased fruit weight per plant; after harvesting, pepper fruits shown reduced diameter of lesions by Colletotrichum acutatum, and occurrance of soft rot in storage condition. These results indicated that CP could affect plant growth and induced resistance in pepper plants under field condition, and maintenance of fruit during storage.

This paper consists of the speed sensorless vector control of induction motors with the estimation of rotor resistance. In the application of variable-speed induction motor drives, if an inaccurate rotor resistance is used because the rotor resistance can change due to skin effects and temperature variables, it is difficult to achieve a collect field orientation. In this paper, to overcome these difficulties adaptive algorithm is designed for rotor resistance identification. The proposed adaptive algorithm for rotor resistance estimation in the synchronous reference frame is applied by sliding mode current controller satisfing persistent excitation(PE) condition. Adaptive flux observer is here used for the purpose of estimating rotor flux and speed in the speed sensorless scheme. Computer simulations are carried out to verify the validity of the proposed algorithm.
