  • N-value by the SPT is one of the key parameter for settlement evaluation. However, if the ground is firm, the usual N-value is not blow count of 30cm depth penetration. In such case, if N-value is more than 50 with 30cm penetration, the N-value 50 is applied for settlement analysis. Therefore, in this study, the modified method of N-value estimation is suggested and compared the settlement by Elastic Theory, and the measured field data by Plate Load Test. As the result of this study, it is shown that the settlement by Elastic Theory with the modified N-value is more accurate than settlement by usual N-value. The application of Elastic Theory for pure sand is also evaluated in this paper.

  • In this research, the plate load tests on sand which is reinforced by Tirecell mat were simulated by finite element method (FEM). Tirecell mat made by waste tires has the same function and similar shape to Geocell for soil reinforcement and it can also be used for civil engineering structure. The results were compared with those of field plate load tests for evaluation of suitability of modeling method. From the comparison of both results, it can be seen that the settlements by FEM were very similar to test results with small margin under the ultimate bearing capacity. For the ultimate bearing capacities of two results, difference was very small. After the confirmation of the modelling, reinforcing effects with variation of cover depth and number of reinforcement layers by Tirecell were analyzed additionally. Reinforcing effect decreases with increasing soil cover depth, and this is similar to previous test results by soil cover depth. As the number of reinforcing layers increased, reinforcing effect increased. However at more than 2 reinforcing layers, reinforcing effect was negligible. In conclusion, the modeling method in this research might be used for analysis of reinforced structures using Tirecell mat.

  • This study was carried out as a part of the research on the development of a maskless and electroless process for fabricating metal micro/nanostructures by using a nanoindenter and an electroless deposition technique. $2-\mu{m}-deep$ indentation tests on Ni and Cu samples were performed. The elastic recovery of the Ni and Cu was 9.30% and 9.53% of the maximum penetration depth, respectively. The hardness and the elastic modulus were 1.56 GPa and 120 GPa for Ni and 1.49 GPa and 100 GPa for Cu. The effect of single-point diamond machining conditions such as the Berkovich tip orientation (0, 45, and $90^{\circ}$) and the normal load (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 mN), on both the deformation behavior and the morphology of cutting traces (such as width and depth) was investigated by constant-load scratch tests. The tip orientation had a significant influence on the coefficient of friction, which varied from 0.52-0.66 for Ni and from 0.46-0.61 for Cu. The crisscross-pattern sample showed that the tip orientation strongly affects the surface quality of the machined area during scratching. A selective deposition of Cu at the pit-like defect on a p-type Si(111) surface was also investigated. Preferential deposition of the Cu occurred at the surface defect sites of silicon wafers, indicating that those defect sites act as active sites for the deposition reaction. The shape of the Cu-deposited area was almost the same as that of the residual stress field.

  • Longitudinal cracks have occurred on the crest of dams soon after their construction of two earth-rocfill dams located in Samlangjin. They are a pair of pumped storage dams constructed for generation of electrical power. The upper dam and lower dam are subjected to the variation of water level more than 10m once in a day alteratively. This paper deals with the finding of possible causes for longitudinal cracks about upper dam. The dominant cause was considered to be due to fluctuation of water load, for which numerical analysis was carried out using the hyperbolic model. In order to obtain parameters necessary to the analysis, a series of triaxial tests was performed for both core and rock material. Also dynamic triaxial test was performed to obtain dynamic properties of soils, which could be used as input data to simulate frequent variation of stress change due to the water fluctuation. It was known from the numerical analysis that the confining pressure of upper 4m from the top of the crest become negative after repeating of water load, meaning that tension cracks occurred in the top portion of the crest. The depth of longitudinal cracks has been investigated by digging test pit on the crest. This results agree with the field observation.

  • In this study, wedge splitting tests were performed to evaluate fracture behavior of particle reinforced composite materials. Crack resistance was evaluated by using CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) and crack tip opening angle (CTOA). The particle reinforced composites were tested under various temperature ($-60^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$) and load speed (5~500mm/min). Also, digital image correlation method (DIC) was used to analyze the strain field at crack tip. Test results showed that the fracture energy increased with decreasing temperature and crack resistance increased with increasing load velocity.

  • The final purpose of driveability analysis is to confirm whether a selected hammer drives a pile to a desired penetration depth and/or capacity without damage. The capacities from static analysis methods are meaningless if the pile cannot be driven to the required design depth and the ultimate capacity without damage. It often occurs that there are big differences between the capacities from measurements and calculations. It may be because the driveability is not evaluated due to the lack of engineers' understanding of the driveability of pile driving. The engineers in the field sometimes assume simply the penetration depth with standard penetration value only. In this study some test pilings with dynamic pile loading tests were performed to give an understanding about the driveability. The influence factors(driving resistance, impedance, material strength, hammer) on the driveability of steel piles were analysed with the monitoring data obtained from the dynamic load tests. It was shown that more cost-effective design can be made in case the driveability analysis and high strength steel pile are appropriately adopted in the design.

  • In this study, Anchor Pile Precast Retaining Wall (APC) with screw shape flange was investigated and the results were arranged for designing APC specifications. Since precast materials require special care when they are manufactured, carried or treated, more accurate design and analysis of optimized dimension are needed : thus moment distribution of front foot was checked. Through full-scale field test, form and optimal stiffening shape were obtained and through fracture test with real load, applicable load was reasonably calculated. Research result in this thesis could be used as guideline or standard of designing and constructing Anchor Pile Precast Retaining Wall with screw shape flange.

  • To identify the reclamation history formed by top dredged soil reclamation layer over the original ground, various field tests and laboratory tests were conducted. Especially when the original ground was not completely consolidated, CPTu test was carried out to calculate rational settlement due to the banking load. CPTu test results showed that the degree of consolidation of weak clay ground by dredged reclamation was on average 80%. As the research area was not completely consolidated by dredged reclamation in the past, the consolidation settlement should account for the residual settlement (20%) in the case of additional banking load. When the degree of consolidation of the original ground was not taken into account, the residual consolidation was expected in excessive settlement (up to 20%) and in such case PBD (Plastic Board Drain) was not effective in obtaining desired degree of consolidation.

  • The evaluation of earthquake load on the surface is very important factor for the seismic reinforcement of existing building, and the magnitude of earthquake load depends on a shear wave velocity profile of soil under a building. To determine a shear wave velocity profile under a existing building, test method should be able to determine a reliable shear wave velocity profile under conditions such as heavy background noise and the small test area, and be sensitive to the variation of material property. In this research, HWAW (Harmonic Wavelet Analysis of Waves) method is applied to determine a shear wave velocity profile under a existing building. In this paper, through numerical simulations and field tests, the feasibility of the proposed method was shown.
