  • The scale effect should be considered to determine the bearing capacity and settlement of footings from Plate-Load Test, because of the size difference between a footing and a loading plate. To analyze characteristics of bearing capacity and settlement according to the difference of loading plate sizes, model tests were performed with four different sizes of square plate, which are B=10, 15, 20 and 25cm, on five different kinds of subsoil. Based on the analyzed results, this paper also proposes a method of bearing capacity and settlement determination, where scale effect is considered depending on the mixing ratio of sand and clay. Until now, uneconomic constructions have been conducted because of unreasonable evaluation in estimating bearing capacity and settlement of footings from Plate-Load Test in fields. In the application of the formula proposed in this research to field problems, it is expected that evaluation of bearing capacity and settlement of footings can be more reliable and more economic construction can be achieved.

  • This paper investigates the effectiveness of quick lime piles for soft ground improvement. The field tests based on the results of the laboratory test were performed, and the results of field tests were compared with those of numerical analyses(FEM). The results of the field test showed that the domestic quick lime was very effective in reducing the water contents of the surrounding ground quickly due to its characteristics such as digestion, absorption, and exothermic reactions. Accordingly, consolidation occurred without any additional load increment and the shear strength of surrounding ground was increased more than twice. Therefore the quick lime pile method could be considered as an excellent improvement technique reducing the improvement period for soft ground. For the practical applications of the quick lime pile method, issues such as hydration heat, particulation and equipment enhancement should be solved through continuous research and development.

  • The efficiency of the current design methods for computing pile resistances is analyzed using field load-settlement tests results. Twelve load-settlement test data for drilled shafts and bored piles were obtained from the literature. These load-test data were fitted using the t-z method. Subsequently, the ultimate resistances were evaluated based upon the failure criteria from following methods: (1) the Davisson's approach and (2) settlement corresponding to 5% or 10% shaft diameter approach. The ultimate resistances for these drilled shafts and bored piles were also predicted using methods based on the design code from North America (United States, Canada), Europe, and Asia (Japan). The pile resistances determined from field load-settlement tests were compared with those calculated using the design codes. The comparisons show that most design codes predict a conservative resistance for drilled shafts and bored piles. However, in the case of drilled shafts, we find that some of the design codes can over-predict the resistance and, therefore, should be applied cautiously. This research also shows that the t-z method can be successfully used to predict the ultimate resistance and the load transfer mechanism for a single pile.

  • The problems like a deterioration of loading bearing capacity, an exaggeration of settlement and lateral deformation are able to be generated, meanwhile structures are built in soft ground. Top-Base method is belonged to a rigidity mat foundation method which is used to surface treatment of soft ground. This method makes an effect to increase the bearing capacity of foundation using friction force, and prevent the differential settlement. Further more, the In-Situ Top-Base method has advantages in the phase of economic effect by reduction of the construction cost and offers an expediency on construction comparing with precast products. This paper presents the way of the estimation of bearing capacity for In-Situ Top-Base method through field plate load test in soft ground. It utilizes the results to a future design by analyzing the properties in the existing study and designs through these analysis and calculating the top-base method's reasonable range.

  • The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the rock mass conditions with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. Therefore, a database which includes 13 load tests performed on cast-in-place concrete piles and soil investigation data at the field test sites was made first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. Pressuremeter modulus and limit pressure, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. In addition, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.

  • Generally, Sewage Treatment Plants(STPs) are complexes systems in which a range of physical, chemical and biological processes occur. However, their performance strongly depends on the know-how acquired by the field-engineer. Recently, in order to solve this situations, various operation and management technologies based on the Instrumentation, Control and Automation(ICA) have been developed. As a economies-environmental affect point of view, this study was for the performance evaluation and assessment of results from the Smart Operation System(SOS) in full-scale STP. The SOS in STP consisted of the process monitoring module, including real-time influent prediction and effluent simulation, and the Smart Air Control(SAC) module. According to the results from field test for 2 years, the results of economical evaluation, amount of benefits and cost saving by the SOS have shown to be much higher than that of traditional operation. Nevertheless, the removal load(kg/yr) of BOD 13.3 %, COD 28.2 %, TN 44.4 % and TP 20.8 % were increased, respectively. Remarkable improvement of removal load could be achieved after the SOS was adapted. It was concerned that the SOS offer a user friendly functionalities and cost saving needed by the field-engineers. In addition, it was expected that the results of this study would supply helpful information for design and cost saving for the SOS in full-scale STP.

  • The quality of track-bed fills of railways has been controlled by field measurements of density (${\gamma}_d$) and the results of plate-load tests. The control measures are compatible with the design procedures whose design parameter is $k_{30}$ for both ordinary-speed railways and high-speed railways. However, one of fatal flaws of the design procedures is that there are no simple laboratory measurement procedures for the design parameters ($k_{30}$ or, $E_{v2}$ and $E_{v2}/E_{v1}$) in design stage. A new quality control procedure, in parallel with the advent of the new design procedure, is being proposed. This procedure is based upon P-wave velocity involving consistently the evaluation of design parameters in design stage and the field measurements during construction. The key concept of the procedure is that the target value for field compaction control is the P-wave velocity determined at OMC using modified compaction test, and direct-arrival method is used for the field measurements during construction. The procedure was verified at a test site and the p-wave velocity turned out to be an excellent control measure. The specifications for the control also include field compaction water content of $OMC{\pm}2%$ as well as the p-wave velocity.

  • This study is about the case applied of a shallow foundation reinforcement method for a low/mid-rise building where a relatively small load is applied by using a soil stabilized material that utilizes recycled resources. First, laboratory mixing test was conducted for four mixing ratios in order to derive the optimal mixing ratio in the field. Using the derived optimal mixing ratio, it was applied as a shallow foundation for the building in the field. The field application method used a simple process of compaction by the soil mixedure with the original soil and the soil stabilized material in the field. After field application, a plate bearing test was performed on one original ground and two improved ground to confirm the allowable bearing capacity. As a result of checking the bearing capacity, it was found that sufficient bearing capacity was exhibited. Therefore, it was confirmed that it can be used as a shallow foundation for the building.

  • In this study, a field test of uplift load was carried out using 15 greenhouse foundations fabricated in full scale on a sand soil to examine the uplift capacity of plastic film greenhouse and glasshouse foundations for disasterproof standard. As a result, the maximum uplift capacity of the target greenhouse foundations was shown to be in the range from 11.6kN to 82.4kN according to the differences between the forms and sizes of the foundation. As a result of the examination of the applicability using the field uplift load test result of the theoretical equation proposed for maximum uplift capacity calculation of greenhouse foundations, we found that in general, the conventional theoretical equation for the calculation provided numerical values close to the field test results. However, the soil considered in this study was a sand; thus, in the future, verifying the conventional theoretical equation for the uplift capacity calculation of a cohesive soil would be necessary.

  • Experiments were performed to study the cyclic behavior of framed steel walls with thin web plates. Five specimens of single-bay and three-story steel plate walls were tested for cyclic lateral load. The parameters for the test specimens included the plate thickness and the column strength. Based on the test results, the strength, deformability, and energy dissipation capacity of the framed steel walls were studied. The test results showed that the behavioral characteristics of the framed steel walls with thin web plates were different in many aspects from those of the conventional braced frame, and the steel wall with a stiffened web plate exhibited cantilever action, high strength, and low ductility. With the framed steel plate walls, local plate buckling and tension-field action developed in the thin web plates, and plastic deformation was uniformly distributed along the wall's height. As a result, the framed steel plate walls exhibited combined flexural and shear deformation, but they also showed high strength and energy dissipation capacity. Moreover, such walls have high deformability, which was equivalent to that of the conventional moment frame. Frame members such as columns and beams, however, must be designed to resist the tension-field action of the thin web plates. If the column does not have sufficient strength, and if its sections are not compact enough, the overall strength of the framed steel wall might be significantly decreased by the development of the soft-story mechanism. The framed steel walls with thin web plates have advantages, such as high deformability and high strength. Therefore, they can be used as ductile elements in earthquake-resistant systems.
