  • Construction of power plants and T&D facilities is so difficult because of the civil complaints and the additional cost according to the concerning field conditions. Therefore, various researches and methods have been considered to get solutions in the demand side and energy storage systems have been in the spotlight because of the various functions such as peak shaving, load shifting, and power system stabilizing, and so on. Residential small size batteries are considered in this paper and the economic analysis is carried out to evaluate the reasonable subsidy levels for the deployment of energy storage systems. Various economic parties are considered to find reasonable subsidy level comparing each other, which parties consist of utilities, participants and non-participants in general. The evaluation is based on California Standard Practice Test and the results are able to be used as subsidy guidelines.

  • This thesis is to investigate the sliding behavior of cantilever retaining wall by using the commercially available program of FLAC to simulate its behavior numerically. Cantilever retaining walls with flat base, sloped base and base with shear key, uniform surcharges being applied on the surface of backfill, were investigated to figure out appropriate location of shear key beneath the base of wall and, thus, its applicability to field condition was assessed by comparing the analyzed results to each other. On the other hand, previously performed centrifuge model test results (Eum, 1996) were analyzed numerically with FLAC to compare test results with respect to characteristics of load-settlement of surcharges and load-lateral movement of wall. Based on the failure mechanism observed during centrifuge tests, limit equilibrium method of finding the ultimate load inducing the sliding failure of wall was used to compare with values of the ultimate load obtained from conventional method of limit equilibrium method. Therefore, appropriate location of shear key was determined to mobilize the maximum resistance against sliding failure of wall.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of TiN coating on the fatigue fracture of dental implant system with various cyclic loads. TiN coated abutment screw, the fixture, and abutment of internal hex type were prepared for fatigue test. The fatigue test was carried out according to ISO 14801:2003(E) using tensile and compression tester with repeated load from 30% to 80% of static fracture force. Morphology and fractured surface was observed by field emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope(EDS). The fracture cycle drastically decreased as repeated load increased. Especially, in the case of TiN-coated abutment screw, fracture cycle increased compared to non-coated abutment screw. The fatigue crack was propagated fast as repeated load increased. The plastic deformation region decreased, whereas, cleavage fracture region increased as repeated load increased.

  • An experimental evaluation of crack propagation and post-cracking behavior in steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams, using full-field displacements obtained from the digital image correlation technique is presented. Surface displacements and strains during the fracture test of notched SFRC beams with volume fractions ($V_f$) of steel fibers equal to 0.5 and 0.75% are analyzed. An analysis procedure for determining the crack opening width over the depth of the beam during crack propagation in the flexure test is presented. The crack opening width is established as a function of the crack tip opening displacement and the residual flexural strength of SFRC beams. The softening in the post-peak load response is associated with the rapid surface crack propagation for small increases in crack tip opening displacement. The load recovery in the flexural response of SFRC is associated with a hinge-type behavior in the beam. For the stress gradient produced by flexure, the hinge is established before load recovery is initiated. The resistance provided by the fibers to the opening of the hinge produces the load recovery in the flexural response.

  • When calculating bearing capacity and settlement of actual foundation from plate test result fur design and construction of shallow foundation, scale effect should be considered. But, adequate guide and test result of scale effect were not prepared yet in Korea. So, to analyze the relations of bearing capacity and settlement as the difference of loading plate sizes, model test and field loading test were performed with different loading plate on weathered-granite layer. Model tests were conducted with water content, compaction number, saturated unit weight and plate size(Dl5, 25cm) in soil-box$(2,000\times 2,000\times 1,000mm)$ formed soil layer. Field loading tests were carried out with diameters of loading plate$(D15, 25, 30, 40, 75\times 75, 140\times 210cm)$ on the same soil condition. Finally, we presented the prediction formula of bearing and settlement for computating scale offset in design of shallow foundation through result analysis of load test and numerical simulation on weathered soil and rock.

  • This paper presents the analysis and experiment results on the electrical and thermal characteristics of metal insulation (MI) REBCO racetrack coil, which was wound with stainless steel (SS) tape between turn-to-turn layers, under rotating magnetic field and conduction cooling system. Although the field windings of superconducting rotating machine are designed to operate on a direct current, they may be subjected to external magnetic field due to the unsynchronized armature windings during electrical or mechanical load fluctuations. The field windings show the voltage and magnetic field fluctuations and the critical current reduction when they are exposed to an external magnetic field. Moreover, the cryogenic cooling conditions are also identified as the factors that affect the electrical and thermal characteristics of the HTS coil because the characteristic resistance changes according to the cryogenic cooling conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of external magnetic field on the electrical and thermal characteristics of MI-SS racetrack coil for further development reliable HTS field windings of superconducting rotating machine. First, the major components of the experiment test (i.e., HTS racetrack coil construction, armature winding of 75 kW class induction motor, and conduction cooling system) were fabricated and assembled. Then, the MI racetrack coil was performed under liquid nitrogen bath and conduction cooling conditions to estimate the key parameters (i.e., critical current, time constant, and characteristic resistance) for the test coil in the steady state operation. Further, the test coil was charged to the target value under conduction cooling of 35 K then exposed to the rotating magnetic field, which was generated by three phrase armature windings of 75 kW class induction motor, to investigate the electrical and thermal characteristics during the transient state.

  • A full-scale field test was conducted to investigate the arching effect of an embankment pile. The arching effect calculated from the test results was compared with theoretical values. Measurements obtained from a load cell and an earth pressure cell during the field test reflected the arching effect of the embankment pile well. The arching effect measured by load cells for an embankment height of 3m or less was smaller than the theoretical value with the assumption of plain strain. The measured effect for a height of 4 m or more was larger than the theoretical value. In contrast to the consistent decrease of the theoretical arching effect, the arching effect obtained from the field test shows continually increasing trends. The arching effects calculated from the earth pressure cells were greater than those from the theory under the plain strain assumption, but the trend was similar to the theoretical one. The arching effects measured by the earth pressure cells an embankment heights of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 m were 1.05, 1.23, 1.29, 1.28, and 1.29 times greater than those from the theory under the assumption of plain strain. The arching effects from the field test were much greater than those from the theory under the installation of a pile grid.

  • This study results of performed field load test in order to estimate the best pile length assessment and allowable bearing capacity of the pile foundation. End of initial driving(EOID) and restrike of pile dynamic loading tests were performed to calculate allowable bearing capacity of the experimental pile side and results were compared with the allowable bearing capacity estimated by theory. The results of allowable bearing capacity by EOID test is $1.08{\sim}1.21$ in the range of compared to the capacity calculated by the Structure Foundation Design Criterion. Allowable bearing Capacity by restrike of pile dynamic loading test is $1.32{\sim}1.48$ in the range of compared to the Structure Foundation Design Criterion. The Foundation Design Criterion underestimated the pile capacity. If the bearing capacity calculated by Structure Foundation Design Criterion is 100, EOID of pile dynamic loading test is 116, restrike of pile dynamic loading test is 138 for 20m pile used in this experimental.

  • Deep drawing process, one of sheet metal forming methods, is very useful in the industrial field because of its efficiency The deep drawing is affected by many process variables, such as blank shapes, shape radii of the punch and die, formability of materials and so on. Especially, blank shape is very important formability factor. In this study, in order to investigate the effects of blank shape, we suggested three kinds of blank shapes and examined friction test about three conditions. We measured punch load distribution according to punch stroke under the conditions of each punch and die shape radii and observed punch load of elliptical cup forming.

  • The accelerated testing technique using the equivalent load condition plays an important part in development process. However, in the industrial field, the theoretical background and advantages of this accelerated testing technique have been lack of understanding. Because the environmental durability condition forms the foundation of the accelerated testing technique, it is important to analyze the loading components and damage in service environment. In this work, we present the theoretical background and process for accelerated testing, and introduce our accelerated equivalent load analysis program. We developed the GUI program, and the user can easily obtain the result by selecting the program module.
