Since the demonstration that the transgenic plants expressing tobacco mosaic virus(TMV) coat protein(CP) gene showed resistance to TMV infection, there have been numerous attempts to produce virus-resistant plant by introducing of a part of or modified viral genome. This study was conducted to investigate the characterization and variability of disease outbreak of transgenic potato(T-potato) with the CP gene of potato leaf roll virus(PLRV) in an isolated field from 2000 to 2002. In the field inspection, incidence of PLRV on T-potato showed only 3.5%, while non-transgenic potato(N-potato) revealed 13.4%. Infection rate of PLRV was considerably low on T-potato with 4.2% compared to 15.4% of N-potato in ELISA tests. Those of potato virus M, potato virus Y and potato virus X on both potatoes were not statistically different. Infection of potato virus A was not observed on both potatoes. Incidence of potato late blight caused by Phytopkhora infestans on T-potato and N-potato did not differ each other with 52.7%, and 50.8%, respectively, Mating type of the causal fungus isolated from both potatoes was all Al types. Results indicates that the CP gene of PLRV affects specifically to the virus in the transgenic potato.

Transparent and flexible electronic devices that are light-weight, unbreakable, low power consumption, optically transparent, and mechanical flexible possibly have great potential in new applications of digital gadgets. Potential applications include transparent displays, heads-up display, sensor, and artificial skin. Recent reports on transparent and flexible field-effect transistors (tf-FETs) have focused on improving mechanical properties, optical transmittance, and performances. Most of tf-FET devices were fabricated with transparent oxide semiconductors which mechanical flexibility is limited. And, there have been no reports of transparent and flexible all-organic tf-FETs fabricated with organic semiconductor channel, gate dielectric, gate electrode, source/drain electrode, and encapsulation for sensor applications. We present the first demonstration of transparent, flexible all-organic sensor based on multifunctional organic FETs with organic semiconductor channel, gate dielectric, and electrodes having a capability of sensing infrared (IR) radiation and mechanical strain. The key component of our device design is to integrate the poly(vinylidene fluoride-triflouroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE) co-polymer directly into transparent and flexible OFETs as a multi-functional dielectric layer, which has both piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. The P(VDF-TrFE) co-polumer gate dielectric has a high sensitivity to the wavelength regime over 800 nm. In particular, wavelength variations of P(VDF-TrFE) molecules coincide with wavelength range of IR radiation from human body (7000 nm ~14000 nm) so that the devices are highly sensitive with IR radiation of human body. Devices were examined by measuring IR light response at different powers. After that, we continued to measure IR response under various bending radius. AC (alternating current) gate biasing method was used to separate the response of direct pyroelectric gate dielectric and other electrical parameters such as mobility, capacitance, and contact resistance. Experiment results demonstrate that the tf-OTFT with high sensitivity to IR radiation can be applied for IR sensors.

In this study, an experiment was carried out on the field applicability of tension measuring devices of the cables in cable-stayed bridges. The vibration method was used to estimate the tension of cables of cable-stayed bridge, and the mode characteristics of the cable were analyzed using a cable tension measuring device. GTDL360, NI Module, and 9 Axes Motion Sensorwere applied to estimate the cable tension of five target bridges. Numerical analysis of the five target bridges was conducted to analyze the natural frequency of the cable and cable tension. The estimated tension of the cable based on field measurements and estimated tension of cable by numerical analysis were compared with the estimated tension of the cable based on field measurements. The analysis showed that the measured tension of the cable based on field measurements was within the margin of error. Therefore, it is safe to apply these measuring devices to the site. As a result of comparing and analyzing the values of the acceleration-based cable estimation tension and numerical analysis of the field demonstration bridge, the acceleration-based cable estimation of tension is deemed appropriate within the allowable range. On-site applicability analysis revealed limitations of the measuring devices, such as the installation location of sensors and weather conditions, so continuous follow-up research on smart cable tension measuring systems is expected.
The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute plans to develop a coronagraph in collaboration with National Aeronautics and Space Administrative (NASA) and install it on the International Space Station (ISS). The coronagraph is an externally occulted one stage coronagraph with a field of view from 2.5 to 15 solar radii. The observation wavelength is approximately 400 nm where strong Fraunhofer absorption lines from the photosphere are scattered by coronal electrons. Photometric filter observation around this band enables the estimation of 2D electron temperature and electron velocity distribution in the corona. Together with the high time cadence (< 12 min) of corona images to determine the geometric and kinematic parameters of coronal mass ejections, the coronagraph will yield the spatial distribution of electron density by measuring the polarized brightness. For the purpose of technical demonstration, we intend to observe the total solar eclipse in 2017 August for the filter system and to perform a stratospheric balloon experiment in 2019 for the engineering model of the coronagraph. The coronagraph is planned to be installed on the ISS in 2021 for addressing a number of questions (e.g. coronal heating and solar wind acceleration) that are both fundamental and practically important in the physics of the solar corona and of the heliosphere.

The coronagraph is an externally occulted one-stage coronagraph with a field of view from 3 to 15 solar radii. The observation wavelength is approximately 400 nm, where strong Fraunhofer absorption lines from the photosphere experience thermal broadening and Doppler shift through scattering by coronal electrons. This study was to analysis teaching strategies, types of inquiry activities and the relationship between science concepts and inquiry activities presented in science textbooks. As a result of the study, first, the inquiry-based teaching strategies presented in science textbooks were experiment, simulation, demonstration, and field study. Second, there were 53 inquiry activities presented in 8 units related to the earth science area of science textbooks, and the types of inquiry activities were experimental observation (EO) 18, mock activity (SA) 20, investigation discussion and presentation (IP). It was analyzed as 12, data interpretation (ID) 2, and express (EX) 1 piece. Third, the relationship between inquiry activities and science concepts presented in science textbooks was analyzed. As a result of the analysis, out of a total of 42 inquiry activities, 21 inquiry activities corresponded to EA (explicit activities), in which the result of inquiry activities was directly and explicitly linked to science concepts. And IA (implicit activities), which is an implicit inquiry activity in which science concepts must be inferred using the results of inquiry activities, were analyzed as 21. In particular, IA (implicit activities), which is an implicit inquiry activity, can be said to be the result of reflecting the characteristics of earth science areas where many simulated activities (SA) are used. This is considered to be a matter to be considered in the process of developing various elementary science textbooks in the future.

The guarantee of the performance of the engineered barriers in a geological repository is very important for the long-term safety of disposal as well as the efficient design of the repository. Therefore, the performance of the engineered barriers under repository condition should be demonstrated by in-situ experiments conducted in an underground research laboratory. This article provides a review of the major in-situ experiments that have been carried out over the past several decades at underground research laboratories around the world to validate the performance of engineered barriers of a repository, as well as their results. In-situ experiments to study the coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical behavior of the engineered barrier system used to simulate the post-closure performance of the repository are analyzed as a priority. In addition, in-situ experiments to investigate the performance of the buffer material under a real repository environment have been reviewed. State-of-the art in-situ validations of the buffer-concrete interaction, and the installation of the buffer, backfill and plug, as well as characterization of the near-field rock and the corrosion of the canister materials are, also performed.

Skid resistance pavement is an accessory to the road and is a facility for the safe driving of cars by increasing the skid resistance of road pavement. In particular, in bad weather conditions such as snow, rain, and black ice, the skid resistance performance of skid resistance pavement greatly affects the safety of road traffic and drivers. However, BPT(British Pendulum Tester) has a test area of only 0.009 m2, making it difficult to represent the overall packaging surface. A reliable method of evaluating slip resistance performance is needed for maintaining non-slip packaging. In this study, the conventional BPT test and the skid resistance performance evaluation method of the PFT(Pavement Friction Tester) and µGT(Micro Grip Tester) tests were compared through guidelines and standard investigations and applied to the field skid resistance performance evaluation. In addition, skid resistance pavement with different skid resistance performance was installed at the test-bed and actual road demonstration sites to compare BPN(British Pendulum Number), SN(Skid Number), GN(Grip Number), and to derive correlations for each performance evaluation method. As a result of the experiment, SN and GN showed similar skid resistance performance, and the GN value was derived similar to BPN × 0.01.
