  • Microstructure and mechanical properties of fibrous $A1_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)/t-ZrO_2$ composite were investigated depending on the dimensional array. By the change of stacking arrangement of fibrous filaments, 2 and 3-dimensional fibrous composites were successfully obtained without bulk defects such as shrinkage cavity and cracks. The maximum mechanical properties were achieved In the 3-dimensional array composite, due to the fine fibrous and dense microstructure control, in which the values of vickers hardness, fracture toughness and bending strength were about 1507 Hv, $7.2MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 650 MPa, respectively.

  • Tissue engineering scaffolds play a critical role in regulating the reconstructed human tissue development. Various types of scaffolds have been developed in recent years, including fibrous matrix and foam-like scaffolds. The design of scaffold materials has been investigated extensively. However, the design of physical structure of the scaffold, especially fibrous matrices, has not received much attention. This paper compares the different characteristics of fibrous and foam-like scaffolds, and reviews regulatory roles of important scaffold properties, including surface geometry, scaffold configuration, pore structure, mechanical property and bioactivity. Tissue regeneration, cell organization, proliferation and differentiation under different microstructures were evaluated. The importance of proper scaffold selection and design is further discussed with the examples of bone tissue engineering and stem cell tissue engineering. This review addresses the importance of scaffold microstructure and provides insights in designing appropriate scaffold structure for different applications of tissue engineering.

  • Fibrous monolithic control of$ Al_2$$O_3$ -$ZrO_2$composite was investigated by multi-pass extrusion process. To obtain sound $Al_2$$O_3$-X $O_2$sintered bodies, burning out and sintering process were carefully carried out. The sintered bodies showed continuous, fibrous monolithic microstructure without any swelling. Many microcracks were observed at the $Al_2$$O_3$-$ZrO_2$interfaces due to the mismatching of thermal expansion coefficient between $Al_2$$O_3$ and $ZrO_2$phase. Most of m- $ZrO_2$grains included twin defects such as (001), (010) and (011) type to accommodate the phase transformation induced stress.

  • This paper deals with the effect of siliceous slurry coating on concrete microstructure under damp environment. This material is mixed inorganic powder consisted of silica, cement and fine sand and water. Water pressure was given on the coated surface of concrete. for estimation on effect of siliceous slurry coating, microstructure of coated concrete was observed through SEM, and chemical components of crystals were analyzed with X-ray diffraction and EDX. A number of needle and fibrous crystals were produced in microstructure. And based on X-ray diffraction and EDX, needle crystal mainly consist of Al, Si, and Ca, and it is concluded to be ettringite. Fibrous crystals consist of Ca and Si, and it to be calcium silicate hydrate.

  • Fibrous $Al_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)/t-ZrO_2$ composites having core/shell structure were fabricated by multi-extrusion process. The effect o volume fraction between core ($Al_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)$) and shell ($t-ZrO_2$ was investigated to understand the relationship between microstructure and material properites, in which the volume fractions of core and shell were varied as 40:60, 50:50 and 60:40. The material properties o hardness and bending strength were increased as the volume fraction of core was increased, and their maximum values were about 1320 Hv and 750MPa, respectively. However, as the volume fraction of core increased, the values of relative density and fracture toughness were decreased from 97.1 to $96.5\%$ and from $6.5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ to $5.7MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • Carbon-ceramic composites were fabricated by using fly ash and PANOX fibers as reinforcement. Fly ash, because of its small size particles e.g. submicron to micron level can be effectively dispersed along with fibrous reinforcements. Phenolic resin was used as carbon precursor. Both dry as well as wet methods were used for forming composites. The resulting composites were characterized for their microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties. The microstructure and mechanical properties of composites are found to be dependent on type of the fly ash, fibrous reinforcements as well as processing parameters. The addition of fly ash improves hardness and the fibers, which get co-carbonized on heat treatment, increase the flexural strength of the carbon-ceramic composites. Composites with dual reinforcement exhibit about 30-40% higher strength as compared to the composites made with single reinforcement, either with fly ash as filler or with chopped fibers.
