  • While ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is commonly reinforced with micro straight steel fibers in existing applications, studies have indicated that the use of deformed steel macro-fibers leads to enhanced ductility and post-peak responses for UHPC structural elements, which is of particular importance for earthquake-resistant structures. However, there are potential concerns regarding the use of UHPC reinforced with macro-fibers due to the issues of workability and fiber distribution. The objective of this study was to address these issues by extensively investigating the restricted and non-restricted deformability, filling ability, horizontal and vertical velocities, and passing ability of UHPC containing macro hooked-end steel fibers. A new approach is suggested to examine the homogeneity of fiber distribution in UHPC. The influences of ultra-fine fillers and steel macro-fibers on the workability of fresh UHPC and the mechanics of hardened UHPC were examined. It was found that although increasing the ratio of quartz powder to cement led to an improvement in the workability and tensile strain hardening behavior of UHPC, it reduced the fiber distribution homogeneity. The addition of 1% volume fraction of macro-fibers in UHPC improved workability, but reduced its compressive strength, which is contrary to the effect of micro-fiber inclusion in UHPC.

  • This paper presents a comparative evaluation of five different types of steel fibers used as reinforcing material in concrete beams. Two types of plain and RC beams were prepared to compare the relative flexural behavior. The fibers used were dog bone (paddled), both ends hooked. コ-type straight. crimped and wavy type with aspect ratio of 43 to 75. Fiber volume fraction of 1 to 2% were used while shear span to depth ratio (aid) and steel ratio p were fixed. Fiber reinforcement effect index Ef and effective toughness index Te were adopted to evaluate fiber reinforcing effects. The effect of fiber reinforcement on flexural strength is higher in plain beams than in RC beams. Hooked and dog bone type fibers were found to be more effective than the other type ones in enhancing the flexural strength and post-peak energy absorption capacity of concrete beams.

  • Direct tensile response of strain hardening cement composites(SHCC) depends primarily on the material's tensile response, which is a water cement ratio, direct function of fiber and matrix characteristics, the bond between them, and the fiber volume fraction. This paper discusses effect of aspect ratio of the direct tensile response of SHCC with PET and PVA fibers. The main variables considered include the aspect ratio of PET fibers(Aspect ratio, ${\ell}/d_f$ : 150, 300, 600). For the same mixture proportion, PET1.5+PVA0.5-300 and PET1.5+PVA 0.5-600(Aspect ratio 300, 600) showed better overall behavior(Pseudo strain-hardening, Multiple cracking) than specimens with PET1.5+PVA0.5-150(Aspect ratio 150). Tensile strain of PET1.5+PVA0.5-300 and PET1.5+PVA 0.5-600 at ultimate tensile stress were 0.5, 2.0% respectively.

  • In the present study, the various dynamic properties of MWCNT embedded fiber reinforced polymer uniform and tapered composite (MWCNT-FRP) plates are investigated. Various configurations of a tapered composite plate with ply-drop off and uniform composite plate have been considered for the development of the finite element formulation and experimental investigations. First order shear deformation theory (FSDT) has been used to derive the kinetic and potential energy equations of the hybrid composite plates by including the effect of rotary inertia, shear deformation and non-uniformity in thickness of the plate. The governing equations of motion of FRP composite plates without and with MWCNT reinforcement are derived by considering a nine- node rectangular element with five degrees of freedom (DOF) at each node. The effectiveness of the developed finite element formulation has been demonstrated by comparing the natural frequencies and damping ratio of FRP composite plates without and with MWCNT reinforcement obtained experimentally. Various parametric studies are also performed to study the effect of CNT volume fraction and CNT aspect ratio of the composite plate on the natural frequencies of different configurations of CNT reinforced hybrid composite plates. Further the forced vibration analysis is performed to compare the dynamic response of the various configurations of MWCNT-GFRP composite plate with GFRP composite plate under harmonic excitations. It was observed that the fundamental natural frequency and damping ratio of the GFRP composite plate increase approximately 8% and 37% respectively with 0.5wt% reinforcement of MWCNT under CFCF boundary condition. The natural frequencies of MWCNT-GFRP hybrid composite plates tend to decrease with the increase of MWCNT volume fraction beyond 2% due to agglomeration of CNT's. It is also observed that the aspect ratio of the CNT has negligible effect on the improvement of dynamics properties due to randomly orientation of CNT's.

  • The tensile strength and failure mechanisms of glass fiber polypropylene (GF/PP) composites are investigated in the temperature range from ambient to 8$0^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength increases as fiber volume fraction ratio increase. The tensile strength shows a maximum at ambient temperature, and it tens to decrease as temperature goes up. Major failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites can be classified as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out, delamination and matrix deformation.

  • An analysis fur the warping process has been performed to design the warper beam. Nonlinear material response is included in the physical model of polyester yarn. Large deformation finite element simulation considering contact and frictional analysis are used to obtain the pressure on the barrel of the warper beam. Loading condition on the flange is assumed by using the pressure on the barrel, winding number of yarn, Poisson's ratio of fiber, and fiber volume fraction. By using the above loading conditions NASTRAN finite element simulation is performed to calculate stress distribution and deformation of the warper beam. By comparing the deformed shape of the flange with experimental result, loading condition on the flange has been obtained. The obtained loading conditions on the barrel and flange can be utilized to design the warper beam.

  • In this paper, effect of steel fiber inclusion, compressive strength of matrix, shear reinforcement and shear span to depth ratio on the flexural behavior of UHPFRC(Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete) were investigated with test of 10-UHPFRC beam specimens. All test specimens were subjected to the flexural static loading. It was shown that steel fiber significantly improve the shear strength of UHPFRC beams. 2% volume fraction of steel fiber change the mode of failure from shear failure to flexural failure and delayed the failure of compressive strut with comparatively short shear span to depth ratio. UHPFRC beams without steel fiber had a 45-degree crack angle and fiber reinforced one had lower crack angle. Shear reinforcement contribution on shear strength of beams can be calculated by 45-degree truss model with acceptable conservatism. Using test results, French and Korean UHPFRC design recommendations were evaluated. French recommendation have shown conservative results on flexural behavior but Korean recommendation have shown overestimation for flexural strength. Both recommendations have shown the conservatism on the flexural ductility and shear strength either.

  • Shape Memory Polymer Composites (SMPC) have gained popularity over the last few decades due to its flexible shape memory behaviour over wide range of strains and temperatures. In this paper, non-linear bending analysis has been carried out for SMPC beam under the application of uniformly distributed transverse load (UDL). Simplified C0 continuity Finite Element Method (FEM) based on Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory (HSDT) has been adopted for flexural analysis of SMPC. The numerical solutions are obtained by iterative Newton Raphson method. Material properties of SMPC with Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) as matrix and carbon fibre as reinforcements, have been calculated by theory of volume averaging. Effect of temperature on SMPC has been evaluated for numerous parameters for instance number of layers, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, volume fraction of carbon fiber and laminate stacking orientation. Moreover, deflection profile over unit length and behavior of stresses across thickness are also presented to elaborate the effect of glass transition temperature (Tg). Present study provides detailed explanation on effect of different parameters on the bending of SMPC beam for large strain over a broad span of temperature from 273-373K, which encompasses glass transition region of SMPC.

  • Fiber-reinforced composites transmitting microwaves of certain frequencies or bands were proposed. These frequency selective fabric composites(FSFCs) are fabricated by weaving carbon fibers and dielectric fibers that build periodic patterns. Design parameters affecting the electromagnetic characteristics of FSFCs were widely discussed, Then the electromagnetic characteristics of a fabricated plain-weave FSEC were investigated with regard to the electrical conductivities of carbon roving, the fiber undulation, and the aperture-to-cell ratio, for the electrical conductivities, its dependence on frequency as well as on the fiber volume fraction of carbon roving was taken into account. Constituent material properties and the fiber undulation had little effect on the EM properties of the fabricated FSFC, while the aperture-to-cell ratio made a profound effect on them.
