In this study, film type radiation sensor tips are fabricated for remote sensing of X or g-ray with inorganic scintillators and plastic optical fiber. The visible range of light from the inorganic scintillator that is generated by X and g-ray is guided by the plastic optical fiber and is measured by optical detector and power-meter. It is expected that the fiber-optic radiation sensor which is possible to be developed based on this study is used for remote, fast and exact sensing of X or g-ray because of its characteristics such as very small size, light weight and no interference to electromagnetic fields.
This paper described the method and the result of making a dynamic fiber optic gyrocompass measuring the heading angles of ships by processing the output signal from a constant rotating fiber optic sensor and also showed the measurement to test the performance of our system. Considerig an economical view we designed and ordered a cheap medium grade fiber densors increased not fiber length but the diameter of a fiber sensing loop. The scale factor and noise was 267mV/deg/s and 2 deg/hr/$\sqrt{Hz}(1{\sigma})$, respectively. We made the dynamic fiber optic gyrocompass by this sensor. We measured the heading angles in an arbitrary direction to evaluate the accuracy of our system and the root mean square error was $0.4^\circ$. Moreover, we measured the angles ineach direction of $45^\circ$. successive rotation to know whether this system has distoritions in a specific direction or not and the root mean square error in this case was $0.5^\circ$.

This paper reports fabrication and characterization of a pressure sensor using a pitch-based carbon fiber. Pitch-based carbon fibers have been shown to exhibit the piezoresistive effect, in which the electric resistance of the carbon fiber changes under mechanical deformation. The main structure of pressure sensors was built by performing backside etching on a SOI wafer and creating a suspended square membrane on the front side. An AC electric field which causes dielectrophoresis was used for the alignment and deposition of a carbon fiber across the microscale gap between two electrodes on the membrane. The fabricated pressure sensors were tested by applying static pressure to the membrane and measuring the resistance change of the carbon fiber. The resistance change of carbon fibers clearly shows linear response to the applied pressure and the calculated sensitivities of pressure sensors are $0.25{\sim}0.35 and 61.8 ${\Omega}/k{\Omega}{\cdot}bar$ for thicker and thinner membrane, respectively. All these observations demonstrated the possibilities of carbon fiber-based pressure sensors.

This paper presents the use of a novel fiber optic accelerometer system to monitor ambient vibration (both wind-induced one and vehicle-induced) of a real bridge structure. This sensor system integrates the $Moir\'{e}$ fringe phenomenon with fiber optics to achieve accurate and reliable measurements. A low-cost signal processing unit implements unique algorithms to further enhance the resolution and increase the dynamic bandwidth of the sensors. The fiber optic accelerometer has two major benefits in using this fiber optic accelerometer system for monitoring civil engineering structures. One is its immunity to electromagnetic (EM) interference making it suitable for difficult applications in such environments involving strong EM fields, electrical spark-induced explosion risks, and cabling problems, prohibiting the use of conventional electromagnetic accelerometers. The other is its ability to measure both low- and high-amplitude vibrations with a constantly high resolution without pre-setting a gain level, as usually required in a conventional accelerometer. The second benefit makes the sensor system particularly useful for real-time measurement of both ambient vibration (that is often used for structural health monitoring) and strong motion such as earthquake. Especially, the semi-strong motion and the small ambient one are successfully simulated and measured by using the new fiber optic accelerometer in the experiment of the structural health monitoring of a real bridge.
In this paper, we introduce a multi purpose environmental monitoring system developed as a commercially available standard using the technique of hetero-core spliced fiber optic sensor. The monitoring system has been tested and evaluated in a possible outdoor condition in view of the full scaled operation at actual sites to be monitored. Additionally, the developed system in this work conveniently provides us with various options of sensor modules intended for monitoring such physical quantities as displacement, distortion, pressure, binary states, and liquid adhesion. Two channels of optical fiber line were monitored, in each of which three displacement sensor modules were connected in series, in order to examine the performance to a pseudo-cracking experiment in the outdoor situation, and to clarify temperature influences to the system in terms of the coupling of optical connectors and the OTDR stability. The pseudo-cracking experiment successfully observed the actually given cracks by means of calculation based on the detected displacement values and their geometrical arrangement of the used sensor modules. And the robustness to the temperature is verified in the various temperature change.
A novel fiber optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor using cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) prism with the spectral modulation is presented. The SPR sensor chip is fabricated using the SU-8 photolithography, Ni-electroplating and COC injection molding process. The sidewall of the COC prism is partially deposited with Au/Cr (45/2.nm thickness) by e-beam evaporator, and the thermal bonding process is conducted for micro fluidic channels and optical fibers alignment. The SPR spectrum for a phosphate buffered saline (0.1.M PBS, pH.7.2) solution shows a distinctive dip at 1300.nm wavelength, which shifts toward longer wavelength with respect to the bovine serum albumin (BSA)concentrations. The sensitivity of the wavelength shift is $1.16\;nm{\cdot}{\mu}g^{-1}{\cdot}{\mu}l^{-1}$. From the wavelength of SPR dips, the refractive indices (RI) of the BSA solutions can be theoretically calculated using Kretchmann configuration, and the change rate of the RI was found to be $2.3{\times}10^{-5}RI{\cdot}{\mu}g^{-1}{\cdot}l^{-1}$. The realized fiber optic SPR sensor with a COC prism has clearly shown the feasibility of a new disposable, low cost and miniaturized SPR biosensor for biochemical molecular analyses.

In this research, the fiber Bragg grating sensors with long gauge for displacement measurement in the long distance is developed and tested. The sensors show an accuracy and a capability for displacement measurement oin long distance. Monitoring using static logger of system of FBG sensor with strained optical fiber shows the capability of measurement in the harsh environment such as strong wind. Measurement of long distance displacement by optical fiber sensor if use $250{\mu}m$ optical fiber and impose some strong pre-tension shows possibility in monitoring of nuclear containment structure.

This paper presents a novel fiber optic tiltmeter system for the health monitoring of large-size structures. The system is composed of a sensor head, a light control unit and a signal processing unit. The sensing mechanism of the sensor head is based on a novel integration of the moire fringe phenomenon with fiber optics to achieve a robust performance in addition to its immunity to EM interference, easy ratting, and low cost. In this paper, a prototype of the fiber optic tiltmeter system has been developed successfully. A low-cost light control unit has been developed to drive the system's optic and electronic components. From an experimental test, the fiber optic tiltmeter is proven to be a prospective sensor for the monitoring of the tilting angle of civil structure with a good linearity. Finally, the test also successfully demonstrates the performance and the potential of the novel fiber optic tiltmeter system to monitor the health of civil infrastructures.

Effect of spectral drift in coherent fiber laser was investigated by injecting optical feedback to Fabry-Perot resonance loop. Er+3 doped fiber laser having unilateral optical feedback loop in Fabry-Perot configuration using two FBGs was fabricated. The optical feedback was found to be effective in linewidth reduction of fiber laser compared to the case without any optical feedback. The linewidth of three fiber lasers using above configuration were measured to be within 3kHz which is resolution-limited performance of self-heterodyne linewidth measurement set-up. The frequency drift measurement using Mach-Zehnder measurement set-up having 200m optical delay-line in one arm showed that the frequency drift rate of optical feedback fiber laser was measured as 300kHz/sec which was better than the case without optical feedback.

This paper describes a fiber optic sensor suitable for non-contact detection of ultrasonic waves. This sensor is based on a fiber optic Sagnac interferometer. Quadrature phase bias between two interfering laser beams in Sagnac loop is introduced by a polarization controller. A stable quadrature phase bias can be confirmed by observing the interferometer output versus phase bias. This method eliminates a digital signal processing for detection of ultrasonic waves using Sagnac interferometer. Interference intensity is affected by the frequency of ultrasonic waves and the time delay of Sagnac loop. Collimator is attached to the end of the probing fiber to focus the light beam onto the specimen surface and to collect the reflected light back into the fiber probe. Ultrasonic waves produced by conventional ultrasonic transducers are detected. This fiber optic sensor based on Sagnac interferometer is very effective for detection of small displacement with high frequency such as ultrasonic waves used in conventional non-destructive testing.
