  • In order to comprise a basic closed-loop control system for hydraulic systems it is necessary to detect the piston rod stroke of a hydraulic cylinder. There are many conventional type sensors which can detect the displacement of cylinders. However, they cannot reveal the original performance normally or they cannot be applied at all where the operating circumstance of cylinders is beyond specifications of sensors. Especially, for the purpose of detecting the strokes of cylinders mounted on heavy equipments, a special exclusive sensor must be used because the operating circumstances of heavy equipments are so severe that general purpose sensors cannot endure such circumstance as shock and a residual vibration induced by rough works. In this paper, an exclusive method for detecting the piston rod stroke for heavy equipments is suggested, which adopts a remote detecting technique using optical fiber sensors. Several experiments using the prototype are executed for verifying the effectiveness of the suggested method and the possibility of the accurate detection of stroke.

  • The tactile force sensor was studied using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). The FBG is able to multiplex easily and is immune to electromagnetic environment. A sensor frame was designed to a cantilever beam type. Strain of a beam is related with the peak shift of a bragg wavelength. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for getting an appropriate thickness from 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm thick. FEM results showed that 0.3 mm thick was suitable for the force range 10 N. The force resolutions of 0.039 N and 0.113 N were obtained with optical spectrum analyser and tunable Fabry-Perot filter, respectively.

  • We present a fiber laser sensor that uses a fiber grating as a strain sensor head and an end-reflector of the laser cavity. A passive wavelength. The long-period grating band-rejection filter showed a wide usable filter wavelength range of about 25 nm, and the intensity of transmitted light increased by 16% for 1nm sensor wavelength shift in trhe measurement range.

  • A new demodulation technique which can be used for the fiber optic acoustic sensor system using Sagnac interferometer is described. The theoretical limitation in dynamic range of the quadrature demodulation technique can be removed by the proposed BPSK(Binary Phase Shift Keying) demodulation technique. Full demodulation of input acoustic signal is possible with just simple electronics by eliminating the necessity of the high frequency phase modulation. This technique is suitable for digital signal processing of fiber optic sensor systems and can be applicable for other interferometers.

  • We proposed and demonstrated a fiber optic sensor for detecting the thermo-optic coefficient of a liquid, based on a cascade of two different FBGs. One of the two FBGs was etched, and its cladding was removed, for evanescent wave coupling with an external liquid. The Bragg wavelength of the non-etched FBG was used as a reference for the temperature of the surrounding liquid. The refractive index (RI) and thermo-optic (T-O) coefficient of a liquid can be detected from the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of the two FBGs, and the variation of the difference in accordance with temperature.

  • In this paper, a fiber-optic voltage sensor for measurement of impulse voltage is implemented. A BSO single crystal is used as a Pockels cell. A new signal processing technique is adopted not only to avoid the influences of external perturbations of transmitting optical fiber, but to improve the frequency response characteristics of the optical voltage sensor. Experimental results show that proposed sensor has maximum ${\pm}$2.5% error rate, and has good frequency response.

  • This paper presents fabrication techniques of the optical fiber position sensor (or spindle state monitoring. These include selection of components such as optical fibers, a laser-diode, a photo-diode, and op-amp IC of the signal process circuit. We also describe electric runout problem. The fabricated sensor has a linearity of $1.7\%$ FSO in the air gap range $0.1\~0.6mm$, a resolution of $0.37{\mu}m$ and a bandwidth of 6.3kHz. Finally, we have successfully operated a magnetic bearing spindle system using the sensors.

  • We propose a transverse load sensor with reconfigurable measurement accuracy based on a microwave photonic filter in the $K_u$ band, incorporating a polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg grating. A prototype sensor with a reconfigurable measurement accuracy tuning range from 6.09 to 9.56 GHz/(N/mm), and corresponding minimal detectable load range from 0.0167 to 0.0263 N/mm, is experimentally demonstrated. The results illustrate that up to 40% manufacturing error in the grating length can be dynamically calibrated to the same corresponding measurement accuracy for the proposed transverse load sensor, by controlling the semiconductor optical amplifier's injection current in the range of 154 to 419 mA.

  • In this study, linearized sweeping of a wavelength sweeping laser was realized. This technique was used to measure the strain on a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor. For linear sweeping, PID control over the wavelength difference between linear and nonlinear sweeping was employed. The performance test showed that linear sweeping with a 46 nm range and a 1 kHz frequency held up well with a 99.5 % decrement in nonlinearity after the 120th feedback. When attached to a strain gage, the FBG sensor registered strain that matched the data sheet within a difference of 4.5[με]. Altogether, linear sweeping can play a leading role in monitoring a safety of large SOC structures as well as in other wavelength sweeping laser related fields.

  • Optical fiber sensors are by now broadly accepted as an innovative and reliable device for structural health monitoring, to be used either embedded into or bonded on structures. The accuracy of the strain measurement achievable by optical fiber sensors is critically dependent on the characteristics of the bonding of the various interface layers involved in the sensor bonding/embedding (structure material and gluing agent, fiber coating and gluing agent, fiber coating and fiber core). In fact, the signal of the bonded/embedded optical fiber sensor must correspond to the strain experienced by the monitored structure, but the quality of each involved interface can affect the strain transfer. This paper faces the characterization, carried on by both mechanical tests and morphological analysis, of the strain transfer function resulting with epoxidic and vinylester gluing agent on polyimide and acrylate coated optical fibers.
