  • Coupling loss variation as the shape of fiber ends and the fiber arrangement in a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity, formed with two optical fibers with dielectric mirror coatings on their ends, is analyzed. For the intended features it is assumed that one of two fibers is processed to have a concave mirror whose curvature is the same as that of the wavefront of the Gaussian beam from the first fiber. In this assumption, it was turned out that the coupling loss at the cavity length of 15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ is less than 0.5% even with tilt angle of 0.2$^{\circ}$, curvature error of 70 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, cavity length error of 8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and lateral alignment error of 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Thus, low loss and high-finesse fiber Fabry-Perot filters whose cavity length is greater than several ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ can be obtained easily if the receiving fiber end is properly formed.

  • Effect of coupling agent on the mechanical properties of PP/GF blend was investigated. The flexural modulus, Izod impact strength, elongation at yield and tensile strength were improved with using coupling agent. Mopological studies revealed that PP and GF were incompatible and addition of coupling agent was very effective to enhance the compatibility, result in mechanical properties.

  • Efforts to obtain more efficient coupling of light from a laser diode to a single mode fiber have continued for various applications such as links for optical fiber communication systems. In TO-can package, configuration of optimized aspherical lens is bi-aspheric and its diameter is 2.4mm. We designed and fabricated aspherical coupling lens by means of glass molding technique under consideration of glass shrinkage. By controlling the aspherical profile error and surface roughness which were below 90nm and 10nm, respectively, we obtained the low coupling loss, 5.40dB, which was able to use for coupling a single mode fiber to laser diode.

  • We developed a novel depth-of-interaction positron emission tomography (PET) detector using wavelength shifting (WLS) fibers and optimized it. The optimization module was designed by using two scintillators and three WLS fibers and attaching a sensor to the end of the WLS fiber. Optimum combinations were obtained through the light collection efficiency and the light collection ratio between sensors depending on coupling materials and reflectors of scintillators, WLS fibers and sensors. The highest light collection efficiency and the light collection ratio between sensors were obtained in the combination of the epoxy (coupling materials)-diffuse reflector (scintillators)-specular reflector (WLS fibers).

  • We report the formation of inner cladding modes in the optical fiber having an inner cladding structure. The inner cladding layer located between the core- and the cladding- layers of a conventional fiber might have, so called, inner cladding mode(s). The brief history of the inner cladding fiber and the spectral properties of the inner cladding mode are presented. By utilizing fiber gratings, the spectral properties of the inner cladding mode formed in Dispersion Compensating Fiber (DCF) are discussed. It was observed that one resonant peak of a long-period fiber grating was not sensitive to the variation on the cladding surface. With a fiber Bragg grating, a small group of unusual resonant Peaks was observed between the main Bragg Peak and the series of usual Peaks resulted from the mode coupling to counter-propagating cladding modes. Within the DCF by using fiber gratings, it is noted, at least one mode can be coupled to the inner cladding mode and a few outer cladding modes are severely affected by the inner cladding of the fiber.

  • Shear wall systems behave as individual wall because of openings like window and elevator cage. When coupling beams are installed in shear walls, they will have high strength and stiffness so that be less damaged by lateral loads like earthquake. However, coupling beam is difficult construction method. And arranging reinforcement of slender coupling beams are especially hard. It is because the details of coupling beam provided by ACI 318 are complex. In this paper, experiments were conducted using coupling beams with 3.5 aspect ratio to improve the details of slender coupling beams provided by ACI 318. Two specimens were proposed for this study. One specimen applied with bundled diagonally reinforcement only. Another specimen applied both bundled diagonally reinforcement and High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) so that coupling beams have half of transverse reinforcement. All specimen were compared with a coupling beam designed according to ACI 318 and were evaluated with hysteretic behaviors. Test results showed that the performance of two specimen suggested in this study were similar to that of coupling beam designed according to current criteria. And it was considered that simplification of the details of reinforcement would be available if transverse reinforcement was reduced by using bundled diagonally reinforcement and HPFRCC.

  • In order to set up the design of micro optical bench, optical coupling efficiencies of two sets of test benches are calculated. Simple linear connections of incoming and outgoing optical fibers with and without ball lenses are designed. Positional errors that are possible in actual fabrication processes we considered in the calculations and their tolerances are determined from -3 ㏈ conditions. For a simple fiber-to-fiber connection, the lateral misalignment should be limited to 2.7 um and tilt error 5.8o. In case of the fiber-to-fiber with ball lens, the working distance between fibers can be extended over 60 um. The optical coupling efficiency depends strongly on the positional errors of ball lenses along the optical axis, and it is also found that the lateral and vertical positional errors should be considered simultaneously in order to keep the high coupling efficiency.

  • Following a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), prestressing concrete containment vessels (PCCVs) may experience high thermal load as well as internal pressure. The high temperature stress would increase the risk of premature damage to the containment, which reduces the safety margin during the increasing internal pressure. However, current investigations cannot clearly address the issues of thermal-pressure coupling effect on damage propagation and thus safety of the containment. Thus, this paper offers three simple and powerful damage parameters to differentiate the severity of damage of the containment. Moreover, despite of the temperature action severely threatening the pressure performance of the containment, the research regarding the improvement of the resistant performance of the containment is quite scarce. Therefore, in this paper, a comprehensive comparison of damage propagation and mechanism between conventional and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) containments is performed. The effects of fiber characteristics parameters on damage propagation of structures following the LOCA are also specifically revealed. It is found that the proposed damage indices can properly indicate state of damage in the containment body and the addition of fiber can be used to obviously mitigate the damage propagation in PCCV considering the thermal-pressure coupling.
