  • We have fabricated a side-illuminated p-i-n photodetectors with evanescently-coupled waveguides for surface hybrid integration in low-cost modules. We adopted WGPD of evanescently-coupled type to have high responsivity and coupling tolerance, and to avoid any reliability problem. This proposed photodetectors have a high responsivity of 1.10 A/W at a wavelength of 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The 1dB coupling tolerance to cleaved fiber and photodetectors is $\pm$3.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the vertical direction and $\pm$11 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in the horizontal direction.

  • In this study we report a wet-etching-based fabrication method for adiabatic optical-fiber tapers (OFTs), and describe their adiabaticity and HE11 mode evolution at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The profile of the fabricated system satisfies the adiabaticity properties well, and the far-field pattern from the etched OFT shows that the fundamental HE11 mode is maintained without a higher-order mode coupling throughout the tapers. In addition, the measured far-field pattern agrees well with the simulated result. The proposed adiabatic OFTs can be applied to a number of photonic applications, especially fiber-chip packages. Based on the fabricated adiabatic OFT structures, the optical transmission to the inversely tapered silicon waveguide shows large spatial-dimensional tolerances for 1 dB excess loss of ~60 ㎛ (silicon waveguide angle of 1°) and insertion loss of less than 0.4 dB (silicon waveguide angle of 4°), from the numerical simulation. The proposed adiabatic coupler shows the ultrabroadband coupling efficiency over the O- and C-bands.

  • We have demonstrated a refractometer for liquid based on a side-polished fiber. The device consists of a side-polished single mode fiber and a rectangular space which plays a role of the multimode planar waveguide when it is infused with a liquid. We presented a simple method to acquire the refractive index of a liquid by use of the spacings of periodic resonance wavelengths of the device. The resolution of the fabricated refractometer was order of $10^{-5}$

  • In this paper, a method to eliminate the polarization dependent properties of fiber-to-planar waveguide couplers using a thin half-waveplate is proposed and demonstrated. The operation principle of the device is explained and the fabrication technology is presented. It is experimentally shown that the resonance wavelengths of the device are independent of the polarization state of input light.

  • Side-polished single-mode fiber covered with a thick planar-glass-waveguide is studied as a polarization-insensitive fiber-optic refractometer The properties of the device are very sensitive to the index variation of an upper cladding on top of the overlay waveguide. We investigate the spectral response, the polarization properties, and the relationship between the shift in coupling wavelength and the index variation of an upper cladding layer Index resolutions of the order of 10-4 have been achieved.

  • Guide modes in a graded index multinmode optical fiber are turned into clad modes when the optical fiber was bended into a perpendicular direction to its optical axes by microbending forces, which causes the loss of the guiding optical power. The theories reported on this microbending power loss can be applied to calculation of the transmission power loss only when the beding period equals to the mode coupling length. In this paper, we obtained the general expression of the optical power transmission loss in a graded index multimode fiber bended periodically. This can be applied to the calculation of the power loss of the periodically microbended fiber with an arbitrary bending shape and period. Also, by using the beam theory in mechanics, we could derive the expression of the displacement of the optical fiber caused by the external force which bends the fiber into a periodic trapezoidal shape. Experiments were carried out to determine the dependence of the power loss on the period of the microbending forces. Experimnetal results were in good agreement (in the same order of the magnitude) with theoritical values derived in our work within the bending period region of 2mm-10mm.

  • A metal capillary splice fiber-optic sensor was fabricated for use as an intensity-based macro-bending sensor. As the radius of curvature due to the macro-bending decreases, the angular misalignment of the fiber ends inside the metal capillary increases, i.e., the coupling efficiency of the fiber splice is reduced. Thus, macro-bending can be detected by the measurement of the reduction of transmitted power. The detectable range of macro-bending. was measured approximately from 20 mm to 85 mm. The center wavelengths of the fiber Bragg gratings are 1543.3 nm and 1549.5 nm, respectively. The maximum bending loss of this sensor was measured about -11.92 dB. Using this metal capillary spliced fiber sensor and fiber Bragg gratings, macro-bending detection has been demonstrated, and it is shown to have potential for multi-point macro-bending sensors. nsors.

  • Stimulated Brillouin scattering theory is described in an optical fiber. Frequency change with an optical heterodyne method is analyzed between reference signal of a source and stimulated Brillouin scattering signal in an optical fiber. By coupling a source with a few axial modes and an optical fiber ring resonator, Brillouin scattering is studied with a spectrum analyzer. Using reference beating signal of a source, we have reduced the Brillouin beating frequency from 13 GHz range to below GHz. Experimentally, we can see the Brillouin beating frequency from 13 GHz range to below GHz with a dispersion shifted fiber (1.32 GHz), Ti-doped fiber (900 MHz) and single mode optical fiber (870 MHz). • A multi-purpose environmental monitoring system has been developed as a commercially available standard using the technique of hetero-core spliced fiber optic sensors, for the purposes of monitoring large-scale structures and preserving natural environments. The monitoring system has been tested and evaluated in a possible outdoor condition, in view of the full-scale operation at actual sites to be monitored. Additionally, the developed system in this work conveniently provides us with various options of sensor modules intended for monitoring such physical quantities as displacement, distortion, pressure, binary states, and liquid adhesion. Two channels of optical fiber line were monitored in each channel, three displacement sensor modules were connected in series, in order to examine the performance to a pseudo-cracking experiment in the outdoor situation and to clarify temperature influences an the system, in terms of the coupling of optical connectors and the OTDR stability. The results from the pseudo-cracking experiment agreed with the actual cracks, by means of calculation, based an the detected displacement values and their geometrical arrangement of the used sensor modules. The temperature change, ranging from 10 to $20^{\circ}C$ resulting from the 10-days free running operation, was found to influence the system stability of ${\pm}10{\mu}m$, primarily due to the coupling instability of the used optical connectors. It was found that fusion splicing, rather than the use of connectors, reduced the fluctuation dawn to ${\pm}2{\mu}m$. The specification and performance of various option modules have been demonstrated to show the capability of inspecting various physical quantities by use of the single system, which would be suitable for multi-purpose environmental monitoring.

  • In this paper, we proposed a simple measurement method to find the behaviors of the fiber-to-waveguide coupler. The polished fiber blocks and planar waveguides on silicon dioxide were fabricated independently and then optically coupled by physical pressure. Several kinds of polymer with different refractive indices were used for waveguide films. The proposed method makes it possible to measure the center wavelength, bandwidth, extinction ratio, and polarization dependence of the coupler during fabrication procedure. The wavelength sensitivity increased with refractive index of polymer. The symmetric planar waveguide structure and isotropic property of guiding materials reduced polarization dependent property. Insertion loss of the coupler was less than 0.5dB. It is expected that our measurement method is useful for developing various optical devices using evanescent coupling between polished fiber and planar waveguide such as optical modulators and filters etc.
