  • Native corn starch and montmorillonite caly nanocomposites were prepared using the glycerol as the plasticizer. These were characterized by mechanical analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. The tensile strength increased with the clay content to a maximum point and then decreased due to gapping between the two phases. Dispersion of the layered silicate within the starch was verified using X-ray diffraction pattern. Examination of these materials by scanning electron showed that intercalates have good wetting to the starch surface.

  • Geosynthetic Reinforcements - membrane drawn type, warp/knitted type, junction bonded type and composite type geogrids, strip type reinforcement - were used to compare the long-term perfor-mance by total factor of safety with reduction factors during service periods. To evaluate the reduction factors, wide-width tensile property, installation damage, creep deformation, chemical and biological degradation tests were performed. Long-term design strengths of geosynthetic reinforcements were calculated by using GRI standard Test Method GG4.

  • Addition of steel fiber to shotcrete is to improve the brittleness of concrete. Quality of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete can be evaluated by quantitive analysis of toughness characteristics after cracking. The toughness characteristics can be expressed by absolute value of energy absorption capacity, non-dimensional toughness index related to the energy absorption capacity, and equivalent flexural strength at arbitrary deflection. In this study, merits and demerits of flexural toughness by RTA round panel of Australia and other specifications have been analyzed.

  • Axisymmetric flows in an optical fiber coating applicator were computed by using structured finite volume solver FLUENT. The numerical computations were performed for various draw speeds from 900m/min to 1,200m/min. The physical phenomena in the coating applicator is the main topic of this paper. The results of the simulations covering streamline, pressure, temperature, and fluid-fluid interface are shown in this paper.
