  • This study presents an experimental technique to monitor the dynamic behavior of the railway bridge system simultaneously using multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The measuring quantities include stains, curvatures, vertical deflections, and vertical accelerations. The strains are directly measured from multiplexed FBG sensors at various locations of the test bridge followed by curvature calculations based on the plane section assumption. Vertical deflections are then estimated using the Bernoulli beam theory and regression analysis. Finally, vertical accelerations are obtained from the numerical differentiation in time domain. In order to verify the proposed method, several conventional electric strain gauges, displacement transducers, and accelerometers are installed at the mid-span of the bridge for comparisons. A test train is passed over the bridge to monitor the dynamic response of the bridge. The monitoring results show that the multiplexed FBG sensing system is able to capture the essential behavior of the test bridge while resolving wiring problem in practice.

  • Bradykinin receptor B2, a GPCR protein, binds with the inflammatory mediator hormone bradkynin. It plays an important role in cross-talk between the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the kinin-kallikrein system (KKS). Also, it is involved in many processes including vasodilation, edema, smooth muscle spasm and pain fiber stimulation. Hence, studuying the structural features of the receptor becomes important. But the unavailability of the three dimensional structure of the protein makes the analysis difficult. Hence we have performed the homology modelling of Bradykinin receptor B2 with 5 different templates. 25 different homology models were constructed. Two best models were selected based on the model validation. The developed models could be helpful in analysing the structural features of Bradykinin receptor B2 and in pathophysiology of various disorders related to them.

  • WDM(wavelength-division multiplexing) 광통신 네트웍을 이루는 핵심기술중의 하나는 ADF(Add-drop Filter)의 구현에 있다. • In this paper, we propose a new tunable laser diode structure. The laser diode consists of a sampled-grating distributed feedback laser diode monolithically integrated with a sampled-grating distributed-Brags-Reflector. For a specific design, the possibility of continuous/discrete wavelength tuning over 27nm is confirmed by a numerical analysis using a split-step time domain model. Because the laser diode can be directly coupled with optical fiber without the intervention of the passive section, the laser diode exhibits higher output power than the conventional laser diode.

  • In this paper, we report the characteristics of the continuous wave laser output of the $lima{\varsigma}on$-shaped InGaAsP microcavity laser pumped by current injection. In order to find the directions of emission far-field patterns are measureed by rotating an optical fiber around the microcavity. We observe high directionality of the $lima{\varsigma}on$-shaped microcavity laser. For the analysis of lasing properties we also investigate its polarization and spectrum using the Glan-Thompson polarizer and spectrum analyzer.

  • Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography/headspace techniques(HS) and flame ionization detection (GC/FID) have been combined for determination of very polar compounds in water, including the widely used gasoline oxygenates and by-products. A relatively simple extraction method using a CAR/PDMS(75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) SPME fiber was optimized for the routine analysis of gasoline oxygenates and by-products in groundwater and reagent water. A sodium chloride concentration of 25%(w/w) combined with an extraction time of 20 min provided the greatest sensitivity while maintaining analytical efficiency Replicate analyses in fortified reagent and groundwater spiked with microgram per liter concentrations of gasoline oxygenates and by-products indicate quantitative and reproducible recovery of these and related oxygenate compounds. Method dynamic range was 50$\mu\textrm{g}$ L-1 to 3000$\mu\textrm{g}$ L-1 for gasoline oxygenates and by-products.

  • The surfaces of sheets added with N-chloro-polyacrylamide (N-Cl-PAM) are analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to clarify the chemical bonding involved in the paper strength development induced by N-Cl-PAM. The comparison of the observed N1s chemical shift of the sheet with those of the paper strength additives and the model compound, 1-butyryl-3-propyl urea, illustrated the presence of covalent bonds of alkyl acyl urea and urethane on the fiber surfaces. Thus the formation of the covalent bonds by N-Cl-PAM themselves and by N-Cl-PAM with cellulose and hemicellulose may be an explanation for much higher effectiveness of N-Cl-PAM on the improvement of wet strength of paper than A-PAM.

  • A kind of image analysis system is used to investigate the structural features of the traditional handmade papers made from Kenaf and Abutilon. The screen mark on the paper was identified and analyzed. The dusts, shives and fiber bundles were manifested and calculated. The relationship between basis weight of the traditional paper and mean gray level of the image was discussed in detail. Some methods to express the formation of traditional handmade paper were studied.

  • This study was to measure the potential of nonwoody fibrous material, kenaf. Whole stalk of kenaf, Hibiscus cannabinus was separated by two parts of bast and core portion, and cooked separately by alkaline method. Morphological characteristic was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and fiber quality analyzer(FQA). The strength properties of handsheets, made by different mixing ration between kenaf base and core fibers, were measured. Cross-sectional area of bast fibers was smaller than that of core fibers, but the bast fibers had a thick cell wall and narrow lumen area. Bast fibers were longer in length than core fibers. Core fibers had thin cell walls, broad lumen areas, and short lengths, and they had collapsed shape even in water. These characteristics of core fibers affected strength properties of handsheet positively. When the amount of core fibers increased, the strength properties of handsheet were increased. When the amount of bast fibers increased, the handsheet had rougher surface and higher air permeability.

  • A new test method has been developed for a quantitative evaluation of macro-stickies in recycled pulps. The method uses a fine slot screen to separate a sticky particles form fiber in the pulp samples. The obtained sticky particles were spread on filter paper and covered with silicon carbide powder in order to make the stickies area with sufficient contrast between stickies and background. The stickies are then counted by a scanner-based image analysis system. The validity of this evaluation method of stickies of KOCC, ONP and white ledger wastepaper recycling plants respectively. It is shown that this method can be applied for a quantitative determination of stickies content in various recycled pulp samples. With this testing method, reproducible and reliable data were obtained for the actual mill pulp samples.
