  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of diet on the nutritional status and constipation rate of female college students. A total of 251 female college students living in Gyeonggi province participated in this study. Dietary intake was ascertained from a 3-day dietary record, including 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day. Anthropometrics, general characteristics, diet experiences, dietary habits and prevalence of constipation were analyzed using a questionnaire. The subjects were divided into two groups, a control group (n=165, 46.2%) and a diet group (n=135, 53.8%). There was no significant difference in age, height, weight or BMI between groups. The prevalence of constipation was higher in the diet group than the control group. The intakes of energy, dietary fiber and water of the diet group were significantly lower than those of the control group. Correlation analysis revealed that the prevalence of constipation was negatively associated with exercise score, dietary fiber intake and water intake. It is postulated that dietary habits might be important factors contributing to constipation. Accordingly, nutrition education aimed to improve intakes of fiber and water may be necessary during weight control periods.

  • Ultra-High-Performance Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (SUPER Concrete) exhibits improved compressive and tensile strengths far superior to those of conventional concrete. These characteristics can significantly reduce the cross sectional area of the member and the anchorage strength of a headed bar is expected to be improved. In this study, the anchorage strengths of headed bars with $4d_b$ or $6d_b$ embedment length were evaluated by simulated exterior beam-column joint tests where the headed bars were used as beam bars and the joints were cast of 120 or 180 MPa SUPER Concrete. In all specimens, the actual yield strengths of the headed bars over 600 MPa were developed. Some headed bars were fractured due to the high anchorage capacity in SUPER Concrete. Therefore, the headed bar with only $4d_b$ embedment length in 120 MPa SUPER Concrete can develop a yield strength of 600 MPa which is the highest design yield strength permitted by the KCI design code. The previous model derived from tests with normal concrete and the current design code underestimate the anchorage capacity of the headed bar anchored in SUPER Concrete. Because the previous model and the current design code do not consider the effects of the high tensile strength of SUPER Concrete. From a regression analysis assuming that the anchorage strength is proportional to $(f_{ck})^{\alpha}$, the model for predicting anchorage strength of headed bars in SUPER Concrete is developed. The average and coefficient of variation of the test-to-prediction values are 1.01 and 5%, respectively.

  • Electro-optical sigma-delta modulators are the core module of digital receiver to digitize wideband radio-frequency signals directly at an antenna. Electro-optical sigma-delta modulators use a pulsed laser to oversample an input radio-frequency signals at two Mach-Zehnder Interferometer(MZI) and shape the quantization noise using a fiber-lattice accumulator. Decimation filtering is applied to the quantizer output to construct the input signal with high resolution. The jitter affects greatly on reconstructing the original input signal of modulator. This paper analyzes the performance of first order single bit electro-optical sigma-delta modulator in the time domain and the frequency domain. The performance of modulator is analyzed by using asynchronous spectral averaging of the reconstructed signal's spectrum in the frequency domain. The reference value of time jitter is presented by analyzing the performance of jitter effects. This kind of jitter value can be used as a reference value on the design of modulators.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the possibility of using Pueraria flos as natural health food source. To accomplish this purpose, the contents of general and antioxidative nutrients of Pueraria flos a were measured. The contents of carbohydrate, crude protein, crude lipid and ash were 69.2%, 19.9%, 2.2% and 8.9%, respectively, and calories was 340.4 kcal. Total dietary fiber was 85.1% of total carbohydrates. The percentages of water soluble dietary fiber to insoluble dietary fiber were 12.0% and 46.7%, respectively. The protein contained 18 different kinds of amino acids. The contents of essential and non-essential amino acids were 5.0 g and 6.7 g. The Ca was the largest mineral followed by K, Mg, and P, which means Pueraria flos is alkali material. The contents of saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids were 25.37%, 33.61% and 35.68%, respectively. Therefore, the amount of the total unsaturated fatty acid was higher than that of any other plant. The antioxidant activity of 70% ethanol extract and fractions of the Pueraria flos has been determined by the scavenging of the stable radical DPPH; the result showed that the ethyl acetate fraction was the most active, as the amount required for 50% reduction of DPPH after 30 mins ($RC_{50}$) was 109.9 ${\mu}g$, followed by 70% ethanol extract (217.3 ${\mu}g$), hexane fraction (134.5 ${\mu}g$), chloroform (116.7 ${\mu}g$), butanol faction (129.8 ${\mu}g$) and aqueous fraction (473.5 ${\mu}g$).

  • Reliability in tunnel analysis is necessary to accomplish technically sound design and economical construction. For this, a thorough understanding of the construction procedure including the ground-support interaction has to be obtained. This paper describes a proper modelling technique to simulate the behavior of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) which maintain the supporting capability in post-failure regime. The additional supporting effect of the steel support was also verified by 3-D analyses and a new load distribution factor were proposed. The use of the plastic moment limit (PML) alone can eliminate the occurrence of the awkwardly high tensile stress in the shotcrete and can successfully model the post-peak ductile behavior of the SFRS. But with this method, moment is limited whenever the stress caused by moment reaches tensile strength of the shotcrete irrespective of the stress by axial force. Therefore, it was necessary to find a more comprehensive method which can reflect the influence of the moment and axial force. This can be accomplished by the proper use of "liner element" which is the built-in model in FLAC. In this model, the peak and residual strength as well as the uniaxial compressive strength of the SFRS can be specified. Analyses were conducted with these two models on the 2-lane road tunnels excavated in class IV and V rock mass and results were compared with the conventional elastic beam model. Results showed that both models can reflect the fracture toughness of the SFRS which could not be accomplished by the elastic beam model.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate chemical composition, nitrogen-corrected true metabolizable energy (TMEn) and true amino acids digestibility of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) produced in China. Twenty five sources of corn DDGS was collected from 8 provinces of China. A precision-fed rooster assay was used to determine TMEn and amino acids digestibility with 35 adult cecectomized roosters, in which each DDGS sample was tube fed (30 g). The average content of ash, crude protein, total amino acid, ether extract, crude fiber and neutral detergent fiber were 4.81, 27.91, 22.51, 15.22, 6.35 and 37.58%, respectively. TMEn of DDGS ranged from 1,779 to 3,071 kcal/kg and averaged 2,517 kcal/kg. Coefficient of variation for non-amino acid crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber and TMEn were 55.0, 15.7, 15.9 and 17.1%, respectively. The average true amino acid digestibility was 77.32%. Stepwise regression analysis obtained the following equation: TMEn, kcal/kg = -2,995.6+0.88${\times}$gross energy+$49.63{\times}a^*$ (BIC = 248.8; RMSE = 190.8; p<0.01). Removing gross energy from the model obtained the following equation: TMEn, kcal/kg = 57.88${\times}$ether extracts+$87.62{\times}a^*$ (BIC = 254.3, RMSE = 223.5; p<0.01). No correlation was found between color scores and lysine true digestibility (p>0.05). These results suggest that corn DDGS produced in China has a large variation in chemical composition, and gross energy and $a^*$ value can be used to generate TMEn predict equation.

  • We examined the nutritive value of common grass species in the semi-arid rangelands of Borana in southern Ethiopia using local experience based herbage preference (LEBHP) perception and laboratory techniques. Local pastoralists in the study area were asked to identify common grass species and rank them according to the species' preferences and palatability to cattle. The pastoralists listed a total of 15 common grass species which were then sampled during the main rain and cold dry seasons and analyzed for crude protein (CP), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) and ash content to verify pastoralists' claim regarding the quality of individual species. The relative feed value (RFV) and dry matter digestibility (DMD) were also calculated using NDF and ADF contents. Spearman's rank correlation was used to examine possible relationships between laboratory results and pastoralists' experience on grass quality. Cenchrus ciliaris, Chrysopogon aucheri, Digitaria milanjiana, Eragrostis papposa and Panicum maximum were the top five species based on LEBHP perception. There were indications of inconsistency in terms of LEBHP perception among the different pastoral communities. The chemical composition of all grass species showed significant (p<0.05) variation between sites, seasons and species. The results showed that the CP values for the Borana rangelands were in the range of 8.7% in the main rain season to 5.1% for the cold dry season. The fiber constituents were relatively low in the main rain season compared to the cold dry season. Overall, Digitaria milanjiana had the highest CP (16.5%) content, while the least was recorded with Heteropogon contortus (10.8) and Aristida adoensis (9.8%) during the main rain season. It seems that the spatial variability of landscapes within the wider geographical regions, soil properties and texture, and land-use patterns probably contributed to site differences in species quality. Generally, the RFV of individual grass species was significantly (p<0.05) varied between and within sites. The ranking of species by pastoralists according to their preferences by cattle was highly correlated with the chemical composition of laboratory results of individual grass species with 'r' values for CP (0.94), ash (0.95), NDF (-0.98), ADF (-0.93) and ADL (-0.93). We suggest the complimentary use of LEBHP and laboratory techniques in evaluating the nutritive quality of rangeland forage species for sustainable animal production.

  • To increase specific surface property of activated carbon fiber(ACF), chemical activation(CA) using alkali metals and surface treatment(ST) using oxidant was widely used. The CA and ST process developed micro-pore on the surface of ACF by chemical reaction of the alkali metals and oxidative of oxidant, respectively. To improve the efficiency of CA process for developing micro-pores on the surface of ACF, the ST process was adopted as an pre-treatment method. After treatment of ST process, ACF properties was investigated depending on the ST pre-treatment process. FT-IR, TG and elemental analysis of the ACF are carried out, and an adsorption property of ACF was also evaluated using toluene(which in typical volatile organic matter). Once the single CA process is used, the surface area and adsorption capacity of ACF were increased from 1,483 to 1,988 $m^2/g$ and from 0.22 to 0.27 $g_{-Tol.}/g_{-ACF}$, respectively. On the other hands, once the ST and CA processes are used successively, the surface area and adsorption capacity of ACF are greatly increase(where the surface area is 2,743 $m^2/g$ and the adsorption capacity is 0.37 $g_{-Tol.}/g_{-ACF}$). It indicates that the combined process of ST and CA can improve the surface process properties of ACF.

  • Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) is an annual herbaceous plant of the family Malvacease that has been planted in tropical Africa and Asia region for more than 4000 years and use as source of fiber, energy and feed stock. In this study, the physiological characters and chemical compositions of kenaf mutant variety "Jangdae" developed using gamma irradiation at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) were compared with three genetic resources (Auxu, C12, and C14-DRS). Jangdae showed the highest productivity growth rates in fresh yield, dry weight (DW) yield (leaf and stem), node number, and stem thickness. Especially, leaf DW yield of Jangdae was 1.6-3.1 times higher than that of three genetic resources. Also, stem DW yield of Jangdae was 1.6-2.1 times higher than that of three genetic resources. In the analysis of chemical composition, Jangdae showed 16.9% of crude protein content that was 0.86-0.94 times lower than three cultivars. However, Jangdae showed the highest neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents in leaf (32.5%) and stem (75.2%). Also, acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents of stem and leaf in Jangdae were 64.4% and 33.9%, respectively. Total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents were 22.1 mg/g and 7.4 mg/g in Jangdae. Based on these results, Jangdae would have the potential to become a successful forage crop.

  • We have discussed on the structural transition and its effect on the electrical property of Li-GFDICs and Li-PCDICs occuring during the deintercalation process of Li-Graphite Fiber Intercalation Compounds(Li-GFICs) and Li-Petroleum Cokes Intercalation Compounds(Li-PCDICs) synthesized under pressure and temperature by spontaneous oxidation by air circulation. The analytical results were obtained by X-ray diffraction and electrical specific resistivity measurements. According to X-ray analysis, we have found that the major stage of Li-GFICs was stage 2 and those of Li-PCICs were stage 1 and stage 2, respectively. And from this results of the deintercalation process, we have found that the deintercalation process did not occur any more after 5th week of Li-GFDICs and after 3rd week of Li-PCDICs. According to the results of the electrical specific resistivity measurements, Li-GFDICs showed little variation to 3rd week and rising in the steady curve after 4th week, while Li-PCDICs showed a rising in the steady curve to 3rd week and a declining curve after 3rd week. Therefore from these results, we can consider that graphite fiber and petroleum cokes as a substrate can be also used as an anode material of battery because they have good intercalation-deintercalation reactivity with lithium.
