  • With a purpose of finding out the effects of phosphatic fertilizer application at the grassland establishment and management on the botanical composition, mineral content of grasses and the chemical properties of soil. a field experiment was arranged with four treatments as a randomized complete block design and lasted from September, 1989 to October, 1991 in hilly area near Suweon. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The botanical composition of grassland that phosphatic fertilizer was not applied was poor and the rate of legumes was increased with phosphatic fertilizer application and the effect of phosphatic fertilizer applications was obvious at the grassland management. 2. The mineral contents, N. P, Ca, Mg of grasses were increased with phosphatic fertilizer application but the K/Ca+Mg equivalent ratio of grasses was lowered and K content and Ca/P ratio tended not to be regular. 3. The available phosphorus contents and exchangable cation, Ca, Mg, contents of grassland soil were increased with phosphatic fertilizer applications but potasium contents tended not to be regular. 4. It was necessary to apply phosphatic fertilizer for the establishment and management of grassland. The botanical composition of grassland that phosphatic fertilizer was not applied at the establishment could be corrected into good stand with continuous phosphatic fertilizer applications at the management.

  • Environmental toxicity due to cadmium (Cd) pollution in croplands causes critical problems worldwide. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important crop in Asia, including South Korea, and numerous studies have evaluated the relationship between Cd and antioxidants to alleviate Cd uptake from the soil into plants. However, information about the relationship between phosphorus (P) and antioxidants in rice seedlings is still limited with regard to Cd phytotoxicity. We therefore investigated the physiological responses of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv 'Dongjin') seedlings to Cd toxicity and the effect of P application on reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant changes. The exposure of rice seedlings to $30{\mu}M$ Cd inhibited plant growth; increased the contents of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde; and induced Cd uptake by the roots and leaves. Application of P to Cd-exposed seedlings decreased Cd-induced oxidative stress by enhancing the capacity of ascorbate (AsA) production and ROS-scavenging, and decreased Cd transfer from the roots to the leaves. These results suggest that P application alleviated Cd-induced growth inhibition and oxidative damage by restricting Cd translocation from the roots to the leaves and maintaining sufficient levels of AsA.

  • To find out the optimum fertilizer level for high yielding variety, Velox, experiment was conducted with 15 compositions of fertilizer levels at the experiment field of forage crop in Sunchon National University from Mar. 2000 to Aug. 2000. The effects of nitrogen fertilizer on plant growth were significant but increasing rate of application in potassium and phosphate fertilizers above 6 kg/a had negligible effects on plant growth. The optimum nitrogen application level of fertilizers turned out to be 16-6-6 kg/l0a of N-P$_2$O$_{5}$-K$_{5}$O. Content of crude protein was highest and that of crude fiber such as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin were lowest at this rate of fertilizer application. Furthermore, IVDMD was high and dry matter yield were highest at the optimum raterate

  • Timing and placement of fertilizer applications are two managerial means to improve the fertilizer use efficiency. The relative importance of these two means is determined by the application rate. With the realistic rate of N application recommended to the small farmers in the tropics, at present and in the near future, basal application in right manner, seems to be more important than split application at different times. In wetland rice soils, deep placement by whatever available means is desirable. But in the situations where perfect deep placement is very difficult to implement, the whole-layer application may be worth trying, until better methods become available. In rainfed uplands, N fertilizer application plans should be contingent upon the amount and distribution of rainfall: apply a less risky rate as subsurface banding near the crop rows to start with; then, depending upon the rainfall prospects in the season, apply or omit the additional dose. Because the patterns of crop response to N fertilizer can be significantly different between the research farms and farmers' fields, it seems imperative to have information on the patterns of crop response to N under farmers' management conditions, for the development of realistic fertilizer application recommendations. To enable the farmers to adopt improved fertilizer application technologies, it is essential to develop and make available to farmers convenient fertilizer applicators. Past experience with the improved fertilizer use technologies indicates that, in the long run, the development of fertilizers that are not only effective and convenient for farmers to use but also easy to produce without major modifications of existing fertilizer production systems is the ultimate solution to the problem of low N fertilizer use efficiency.

  • A study was carried out to investigate the effect of application time of fertilizer nitrogen on its rate of uptake and its distribution in rice plant. The rate of applied fertilizer was 100kg/ha, as a single application at transplanting time and four equal split applications of 25kg/ha was applied at transplanting time, 3 weeks after transplanting, 1 week before the primodial initiation stage of growth and at the flag leaf stage of growth, respectively. The ammonium sulfate was labelled with N-15, as 1% atom excess for single application and 4.4% atom excess for split applications. The results are sumarized as follows: 1. The effect of split application of nitrogen on yield was observed. The yield of brown rice of the single application at transplanting time was 3.1 ton/ha and the split application was 3.4 ton/ha. However, without nitrogen the yield was reduced to 1.9 ton/ha. 2. The number of grains per panicle and 1000 grains weight were increased as split application of nitrogen, but for the number of panicles per hill and maturing rate, the single application of nitrogen revealed favorable results. 3. The rate of uptake of applied fertilizer nitrogen showed a tendency that the efficiency of fertilizer nitrogen increased by top dressing. The rate of uptake of applied nitrogen as basal application, first top dressing, second top dressing and third top dressing was 28%, 33% 51% and 63%, respectively. 4. After shooting stage of the growth, nitrogen in straws transfered to grains. The nitrogen applied at flag leaf stage was absorbed by root and easily accumulated in grains rather than straw.

  • In order to investigate the treatment efficiency of pollutants in free water surface constructed wetlands (FWS CWs) with lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) cultivation pond, the experiment was consisted of two sites (site I and II) in Lake Juam, Korea. The sites were configured a lotus cultivation pond (with fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site I, and a lotus cultivation pond (without fertilizer application) - a dropwort bed - a reed bed for site II. Removal rate of COD in site I and II were 13.3% and 26.0%, respectively. Removal rate of total nitrogen (TN) was 29.7% for site I, and 36.3% for site II. Removal rate of total phosphorus (TP) in site I and II were 36.0% and 36.5%, respectively. COD, TN and TP in effluent from site I (with fertilizer) was higher than that in site II (without fertilizer), showing that COD, TN and TP in effluent were strongly influenced by fertilizer addition. Therefore, in order to satisfy established water-quality standards, the amount of fertilizer used in lotus cultivation showed be evaluated.

  • The objectives of this study were to monitor the changes in soil solution nutrients and to evaluate their effect on rice uptake and yield. The changes of chemical characteristics of paddy soil solution were examined from the 58th fertilization experiment in which the continuous rice cropping experiment started in 1954 at the National Academy of Agricultural Science. The treatments were no fertilization (No fert.), inorganic fertilization (NPK), inorganic fertilizer plus rice straw compost (NPKC) and inorganic fertilizer plus silicate and lime fertilizer as a soil amendment (NPKCLS). The fertilizers were added at rates of standard fertilizer application rate in which nitrogen (N), phosphate ($P_2O_5$), potassium ($K_2O$), and sililcate ($SiO_2$) were applied at rates of $75{\sim}150kg\;ha^{-1}$, $70{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, $75{\sim}86kg\;ha^{-1}$, and $7.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ respectively and lime was applied to neutralize soil acidity until 6.5. Average Electrical Conductivity (EC) of soil solution in NPKCLS and NPKC ranged from 1.16 to $2.00dS\;m^{-1}$. The $NH{_4}^+$ and $K^+$ levels in NPKCLS and NPKC were higher than that of the other treatments, due to high supply power of rice straw compost. The content of $H_3SiO{_4}^-$ was higher in NPKCLS because of silicate application. The dominant ions in soil solution were $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ among cations and $HCO{_3}^-$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, and $Cl^-$ among anions in all treatments. The continuous application of inorganic fertilizers plus rice straw compost (NPKC) and silicate fertilizer (NPKCLS) led to the changes of various chemical composition in soil solutions. Also, they had a significant impact on the improvement of rice inorganic uptake and grain yield. Especially, inorganic uptake by rice in NPKC and NPKCLS significantly increased than those in NPK plot; 14~46% for T-N, 32~36% for P, 43~57% for K, and 45~77% for Si. Therefore, the combined application of inorganic fertilizers with organic compost as a soil amendment is considered as the best fertilization practice in the continuous rice cropping for the improvement of crop productivity and soil fertility.

  • The importance of environment-friendly agriculture is being magnified as a new growth engine industry in pursuit of low carbon, green growth policies. In order to provide technical supports for pushing ahead with the environment-friendly agriculture policies, we estimated the effects of customized fertilization on growth and yield of rice and fertilizer reduction compared to conventional fertilization and single-element fertilization. In rice plant growth and rice yield, no statistically significant difference between the three fertilization treatments was observed. In contrast, customized fertilization showed high disaster resistance reducing the damage caused by rice lodging during a typhoon. The average N application in farms showing high rice lodging amounted to $135kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ while $135-138kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ was known as the critical range of rice lodging in Korea. The fertilizer reduction rate of customized fertilization compared to conventional fertilization of investigated farms was on average 22.5%. We estimated the short-term effects of customized fertilization in the first year after application. In future, there is need for continuous examination of rice growth and soil environment change due to successive application of customized fertilizer.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the replaceability of chemical fertilizer by SCB liquid fertilizer (SCB) in pear orchard for 5 years. The effects on the mineral content of leaf, fruit quality, yield and soil chemical properties are as follows: The mineral content of leaf showed no difference between the treatments; two SCB liquid fertilizer treatments based on the N (SCB-N) and K (SCB-K) content, and control (chemical fertilizer application). There were no significant differences in yield, titratable acidity and weight of the fruit although the figure of fruit weight was high in SCB-N treatment. Soluble solids content was higher in the SCB treatments than the control. Soil chemical properties such as the content of soil organic matter, available soil phosphate and exchangeable cation were not different, although soil pH was higher in SCB treatments. In conclusion, it is suggest that the use of chemical fertilizer in pear orchard could be replaced by the application of SCB liquid fertilizer because of the same effect on the growth of pear tree and soil chemical properties.
