To investigate antioxidant effects of tea tree root extracts using various extraction methods, cytotoxicity, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging, SOD, nitrite scavenging activity and inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation, reducing power, ferrous ion chelating activity were measured. Cytotoxicity for RAW 264.7 cells was not observed at concentrations treated with below 90 ㎍/mL in all extracts. The maximum DPPH radical, nitrite scavenging, SOD activity and inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation were obtained at the ethylacetate and 70% ethanol extract. The maximum ABTS radical scavenging activity was obtained at the ethylacetate and hot water extract. However, in the case of reducing power and ferrous ion chelating activity, they were obtained at 70% ethanol and hexane extract, respectively. Nitrate scavenging activity showed the most excellent scavenging ability of 59.6% at 90 ㎍/mL of ethylacetate. The hexane extract had the highest ferrous ion chelating activity, showing 61.05% at 50 ㎍/mL, 66.07% at 70 ㎍/mL and 76.81% at 90 ㎍/mL, respectively. The results of this research show that the ethylacetate and 70% ethanol extracts of tea tree root can be used as a natural material for scavenging the radicals. However, future study is necessary to understand the mechanism of antioxidant activity by identification of substances.

In this study, n-butanol and ethyl acetate extracts were prepared from raw yam (Dioscorea batatas DECNE.). Their antioxidative potencies were investigated employing various in vitro methods, such as ferrous ion chelating, ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay, lipid peroxidation inhibition and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging and nitrite scavenging activity. The n-butanol fraction was assayed to possess stronger antioxidant activity by ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay, lipid peroxidation inhibition and NO radical scavenging activity. However, ethyl acetate extract was more effective in chelating ferrous ion and scavenging nitrite. Based on the results obtained, yam is a potential active ingredient that could be applied in antioxidation as well as bio-health functional food to take a good part in prevention of human diseases and aging.
This study aims to evaluate the antioxidative activities of cow-milk kefir and goat-milk kefir. Antioxidative mechanisms, including radical-scavenging effects, ferrous-ion chelating ability, reducing power and antioxidant activity, were investigated herein. Kefirs demonstrated significantly greater scavenging effects upon 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide radicals, an inhibition effect upon linoleic-acid peroxidation, and more substantial reducing power, but reduced glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity than was the case for milks. There was no significant difference between milks and kefirs as regards ferrous-ion chelating ability and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. These findings have demonstrated that kefirs possess antioxidant activity, thereby suggesting that kefirs are potential candidates for the role of useful natural antioxidant supplements for the human diet.
The present study were conducted to determine physiological activities and antioxidant effects [2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, reducing power, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) and Fe2+ (ferrous ion) chelating capacity] of 70% methanol, chloroform:methanol, 2:1 volume ratio (CM) and ethyl acetate extract of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). Bioactive compound of tannin $0.125{\pm}0.007mg$ Catechin Equivalent (CE)/g dry weight. Turmeric extracts yield were 70% methanol 16.54%, CM 5.64% and ethyl acetate 4.14%, respectively. Antioxidant activity of the samples exhibited a dose-dependent increase. Results showed that extraction solvent had significant effects on total flavonoid content and antioxidant effects of ethyl acetate. But ferrous ion-chelating capacity of 70% methanol extract was higher than CM and ethyl acetate extract. From the results of this study, turmeric can be utilized as a valuable and potential nutraceutical for the functional food industry.
Flowers and shoots of three species of Dendranthema boreale, Dendranthema indicum, Dendranthema zawdskii var. lucidum, were extracted with 80% ethanol by reflux, and polyphenol content, scavenging activity on DPPH and ABTS radicals, ferrous ion chelating effects and inhibition effects on lipid peroxidation were analyzed. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were highest in D. zawdskii var. lucidum, especially in the flower part. Scavenging activity on DPPH and ABTS was also highest in D. zawdskii var. lucidum flower with less activity in shoot. Ferrous ion chelating effects was highest with D. boreale flower and lowest in D. zawdskii var. lucidum flower. Inhibition activity on lipid peroxidation was highest in D. zawdskii var. lucidum shoot with 41.01% inhibition activity showing 32 days after reaction, which is higher than synthetic antioxidant BHT. Due to higher antioxidant level and activity of shoot and flower of D. zawdskii var. lucidum is promising material for natural plant antioxidant. It was also shown that antioxidant activity is different according to plant part ever in same plant, and proper plant species should be used for antioxidant after careful studies.

To develop a natural antioxidant from three Chrysanthemum species, flower and shoot extracts of Chrysanthemum frutescens, Chrysanthemum morifolium and Chrysanthemum zawadskii ssp. naktongense were obtained and their phenolic compound contents, scavenging effects on DPPH and ABTS radicals, ferrous ion chelating effects and inhibition activity on lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid were studied. Shoots of C. morifolium showed the highest levels in all above mentioned analyses. Especially, shoot extract of C. morifolium had high scavenging activities on ABTS radicals, similar to ascorbic acid or BHT. Ferrous ion chelating effect was the lowest in a C. morifolium shoot extract, but the highest in a C. morifolium flower extract. Inhibition activity on lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid was the highest with C. frutescens and C. morifolium shoots, but activity was lower than BHT. From present study, a shoot extract of C. morifolium is demonstrated as a valuable source for the development of a natural antioxidant. However, due to its low levels of ferrous ion chelating effects and inhibition activity on lipid peroxidation, a combination of other antioxidants with C. morifolium extract is recommended for the development of a new antioxidant.

The bioactive compound and antioxidant property of Korean yam (Dioscorea batatas DECNE.) were studied using in vitro methods. Yam available in Korea was analyzed for lycopene, chlorophyll a, b, tannin, phytic acid and total saponin contents. 70% Methanol, 70% ethanol and chloroform-methanol mixture (CM, 2:1, v/v) were used to extract yam. Then the antioxidant activity evaluated through ferrous ion chelating activity, ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching method, lipid peroxidation inhibition and nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging activity. 70% Methanol extract showed the highest ferrous ion chelating activity and NO radical scavenging activity. And CM extract was the most effective in inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation evaluated by ${\beta}$-carotene bleaching assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay. Based on the results obtained, yam is a potential active ingredient that could be applied in antioxidation as well as bio-health functional food to take a good part in prevention of human diseases and aging.
The antioxidant activities and total phenolics of four Rosaceae species Pourthiaea villosa (Thunb.) Decne, Sorbus commixta Hedlund, Sorbaria sorbifolia var. stellipila Maxim and Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm.f.) Nakai were determined. Phenolic content (polyphenol and flavonoid), radical scavenging activities [2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylnezthiazoline-6-sulfoic acid) (ABTS)] and ferrous ion chelating effect were evaluated. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were highest in Pourthiaea villosa (Thunb.) Decne and lowest in Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm.f.) Nakai. Phenolic contents of Pourthiaea villosa (Thunb.) Decne was $331.45{\pm}7.78$ and $90.4{\pm}3.5mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were found to be lowest in Sorbus commixta Hedlund whereas Sorbaria sorbifolia var. stellipila Maxim and Pourthiaea villosa (Thunb.) Decne showed relatively good DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. Ferrous ion chelating effect was highest in Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm.f.) Nakai ($1.05{\pm}0.04mg{\cdot}ml^{-1}$) and lowest in Sorbus commixta Hundlund ($4.22{\pm}0.71mg{\cdot}ml^{-1}$).
Present studies were conducted to investigate the effects of autoclaving on antioxidant activities of Achillea alpina and Solodago virgurea. At early April, young leaves of 2 species were collected, subjected to autoclaving ($121^{\circ}C$, 1.2 atmospheric pressure, 15 minutes), freezed-dried, grinded, and extracted with 80% ethanol. The same process was repeated with unautoclaved control. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, scavenging activities on DPPH and ABTS radicals and ferrous ion chelating effects were analyzed. Extraction yield of autoclaved S. virgurea was 39.55% and A. alpina 28.15%. In both species, autoclaving significantly reduced scavenging activities on DPPH and ABTS radicals. On the contrary, ferrous ion chelating effects increased after autoclaving, especially in young leaves of A. alpina. Autoclaving resulted in decrease of polyphenol and flavonoid contents, especially in the A. alpina. The present experiments demonstrated that autoclaving had negative effects on antioxidant activities of A. alpina and S. virgurea, except in ferrous ion chelating effects. Young leaves of former species were unstable to heat treatment, resulting in big lose of antioxidant activity.

Present studies were conducted to investigate the effects of water and 80% ethanol solvent on antioxidant activities of flower extracts of Chrysanthemum frutescens, Coreopsis lanceolata, Matricaria recutica, and Hieracium pilosella. Extraction yields of water extracts ranged 27.15~40.25% and 80% ethanol extracts 24.92~42.84%, respectively. In all species polyphenol and flavonoid contents were higher with 80% ethanol extraction, especially in C. lanceolata. Same results were obtained with scavenging effects on DPPH and ABTS radicals and ferrous ion chelating effects. Scavenging activity of flower extracts on DPPH radicals was highest in H pilosella - higher than that of synthetic antioxidant DHT. Higher scavenging activity on ABTS radicals was observed with M. recutica. Generally Compositae flower extracts exhibited higher scavenging activity on ABTS radicals than DPPH. Scavenging activity on ABTS radicals of M. recutica and P pilosella were superior to those of ascorbic acid and BHT. Ferrous ion chelating effects were much higher with H. pilosella flower extracts by 80% ethanol. Chelating effects of 4 species were much lower than those of EDTA. In conclusion, to develop natural antioxidant from above 4 Compositae species, 80% ethanol is recommended for efficient solvent to obtain maximum antioxidant isolation and activity.
