The effect of silicon and manganese, in the ranges of 0.3% to 1.0wt% Si and 0.7 to 2.6wt%Mn, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of flux cored arc welded deposits have been investigated for the purpose of improving mechanical properties. Microstructure of weld metals was mainly influenced by manganese content, and manganese increased the volum fraction of acicular ferrite and refined the microstructure. Also, tensile properties were governed by manganese content, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were increased by approximately 82MPa and 58MPa per 1% Mn addition to the deposit. Toughness was improved by increasing Mn content and lowering Si content. Optimal impact properties were obtained at above 1.8wt% Mn and below 0.5wt% Si. Acicular ferrite was predominant factor in improving mechanical properties. Formation of acicular ferrite was promoted by manganese and no direct relationship between AF(acicular ferrite) proportion and oxygen in weld metal was found.

Loss of fracture resistance due to thermal aging degradation is a potential limiting factor affecting the long-term (80+ year) viability of nuclear reactors. To evaluate the effects of decades of aging in a practical time frame, accelerated aging must be employed prior to mechanical characterization. In this study, a variety of chemically and microstructurally diverse austenitic stainless steels were aged between 0 and 30,000 h at 290-400 ℃ to simulate 0-80+ years of operation. Over 600 static fracture tests were carried out between room temperature and 400 ℃. The results presented include selected J-R curves of each material as well as K0.2mm fracture toughness values mapped against aging condition and ferrite content in order to display any trends related to those variables. Results regarding differences in processing, optimal ferrite content under light aging, and the relationship between test temperature and Mo content were observed. Overall, it was found that both the ferrite volume fraction and molybdenum content had significant effects on thermal degradation susceptibility. It was determined that materials with >25 vol% ferrite are unlikely to be viable for 80 years, particularly if they have high Mo contents (>2 wt%), while materials less than 15 vol% ferrite are viable regardless of Mo content.
Cast austenitic stainless steel is used for several components, such as primary coolant piping, elbow, pump casing and valve bodies in light water reactors. These components are subject to thermal aging at the reactor operating temperature. Thermal aging results in spinodal decomposition of the delta-ferrite leading to increased strength and decreased toughness. This study shows that ferrite content can be predicted by use of the artificial neural network. The neural network has trained learning data of chemical components and ferrite contents using backpropagation learning process. The predicted results of the ferrite content using trained neural network are in good agreement with experimental ones.

The origin of the variation of initial permeability in manganese-zinc ferrite polycrystals with a content of hematite was investigated. Initial permeability showed maximum with hematite content while there was no significant change in microstructure. Saturation magnetization increased with hematite content. So the variation of initial permeability was not explained on the basis of microstructural change or saturation magnetization. Temperature dependence of initial permeability revealed magnetocrystalline anisotropy was the origin of the variation of initial permeability. The change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy was ascribed to the variation in ferrous ion concentration. Therefore the variation of initial permeability in manganese-zinc ferrite polycrystals with a content of hematite was due to ferrous ion concentration via magnetocrystalline anisotropy.
Cast austenitic stainless steel have been widely used for primary coolant piping in light water reactors. This material is subject to thermal embrittlement at reactor operating temperature. CF-8M and CF-8A cast austenitic stainless steel is used for several components, such as primary coolant piping, elbow, pump casing, and valve bodies in light water reactors. Thermal embrittlement results in spinodal decomposition of delta-ferrite leading to decreased fracture toughness. In this study, the specimens were prepared using an accelerated aging method. The measurement of ferrite content, Charpy impact test and J-R test were performed to verify the predicting equation for aged material properties. In case of above 25% ferrite content, predicted result of J-R curve might be non-conservative.
The effect of heat input on the content of residual .delta.-ferrite and the hot cracking susceptibility in the austenitic stainless steel overlaid on the carbon steel was studied in the range of heat input from 7.5 to 15.1 KJ/cm. Present study shows that residual .delta.-ferrite content in the overlay is mainly determined by the dilution of the base metal (carbon steel) which is in turn affected by heat input, i.e. the amount of dilution decreases as heat input increase. Accordingly, higher heat input results in a substantial increase in Cr equivalent but a little increase in Ni equivalent due to the less dilution of carbon from base metal. This fact can explain the result obtained in this study, i, e, the higher content of .delta.-ferrite in the weld deposit made with higher heat input. This in turn causes more resistant overlaying weld metal to hot cracking.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate weld metallurgical phenomena such as primary solidification mode, microstructural evolution and hot cracking susceptibility in nitrogen-bearing austenitic stainless steel GTA welds. Eight experimental heats varying nitrogen content from 0.007 to 0.23 wt.% were used in this study. Autogenous GTA welding was performed on weld coupons and the primary solidification mode and their microstructural characteristics were investigated from the fusion welds. Varestraint test was employed to evaluate the solidification cracking susceptibility of the heats and TCL(Total Crack Length) was used as cracking susceptibility index. The solidification mode shifted from primary ferrite to primary austenite with an increase in nitrogen content. Retained delta ferrite exhibited a variety of morphology as nitrogen content varied. The weld fusion zone exhibited duplex structure(austenite+ferrite) at nitrogen contents less than 0.10 wt.% but fully austenitic structure at nitrogen contents more than 0.20 wt.%. The weld fusion zone in alloys with about 0.15 wt.% nitrogen experienced primary austenite + primary ferrite solidification (mode AF) and contained delta ferrite less than 1% at room temperature. Regarding to solidification cracking susceptibility, the welds with fully austenitic structure exhibited high cracking susceptibility while those with duplex structure low susceptibility. The cracking susceptibility increased slowly with an increase in nitrogen content up to 0.20 wt.% but sharply as nitrogen content exceeded 0.20 wt.%, which was attributed to solidification mode shift fro primary ferrite to primary austenite single phase solidification.
The ferrite plating with applying power ultrasound waves of 19.5 kHz and 600W enabled us to encapsulate entirely MnZn ferrite cores for transformers with Ni$\sub$x/Zn$\sub$y/Fe$\sub$3-x-y/O$_4$coating. Supplying a NH$_4$OH solution during the plating broke the limit of the solubility of Ni ions to ferrite-plated films. The electrical resistivity of the NiZn ferrite coating increased with increasing the Ni and Zn content, reaching 2.3${\times}$10$\^$5/Ωcm at the composition of Ni$\sub$0.24/Zn$\sub$0.30/Fe$\sub$2.46/O$_4$. The saturation magnetization was 540 emu/㎤. As a result, the MnZn ferrite cores were successfully encapsulated with the NiZn ferrite coatings for an insulation layer.
The influences of solidification rates and carbon contents on the formation of the $\delta$-ferrite were studied by directional solidification in modified 12%Cr-l %Mo steels. Directional solidification experimental results showed that solidification microstructure depended on solidification rate and carbon content and chromium equivalent. The length of the mushy zone increased and the dendrite arm spacings decreased as the solidification rate increased. The volume fraction of the 8-ferrite decreased with increasing the solidification rate and carbon content. The volume fraction of the ferrite showed much higher at low solidification rates with planar and cellular interfaces than that at high solidification rates with dendritic interface. It is expected that macro-segregation of C causes lower C content at the lower solidification fraction in the directionally solidified sample, where lower C results in higher volume fraction of the ferrite. In order to estimate solidification microstructure in modified 12Cr-l%Mo steels, various solidification conditions, such as solidification rate, cooling rate, segregation, alloy composition, should be considered.
