Background: Women make up half of the world's population, and comprise 20% of the world's one billion smokers. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of smoking among female medical students in comparison to female non-medical students, and to assess the importance of medical education and knowledge in decreasing the prevalence of smoking among female university students in Saudi Arabia. Method: We used a self-administered questionnaire to collect cross-sectional data from a randomly selected sample of 320 female students attending King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah. Medical students comprised 50% of the sample. Results: A total of 310 students (96.9%) completed and returned the questionnaire. The prevalence of smoking was higher in non-medical female students (4.2%) compared to medical female students (0.32%) (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of smoking is low among female medical students compared to female non-medical students, presumably because of their awareness, level of education, and knowledge of the risks to health associated with smoking. Our study highlights the need for increased knowledge, health education, and awareness of the risks of smoking to reduce smoking among female university students.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the university student's dietary behaviors, lifestyle and nutrition knowledge. The survey were composed of 81 male and 64 female students at W University in Daejeon. Results of survey shown that BMIs of male students was 23.9 which is higher significant at p<0.001 than female students was 20.8. In lifestyle, dietary habit patterns of female students showed higher significant in meal if under stress and snack intake at p<0.05. In terms of dining-out, both female and male students like Korean food. However, female students like Western food and flour-based food than their male counterpart. While male liked Chinese and Japanese foods at p<0.05. A siginificant higher proportion of male students smoked (p<0.001); drink (p<0.01) and exercised (p<0.05) than their female counterpart. In terms of nutrition knowledge, males have higher scores (out of a possible 15 points) than female scores (p<0.01). The results of this study suggests that nutrition education can motivate and improve dietary management for dietary compliance. Therefore, a proper planned nutrition education programs for university students is an efficient and effective education method.
Purpose: This study investigates the relationship among stress, Yangsaeng and subjective happiness in female undergraduate nursing students in the Republic of Korea. Method: The subjects of this study were 283 female undergraduate nursing students in Korea. Data were collected using a self-reporting questionnaire. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Stepwise multiple regression and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$. Results: Yangsaeng negatively correlated with stress (r=-.299, p<.001) but positively correlated with subjective happiness (r=.440, p<.001). Stress negatively correlated with subjective happiness (r=-.238, p<.001). Stepwise multiple regression revealed that Yangsaeng and satisfaction with the field of nursing explained 25.4% of subjective happiness. Conclusion: The Yangsaeng oriental health care regimen could lower stress and heighten subjective happiness. Therefore, Yangsaeng could be recommended as a feasible means of promoting health and subjective happiness.
This study was intended to look into the actual status of using their own traditional clothes, by Korean and Japanese female college students, and to compare the differences of their perceptions about the traditional clothes of their own and the other countries, and thus to present the ways beneficial for Korean female college students to establish their positive recognition toward traditional clothes. For the study, the questionnaire method was used, by which a total of 375 sheets was collected; Frequency analysis and t-test were conducted with a SPSS 12.0 statistic program. The findings were as follows; Korean female college students, in comparison with their Japanese counterparts, owned less traditional clothes suitable and wearable for their body, and so they had a less number of wearing and renting experiences. In addition, they indicated a low level of realization about the suitability of traditional clothes to the wearers in their 10's, 20's and 30's. While they thought highly of their traditional clothes in the item of 'pride,' they had a low level of recognition in the item of 'knowledge,' and they considered the traditional clothes to be inconvenient. Korean college students revealed a lower level of favorable interest in the other country, but they had a higher level of evaluation for the items of 'design applicability' and 'popularity' than the Japanese college students did.
Contemporary young people reveal their own personal values through the fashion that creates visual looks. Since 2000s began, young generations who are self-centered, value their own personality and constantly seek for changes form the main axis of fashion. In particular, the lower half of the body that has begun to be exposed outward has become the region that they want to expose as more ideal region than the upper half of the body. Further, young generations always have interest in fashion, and female college students in their early 20s are regarded as the group that values the aspects of pleasure that involve clothes and tends to seek sensibility when purchasing clothes. With this background, this study aims to examine how the styles that apply to modern fashion and recent vogues are evaluated with a focus on skinny jean from jean pants styles preferred by female college students. Materials regarding theoretical background and photos were collected from fashion related magazines at home and abroad and from the Internet websites. Questionnaires were surveyed for 160 female college students aged 20 or 25 who live in Seoul, and the results show as follows: Many female college students enjoy skinny jean and follow the fashion. However there are consumers who cling to their own styles even in the fashion of skinny jen. Ironically, some consumers wear it although they consider it as an item that does not fit Koreans: they tend to consider perspectives from others rather than their own preferences. For example, they wear it in order to show it to their boy friends or because they want themselves to look slim. In addition consumers seem to use Dongdaemun Shopping Mall or Internet shopping malls that provide various and low-priced items rather than to use high-priced famous products. It is considered that this result is shown as above because the scope of the study was restricted to female college students in their 20s. Accordingly, it is suggested that further studies should extend their subjects to wider range of ages.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate perceived stressor, the characteristics of personality and stress responses of college students and to compare their gender differences. Method: This study was cross-sectional survey and participants were 146 college students. Data was collected by Perceived Daily Life Stressor Scale of college students, Lim's Character Style Inventory, Vulnerability of Personality, and Stress Response Index, demographic questionnaire from May to September, 2012 in two cities. Results: Friend relationship stressor(p=.024) and professor relationship stressor(p=.032) among daily life stressors of female students were significantly higher than male students. Fatigue(p=.009), anger(p=.046), somatization(p<.001) and total stress response(p=.049) of female students were significantly higher than male student. Challenge(p=.034) of LCSI of female students was significantly higher than male student and stability(p=.018) of male students was significantly higher than female students. Regression model of stress response in male college students was significant(F=35.18, p<.001) and influencing factors were vulnerability of personality and challenge($R^2$=.544). Regression model of stress response in female college students was significant(F=39.38, p<.001) and influencing factors were vulnerability of personality, perceived stress type, and sociability($R^2$=.612). Conclusion: These findings need to be reflected to develop stress management programs and mental health promotion programs for college students.
This study was done to evaluate the antioxidant status of female college students by determining their intakes and plasma levels of antioxidnt vitamins (vitamin C, A and E) and total antioxidant status (TAS). Subjects were 46 healthy female college students aged 20 - 29 years. Body composition was determined by a multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Dietary intakes were examined by 24hr record method and nutrients intakes were analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional analysis program for professional (CAN-pro). Plasma vitamin C level were measured by spectrophotometric method and retinol, ${\beta}$-carotene, ${\alpha}$-tocopherol were measured by HPLC. Plasma TAS was measured with a Randox kit using the trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) method. Daily energy and protein intakes of the female college students were 1670.5㎉ (83% of RDA) and 63.3g (115.1% of RDA), respectively. However their intakes of Ca and Fe were below 75% of RDA. Their intakes of vitamin A and C were 596.6 ${\mu}$ gRE (85.2% of RDA) and 71.0mg (101.4% of RDA), respectively. Plasma levels of vitamin C, retinol, ${\beta}$-carotene and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol were 14.7mg/L, 0.7mg/L, 0.2mg/L and 9.1mg/L, respectively which were within normal range. There was no subject with deficiency or marginal level in plasma vitamin A and C. However 1.6% of the subjects had below adequate level in vitamin E. Plasma TAS level was 1.2mmol/L. Correlation data showed that all plasma antioxidant vitamins were positively correlated with plasma TAS. Overall data indicate that the antioxidant status of female college students were pretty good. However it might be necessary to educate them to eat more fruits and vegetables for preventing many chronic diseases in a later life. (J Community Nutrition 5(1) : 13∼20, 2003)
This study was to analyzed the quality of the meal and the level of nutritional intake in female college students according to the place of residence in female college students. This survey was conducted through questionnaire was given to 359 female students. The subjects were divided into two groups : one group was comprised of those the students who resided in a self-boarding house(SB group, n=245), and the other group comprised of was the student those who resided in the same house with their parents(HWP group, n=114). The mean age of the subjects were 21.6 years old(SB) and 20.6 years old(HWP)(p<0.05). The average height, weight and BMI were 161.8 cm, 57.9 kg, $20.3kg/m^2$ in the SB group and 161.9 cm, 53.4 kg, $20.3kg/m^2$ in HWP group, respectively. The SB group had significantly higher frequency of skipping breakfast and alcohol drinking consumption than the HWP group. There was no significant differences in the mean daily energy intakes between the SB and the HWP groups. However, the plant protein(p<0.01), carbohydrate (p<0.05), vitamin $B_1$(p<0.01), vitamin $B_2$(p<0.05), vitamin C(p<0.01), plant calcium(p<0.01) and potassium(p<0.05) intakes were significantly lower in the SB group were lower than the intakes in the HWP group significantly. And in addition, the cereals(p<0.05) and fruits(p<0.001) intakes in the SB group were significantly lower than the intakes in the HWP group. There was no significant differences in the KDDS and DVS between the two groups, but there was a decreasing trending downward. For that reason, the SB students seemed appeared to have more dietary problems than the HWP students. These results suggest that nutritional education for SB students are is needed in order to supply the lack of management capability on the proper help improve the diet of students living in independently life.
Purpose: This study is intended to compare musculoskeletal characteristics and Bone Mineral Density (BMD)-related factors between male and female students in a university. Methods: This descriptive study used self-report questionnaires and physical measurements to collect data. Subjects were 64 male and 67 female university students. The questionnaires asked BMD-related factors such as diet, exercise, mental health, and lifestyle. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test and correlation analysis. Results: The male group showed better back strength, balance, endurance, physical activity, and musculoskeletal health management than the female group. Depression and smoking rates were higher in the male group than in the female group. No difference was found in diet between the two groups. Conclusion: The results suggest to develop gender-specific strategies to increase BMD in university students.
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of appearance management behaviors on career decision level among female college students. Based on previous studies on appearance management behaviors and career decision level, the items for a questionnaire were developed. For the study, we conducted a questionnaire survey among 292 students from women's university in Seoul. Factor analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS statistics 23. Results of this study are as follows. First, the factor structure of appearance management behavior had three factors: 'fashion & hair,' 'skin & plastic surgery,' and 'body shape.' The reliability and validity of the factor structure were proved. Second, a significant correlation was found between sub-factors in appearance management behaviors. Career decision level showed a significant correlation only with body management factor. Third, the appearance management behavior of female college students was found to have a partially significant effect on career decision level. For higher grade students, fashion & hair factor and body shape factor had positive effects on career decision level. For lower grade students, body shape factor had a positive effect on career decision level while skin & plastic surgery factor had a negative effect on career decision level. Therefore, to increase career decision level, managing appearance through keeping fit body shape is crucial. This study also suggests that as one elevates to a higher grade, the importance of management and keeping interest toward fashion is important.
