  • In this study, binderless consolidation processes of ultra foe Si powder, by-products of making high purity poly-Si in the current method, were systematically investigated for use as economical solar-grade feedstock. The average diameter of the silicon powder was $7.8{\mu}m$. The main contaminants of the fine silicon powder were $SiO_2$ type oxide and humidity. The chemical pretreatment using the HF solution was observed to be effective for the improvement of the compactability of the silicon powder and the density ratio and the strength of the silicon powder compacts. The yield of the binder-free consolidation process increased by 20% under a vacuum condition. In as-received state, the silicon powder were not pure enough to be used as solar grade feed-stock material. After the dry chemical treatments, a sufficiently high purity above solar-grade was able to be achieved.

  • In the present work, a basic study on the in-situ biogenic methane generation from low grade coal bed was conducted. Lignite from Indonesia was used as a sample feedstock. A series of BMP (Biochemical Methane Potential) tests were carried out under the different experimental conditions. Although nutrients and anaerobic digester sludge were added to the coal, the produced amount of methane was limited. Both temperature control and particle size reduction showed little effect on the increase of methane potential. When rice straw was added to lignite as an external carbon source, methane yield of 94.4~110.4 mL/g VS was obtained after 60 days of BMP test. The calorific value of lignite after BMP test decreased (4.5~12.1 %) as increasing the content of rice straw (12.5~50 wt % of lignite), implying that anaerobic digestion of rice straw led to partial degradation of lignite. Therefore, rice straw could be used as an external carbon source for the start-up of in-situ biogas generation from low grade coal bed.

  • The production of bioethanol, which is one of the alternative fuel, cause the various problem such as agflation in human society. As a substitute for the feedstock, lignocellulosic biomass have a big potential. However, bioethanol production with cellulosic material is not commercialized due to high cost. Thermochemical pretreatment to improve the rate of enzyme hydrolysis and increase the recovery of fermentable sugar, is required in order to achieve the cost down in bioethanol production. In this study, various problems and technologies for pretreatment is introduced. Acid hydrolysis, alkali hydrolysis, steam explosion, organosolv process, ammonia explosion, and wet oxidation pretreatment remove lignin and hemicellulose, and reduce cellulose crystallinity. Optimization of pretreatment process on various sources of lignocellulosic biomass such as softwood, hardwood, and straw should be performed.

  • Coal is the most abundant energy source and deposited in every area of world. Combustion process with lower efficiency has been mainly used. Therefore, implementation of more efficient technologies, involving gasification, combined cycles and fuel cells, would be a key issue in the plans for more efficient power generation. In these technologies, gasification has been studied for decades. However, coal gasification to high value combustible gas such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide is focused again due to high oil price. The gaseous product, called syngas, can be effectively utilized in a variety of ways ranging from electricity production to chemical industry (as feedstock). In this study, coal gasification with ultra high temperature steam has been performed. The effect of steam/carbon ratio on the produced gas concentrations, gasification rate and additional products like tar, ammonia and cyan compounds has been determined.

  • The optimal design of batch-storage network by using periodic square wave model provides analytical lot sizing equations for a complex supply chain network characterized as multi-supplier, multi-product, multi-stage, non-serial, multi-customer, cyclic system including recycling and/or remanufacturing. The network structure includes multiple currency flows as well as material flows. The processes are represented by multiple feedstock/product materials with fixed composition which are very suitable for production processes. In this study, transportation processes that carry multiple materials with unknown composition are added and the time frame is changed from single period into multiple periods in order to represent nonperiodic parameter variations. The objective function of the optimization involves minimizing the opportunity costs of annualized capital investments and currency/material inventories minus the benefit to stockholders in the numeraire currency. The expressions for the Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the optimization problem are reduced to a multiperiod subproblem for average flow rates and analytical lot-sizing equations. The multiperiod lot sizing equations are different from single period ones. The effects of corporate income taxes, interest rates and exchange rates are incorporated.

  • Recently, as the demand for limited resources continues to rise and problems of resource depletion rise worldwide, the importance of renewable energy is gradually increasing. In order to solve these problems, various methods such as energy conservation and alternative energy development have been suggested, and biogas, which can utilize the gas produced from biomass as fuel, is also receiving attention as the next generation of innovative renewable energy. New and renewable energy using biogas is an energy production method that is expected to be possible in large scale because it can supply energy with high efficiency in compliance with energy supply method of recycling conventional resources. In order to more efficiently produce and manage these biogas, a biogas plant has emerged. In recent years, a large number of biogas plants have been installed and operated in various locations. Organic wastes corresponding to biogas production resources in a biogas plant exist in a wide variety of types, and each of the incoming raw materials is processed in different processes. Because such a process is required, the case where the biogas plant process is inefficiently operated is continuously occurring, and the economic cost consumed for the operation of the biogas production relative to the generated biogas production is further increased. In order to solve such problems, various attempts such as process analysis and feedback based on the feedstock have been continued but it is a passive method and very limited to operate a medium/large scale biogas plant. In this paper, we propose "CNN-based production yield prediction algorithm for increasing process efficiency of biogas plant" for efficient operation of biogas plant process. Based on CNN-based production yield forecasting, which is one of the deep-leaning technologies, it enables mechanical analysis of the process operation process and provides a solution for optimal process operation due to process-related accumulated data analyzed by the automated process.

  • In this study, anaerobic co-digestion was carried out using desulfurization sludge and sewage sludge (primary sludge) to evaluate the effects of sulfur compounds in anaerobic digestion. The experiment was carried out in the form of a batch test using 500 mL duran bottle, and the mixing ratio of the feedstock was selected based on the ratio of COD/SO4. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the amount of biogas generated and the yield decreased at the mixing ratio of COD/SO4 20 or less. In particular, below COD/SO4 10, it was lower than seed (283.5 mL) which was set without feedstock to correct biogas generated by itself from seed sludge. Methane yield tended to decrease from a ratio of COD/SO4 20 or less to 0.135 m3/kg VS compared to 0.396 m3/kg VS of COD/SO4 50. In addition, compared to 0.0097 m3/kg VS of hydrogen sulfide yield from COD/SO4 50, the ratio of COD/SO4 20 increased sharply to 0.0223 m3/kg VS, and in particular, the highest result was 0.0855 m3/kg VS in COD/SO4 10. Based on these results, it is judged that the effect of sulfide in anaerobic digestion can have an adverse effect if the COD/SO4 ratio decreases to less than 20.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of seaweed (SW) addition on the anaerobic digestion of food waste (FW). Anaerobic batch experiments were carried out at various substrate concentrations (2.5 to 10.0 g VS/L) and mixing ratios (FW:SW=100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100 on VS basis) of FW and SW. The methane yield of FW alone was 394, 377, 276, $49mL\;CH_4/g\;VS_{added}$ at each substrate concentration (2.5 to 10.0 g VS/L). In cases of co-digestion, methane yield decreased (up to 15 %) with increasing mixing ratio of SW at low substrate concentration (2.5 to 5.0 g VS/L), while it increased (up to 240 %) at high substrate concentration (7.5 to 10.0 g VS/L). The synergistic effect was calculated based on the amount of methane generated from the single-feedstock digestion of FW and SW. The synergistic effect was not found at 2.5 and 5.0 g VS/L. However, the synergistic effect increased (up to 25% = synergistic increment/total methane production at 10.0 g VS/L, FW:SW=50:50) with increasing the ratio of seaweed at 7.5 and 10.0 g VS/L. At 10.0 g VS/L of FW alone, the accumulated amount of organic acids was 7,426 mg COD/L, which was decreased to 2,346 mg COD/L by seaweed (FW:SW=50:50) addition. The reason for the synergistic effect was to control the production rate of the organic acids by adding SW that has a relatively lower biodegradability compared to FW.
