In this paper, a decoupled proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control approach for seismic control of smart structures is presented. First, the state space equation of a structure is transformed into modal coordinates and parameters of the modal PID control are separately designed in a reduced modal space. Then, the feedback gain matrix of the controller is obtained based on the contribution of modal responses to the structural responses. The performance of the controller is investigated to adjust control force of piezoelectric friction dampers (PFDs) in a benchmark base isolated building. In order to tune the modal feedback gain of the controller, a suitable trade-off among the conflicting objectives, i.e., the reduction of maximum modal base displacement and the maximum modal floor acceleration of the smart base isolated structure, as well as the maximum modal control force, is created using a multi-objective cuckoo search (MOCS) algorithm. In terms of reduction of maximum base displacement and story acceleration, numerical simulations show that the proposed method performs better than other reported controllers in the literature. Moreover, simulation results show that the PFDs are able to efficiently dissipate the input excitation energy and reduce the damage energy of the structure. Overall, the proposed control strategy provides a simple strategy to tune the control forces and reduces the number of sensors of the control system to the number of controlled stories.

We present a P-type iterative learning control(ILC) scheme for uncertain robotic systems that perform the same tasks repetitively. The proposed ILC scheme comprises a linear feedback controller consisting of position error, and a feedforward and feedback teaming controller updated by current velocity error. As the learning iteration proceeds, the joint position and velocity mrs converge uniformly to zero. By adopting the learning gain dependent on the iteration number, we present joint position and velocity error bounds which converge at the arbitrarily tuned rate, and the joint position and velocity errors converge to zero in the iteration domain within the adopted error bounds. In contrast to other existing P-type ILC schemes, the proposed ILC scheme enables analysis and tuning of the convergence rate in the iteration domain by designing properly the learning gain.

An electro-hydraulic copying system is developed and its performance is experimentally investigated. As compared with a mechanical hydraulic coping system, this system has a basic difference in that; (1) the stylus movement is converted into an electrical signal via a position transducer. (2)the actuator displacement is also measured by a position sensing element, which serves as a feedback signal. Since the system parameters affect the control performance, the response characteristics such as percentage overshoot, rise time, settling time and steady state error are experimentally obtained under variation of these variables. The system parameter include supply pressure, servo amplifier gain and feedback gain. The experimental result shows that the cutting tool follows a stylus input motion to a desirable accuracy. The implication of this result indicates that the developed system can enhance the copying accuracy of the conventionally used mechanical type of hydraulic copying system.

This paper presents a new discrete-time fuzzy-sliding mode controller for robust vibration control of a smart structure featuring a piezofilm actuator. A governong equation of motion for the smart beam structure is derived and discrete-time codel with mismatched uncertainties such as parameter variations is constructed ina state space. A discrete-time sliding mode control system consisting of an equivalent controller and a discontinuous controller is formulated. In the design of the equivalent part, so called an equivalent controller separation method is adopted to achieve vzster convergence to a sliding surface without extension of a sliding region, in which the system robustness maynot be guaranteed. On the other hand, the discontinuous part is constructed on the basis of both the sliding and the convergence conditions using a time-varying feedback gain. The sliding moide controller is then incorporated with a fuzzy technique to appropriately determine principal control parameters such as a discountinuous feedback gain. Experimental implementation on the forced and random vibraiton controls is undertaken in order to demonstrate superior control performance of the proposed controller.

This paper reports the active vibration control of plates using positive position feedback controller (PPF). The equations of motion of the plate under force and moment pairs were derived and the equations of PPF controllers were formulated. The effect of the parameters - gain and damping ratio - of the PPF controllers on the open loop transfer function was investigated mainly in terms of the system stability. Increasing the gain of the PPF controller tuned at a mode, the magnitude of the open loop transfer function is increased at all frequencies without changing the phase behavior. The increase of the damping ratio of the PPF controller leads to decrease the magnitude of the open loop transfer function and to modify its phase characteristics to be more stable. Two PPF controllers connected in parallel, Each PPF controller is tuned at the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ modes, respectively. Their parameters were determined to remain the system to be stable based on the results of the parametric study. A significant reduction in vibration at the 2 modes can be obtained.

This paper reports active control of clamped beams using acceleration feedback controllers (AF). The equations of motion of clamped beam under force and moment pairs were derived and the equations of AF controllers were formulated. The effect of the parameters - gain and damping ratio - of the AF controllers on the open loop transfer function was investigated mainly in terms of the system stability. Increasing the gain of the AF controller tuned at a mode, the magnitude of the open loop transfer function is increased at all frequencies. The increase of the damping ratio of the AF controller leads to decrease the magnitude of the open loop transfer function and modifies its phase characteristics to be more stable. Three AF controllers connected in parallel were then proposed. Each AF controller is tuned at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th modes, respectively. Their parameters were determined to remain the system to be stable based on the results of the parametric study. A significant reduction in vibration at the 3 modes can be obtained.

This paper deals with the robust nonlinear controller design using output feedback for a Chua circuit which is one of the well-known nonlinear models. First, an exosystem for reference signal tracking is defined, and error dynamic equations are derived from the differentiation of the output tracking error equation. The normal sliding surface is modified using the integral type servo compensator. The parameters in the equations of the modified sliding surface and servo compensator are determined by using the Hurwitz condition of stability. Especially the error signals can't be obtained directly from the output because all parameters are assumed unknown. So instead, a high gain observer is designed. From this estimated error signals, a stabilizing controller is designed. Simulation is done for demonstrating the effectiveness of the suggested algorithm.

This paper investigated the effect of the zero on the right-half-plane on stability in the buck-boost DC-DC converter which is one type of the switching regulator, and the stability region in connection with the output current was shown by evaluating the feed-back gain. From the result it is shown that the stability decreases by the existence of the zero on the right-half-plane. We carried out a compensation by a pole in the feedback circuit and obtained the available stability region in relation to the gain band-width product. These results proved to be the validity by experiment.

This paper presents an active vibration control of cantilever beams under disturbances by a primary force. A direct velocity feedback control using a pair of PZT actuator and a velocity sensor is considered. Variation of the stability and performance with the locations of the sensor/actuator pair is investigated. It is found that the maximum gain varies with the locations of the sensor/actuator pair significantly. The maximum gain shows a symmetric distribution along the beam length with respect to the center point, although the boundary condition of the beam is unsymmetric. The control performance is affected by the location of the primary force as well as the location of the sensor/actuator pair. The active control system can more effectively reduce the vibration when the primary force is located close to the fixed boundary.
This paper presents a longitudinal acceleration controller that can be applied to real vehicles (nonlinear and time-varing systems) with only a simple experiment regardless of the type of vehicle and the control interface structure. The controller consists of a feedforward term for fast response, a zero-throttle acceleration compensation term, and a feedback term (P gain) to compensate for errors in the feedforward term, and another feedback term (I gain) to respond to disturbances such as slope. In order to easily apply it to real vehicles, there are only two tuning parameters, feedforward terms of throttle and brake control. And the remaining parameters can be calculated immediately when the two parameters are decided. The tuning procedure is also unified so that it can be quickly and easily applied to various vehicles. The performance of the controller was evaluated using MATLAB/Simulink and Truksim's European Ben model. In addition, the controller was successfully implemented to 3 medium-sized vehicle (HMC Solati), which is composed of different control interface characteristic. Vehicle driving performance was evaluated on the test track and on the urban roads in Siheung and Seoul.
