This study is the case of groundwater development based on the geometrical fracture model of target area established only through geological fracture mapping technique. A fracture mapping of $9km^2$, eastern Munsan, has been conducted to determine geological and hydrological factors for new water well placement in the Gyeonggi gneiss complex. Geophysical exploration was not applicable because of small restricted area and dense underground utilities at the site. Form line mapping on the basis of foliation orientation and rock type revealed a synform of NS fold axis bearing to the south. An EW geological cross-section passed through the site area shows a F2 synform as a double-wall ice cream spoon shape. Three regional faults of $N20^{\circ}E,\;N30^{\circ}W$, and NS have been dragged into the site to help understand extensional fault paths. The $N20^{\circ}E$ fault with dextral sense is geometrically interpreted as a western fault of two flexural conjugate type-P shear faults in the F2 synformal fold. The NE cross-section reveals that a possible groundwater belt in the western limb of super-posed fold area is formed as a trigonal prism within 100 m depth of the intersectional space between the $N20^{\circ}E$ fault plane and the weakly sheared plane of transposed foliation. Another possible fault for water resource strikes $N40^{\circ}E$. Recommended sites for new water well placement are along the $N20^{\circ}E\;and\;N40^{\circ}E$ faults. As a result of fracture mapping, 145 ton/day of water can be produced at one well along the $N20^{\circ}E$ fault line. Exploration of groundwater in the area is succeeded only using with geological fracture mapping and interpretation of geological cross-section, without any geophysical survey. Intersection of fault generated with the F2 synformal fold and foliation supply space of groundwater reserver.
To analyze lateral displacement of excavation walls exposed during the construction of Subway Line 1 in the Daegu region, inclinometer measurement data for sites D4, D5, and Y6 are investigated from the perspective of engineering geology. The study area, in the Banyawol Formation, Hayang Group, Gyeongsang Supergroup, is in the lower part of bedrock of andesitic volcanics, calcareous shale, sandstone, hornfels, and felsite dykes that are unconformably overlain by soil. The rock mass around the D4 site is classified as RMR-V grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 101.39 mm, toward N34W, was measured at a bedding-parallel fault, at a depth of 12 m. The rock mass around the D5 site is classified as RMR-IV grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 55.17 mm, toward the south, was measured at a lithologic contact between shale and felsite, at a depth of 14 m. The rock mass around the Y6 site is classified as RMR-III grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 12.65 mm, toward S52W, was measured at an unconformity between the soil and underlying bedrocks, at a depth of 7 m. The directions of lateral displacement in the excavation walls are vector sums of the directions perpendicular to the excavation wall and horizontally parallel to the excavation wall. Lateral displacement graphs according to depth in the soil profile show curvilinear trajectories, whereas those in bedrock show straight and rapid-displacement trajectories.
Electrical resistivity methods of dipole - dipole array profiling and Schiumberger array sounding were tested on a segment of the Woraksan granitic batholith for the research into the imaging of irregular attitudes of fracture zones in the crystaaline rock in terms of processing and interpretation schemes. By the dipole - dipole array method, inhomogeneities such as small scale of fracture zones were properly delineated down at some depth even within hard rock environment. Fracture zones were interpreted to be at the boundaries between the high amplitude zone and very low amplitude zone in the resistivity plot and they were also successfully outlined in two - dimensional layer and pseudo - three - dimensional volume constructed by the incorporation of vertical sounding data. The surface location of the fracture zones was correlated by the zero - crossing point in the VLF(very low frequency) electromagnetic data. Pseudo - three - dimensional attitudes of fracture zones were efficiently illuminated by optimum projection angle. The mean of bulk resistivity for the Woraksan granite and the near fracture zones is estimated to be approximately of 4,000 ohm - m which is much higher than the value of 700 ohm - m for the Rwachunri limesilicate environment. This difference is due to both the rock type, i.e., biotite granite vs limesilicate, and the occurrence of secondary openings of fold and fault associated with the intrusion of granite. In this study statistical analyses on the resistivity color plot were performed in terms of three representative statistical moments, i.e., standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis. The fracture zones in the standard deviation plot were characterized by the higher value, compared to the value of homogeneous portion. The upper boundary of the high resistivity zone was also successfully delineated in the skewness and kurtosis plots.
The purpose of this study is to investigate a feasibility of a small mountain as a field work site on geological features in Earth sciences classes at all levels. Mt. Geumdang with the height of 305 meters from the sea level is located in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, southern part of Korea. The study reviews the human and natural geography, geological features, geomorphic resources, landscapes, and conveniences of the mountain for a possibility of meaningful field work. The population within the distance of 5 km from the mountain stands at about 620,000 and 170,000 of them are students and teachers. Mt. Geumdang has a warm temperature climate with low rainfall throughout the year, so it seems suitable for a field survey. Road network and public transportation system around the area are well-developed and easily accessible. Mt. Geumdang shows various rock type and geological structures. The basement rock is Gwangju granite, which is plutonic body of the Jurassic period. Also, granophyre (micrographic granite) and various volcanic rocks distributed as bedded tuff, lapilli tuff, and rhyolite of the Cretaceous period. Many andesitic and felsic dykes were intruded into the rock by joint system. In Mt. Geumdang, many geomorphic resources are found such as U shaped mountain, joint, fault, lamination, gnamma, tor, cliff, groove, block stream and block field, regolith, and saprolite. It has a beautiful mountain scenery including the view of whole shape of Mt. Mudeung, panoramic view of the town, Pungam lake, World Cup stadium and sunrise and sunset. Furthermore, the area has ecologic study facilities related to geology, emergency medical and convenience facilities for field works. In conclusion, Mt. Geumdang is highly feasible for geological field studies at all levels.

Granitoid rocks are generally high-quality rock from a geotechnical perspective, because they rarely contain systematic joints or fragmented fault zones. Although the rock type at the Sanhak site is granite, a collapsed slope has a deep soil layer and shows no residual structures such as discontinuities or faults; surface avalanches from this slope can be observed in several places. To study the stability of this slope, we investigated rainfall duration, variation in pore-water pressure, and the factor of safety considering three cases (current cross-section, initial planning cross-section, revised planning cross-section). With increasing duration of rainfall, the groundwater level rises, up to 20 m in height from ground surface. In the initial planning cross-section, safety was secure for rainfall of 2 days duration, but inadequate for rainfall of 4 days duration. In the revised planning cross-section, however, safety factors were secure for rainfall of 4 days duration. Therefore, to ensure permanent stability at the Sanhak site, a slope degree of 1:1.8 should be maintained during cutting.

There is a limestone basin surrounded by the mountains consisted of Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks in the Masung, Munkyung city, Kyungsangpook do. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the geomorphic processes of the gentle hillslopes in the marginal piedmont of Masung basin. To do so, I analyzed deposits over hillslopes and the relation ship between the distance from the divide and the height(above sea level) at the longitudinal profile of the hillslope, and considered interrelation between the distributions of the gentle hillslopes(less than 230m) and lithology. Geomorphic processes of Masung basin are as follow: (1) The depth of deposits over hillslope increases toward downstream of the hillslope. Most gravels within deposits, whose lithology is limestone, are those eroded at the boundary(overthrust fault zone) between the back-mountain and the hillslope. Deposits at the outward margin of hillslope is well sorted. and moderately imbricated. (2) Hillslope at the margin of the basin(160-230m asl) is formed by the action of 'the flow with channel'. At the boundary between the soft rock(limestone; basin floor) and hard rock(sedimentary and metamorphic rock; back-mountain), the relatively weak limestone is eroded to fresh bedrock by the subsequent action of the overland flow, and therefore discontinuity in slope appeared. (3) After hills lopes were formed, sediments(boulders and fine material) produced during dissection in back-mountain buried deposits over hillslope. In conclusion, geomorphic processes of Masung basin is 'differential erosion due to differentiation of lithological hardness' having suggested as geomorphic processes of granitic basin. However it is not 'removal of weathering material due to sheetflow' but 'erosion due to the overland flow with channel'.

Korea Stress Map database is built by integrating actual data of 1,400 in-situ stress measurements using hydraulic fracturing and overcoring method in South Korea. Korea Stress Map 2020 is presented based on the guideline proposed by World Stress Map Project. As detailed data, stress ratio and maximum horizontal stress direction distribution for each region are also presented. The dominant maximum horizontal stress direction in the Korean Peninsula is from northeast to southeast, and the magnitude of the in-situ stress is relatively distributed. There is some stress heterogeneity caused by local characteristics such as topographical and geological properties. We investigated case studies in which the in-situ stress was affected by mountainous topography, difference in rock quality of fracture zone, presence of mine or underground cavities, and geological structure of fault zone.

The area to be studied is the place where the main line rail way will be constructed in accordance with the scheduled construction project of Yeongju dam, and is a fold and mylonite zone over several km that is formed by ductile-shearing effect. The ductile shear zone, which has been transformed by faulting for long geological time, shows a complicated geological structure. Due to the recrystallization of mineral caused by transformation in deep underground (>8km), a mylonite zone with lamellar structure has properties distinguished from other fault zones formed by transformation near earth surface <2km). To see the properties of mylonite, this study analyzed the transformation rate of sample rocks and the shape of constriction structure accompanied with transformation. While the transformation of fault zone shows a round oblate, the mylonite zone shows a prolate form. Transformation rate in fault zone was measured to be less than 1.2 compared to the state before transformation while the measured rate in mylonite zone was 2.5 at most. Setting the surface of discontinuity as the base, the unconfined compressive strength of slickenside can be categorized in sedimentary rocks, and a change of strength was observed after water soaking over certain time. Taking into account that the weathering resistance of the rock based on mineral and chemical organization is relatively higher, its engineering properties seems to result from the shattered crack structure by crushing effect. When undertaking tunnel construction in mylonite zone, there should be a special care for the expansion of shattered cracks or the fall of strength by influx of ground water.
The purpose of this work is to gain a better understanding of the interrelationships between geological structures and slope failure in sedimentary rocks. In the studied slopes, construction-related slope failure could only be observed on the south-dipping slopes. This indicates that slope stability may be dependent on the angular relationships between the dip direction of bedding and the orientation of the slope. Slope failure continued, post-construction, around large fault zones in the studied outcrop; these fault damage zones are, however, not easily recognized in the field. Here we suggest a new method that uses accumulated fracture density to precisely identify fault damage zones. Multiple-faced slopes are now increasingly being exposed during large-scale construction projects in South Korea. This multiple-faced slope analysis indicates that the stability of a slope should be evaluated by identifying domains, through the analysis of possible slopes and their angular relationships with bedding and other discontinuities, prior to construction. Therefore, careful consideration of geological structures such as bedding and other discontinuities, and their angular relationships during the design of cuttings through sedimentary rocks, will increase the efficiency of construction and enable the safe construction of more stable slopes that will retain their stability after construction.
Heaving of road and subsidence of slope took place at the Wiri region of the local highway 999 in Gyeongsangbukdo, Korea after heavy rain in the next year of construction. Although the state government had performed remedial treatments by reducing the angle and the height of the slope, deformation had never stopped. Therefore, we have preformed the analysis of deformation and stabilityof the slope. Study area consists of the Cretaceous shale, siltstone and sandstone and two faults are found. The major deformation occurred by sliding of rock mass along faults after heavy rain because not only thepore pressure at the fault plane and the unit weight of sliding mass increased, but did the shearstrength of saturated fault clay become very low. The decrease in shear strength of saturated fault clayis the major factor among the reasons for deformation. Numerical simulations using limit equilibriummodel, finite difference model and finite element model were performed for eight cross sections.Although safety factors are above 1.7 during the dry season, they become below 1.0 when groundwaterlevel raises to surface. The maximum displacement is about 15-3Ocm. However, safety factors increasedto above 2.4 and the maximum displacement is below 2.08cm after remedial treatment, Indicating thatthe slope becomes stable.
