The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability of strong motion records processed by causal and acausal Butterworth filters in comparison to the results obtained from a synthetic accelerogram. For this purpose, the fault parallel component of the Bolu record of the Duzce earthquake is modeled with a sum of exponentially damped sinusoidal components. Noise-free velocities and displacements are then obtained by analytically integrating the synthetic acceleration model. The analytical velocity and displacement signals are used as a standard with which to judge the validity of the signals obtained by filtering with causal and acausal filters and numerically integrating the acceleration model. The results show that the acausal filters are clearly preferable to the causal filters due to the fact that the response spectra obtained from the acausal filters match the spectra obtained from the simulated accelerogram better than that obtained by causal filters. The response spectra are independent from the order of the filters and from the method of integration (whether analytical integration after a spline fit to the synthetic accelerogram or the trapezoidal rule). The response spectra are sensitive to the chosen corner frequency of both the causal and the acausal filters and also to the inclusion of the pads. Accurate prediction of the static residual displacement (SRD) is very important for structures traversing faults in the near-fault regions. The greatest adverse effect of the high pass filters is their removal of the SRD. However, the noise-free displacements obtained by double integrating the synthetic accelerogram analytically preserve the SRD. It is thus apparent that conventional high pass filters should not be used for processing near-fault strong-motion records although they can be reliably used for far-fault records if applied acausally. The ground motion parameters such as ARIAS intensity, HUSID plots, Housner spectral intensity and the duration of strong-motion are found to be insensitive to the causality of filters.
This paper presents protection techniques against electric shock in low voltage DC(direct current) grounding systems depending on the analysis of earth fault current paths. Firstly, the comparison between alternating current and direct current on human was conducted, and current threshold values for each current path and for long duration were analyzed. Secondly, the analyses of the earth fault current flows were performed depending on the grounding types and earth fault conditions. Lastly, based on these analyses, adequate protection measures of electric shock depending on low voltage DC grounding types were provided.
This paper analyze the bus voltage sags in the power distribution system with a small scale cogeneration system when the superconducting fault current limiter was introduced. Among the solutions to decrease the short-circuit current considering the locations of the small scale cogeneration system, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been announced as one of the promising methods to reduce the fault current because the installation of the small scale cogeneration system which increases the short-circuit current. According to the application locations of the small scale cogeneration system in a power distribution system, it has caused the variations of voltage sag and duration which depends on the change of the short-circuit current, which can make the operation of the protective device deviate from its original set value when the fault occurs. To investigate the voltage sag when a SFCL was applied into a power distribution system where the small scale cogeneration system was introduced into various locations, the SFCL, small scale cogeneration system, and power system are modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC. In this paper, the effects on voltage sags are assessed when the SFCL is installed in power distribution system with various locations of the small scale cogeneration system.
This paper presents a modeling and simulation of a grid-connected wind turbine generation system with respect to wind variations and three-phase fault in the system. It describes the modeling of the wind turbine system including the drive train model, induction generator model, and grid-interface model on MATLAB/Simulink. Case studies demonstrate that the pitch angle control is carried out to achieve maximum power extraction for wind speed variations and the duration of a fault on the system influences on the output of the wind turbine generator.
The empirical Green's function method is applied to the foreshock and the mainshock of the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake to simulate strong ground motions of the mainshock and scenario earthquake at seismic stations of seven metropolises in South Korea, respectively. To identify the applicability of the method in advance, the mainshock is simulated, assuming the foreshock as the empirical Green's function. As a result of the simulation, the overall shape, the amplitude of PGA, and the duration and response spectra of the simulated seismic waveforms are similar with those of the observed seismic waveforms. Based on this result, a scenario earthquake on the causative fault of Gyeongju earthquake with a moment magnitude 6.5 is simulated, assuming that the mainshock serves as the empirical Green's function. As a result, the amplitude of PGA and the duration of simulated seismic waveforms are significantly increased and extended, and the spectral amplitude of the low frequency band is relatively increased compared with that of the high frequency band. If the empirical Green's function method is applied to several recent well-recorded moderate earthquakes, the simulated seismic waveforms can be used as not only input data for developing ground motion prediction equations, but also input data for creating the design response spectra of major facilities in South Korea.
The addition of switches to a distribution feeder does, in general, increase reliability by decreasing the duration of the outage of many to the customers on the feeder. To cover its service area so that feeder-level delivery reaches sufficiently close to all customers, feeders typically split their routes many times, in what is often called a lateral feeder. It is interesting to note, however, that the effectiveness of a switch is very much dependent on the types of lateral feeder. The types of lateral are classified into two types. The first is loop lateral feeder that can connect its load to an adjacent feeder through a tie line in case that a fault occurs in its feeder and it is laid out so that every feeder has complete fault backup through re-switching of its loads to other sources like a main feeder. The second is the radial lateral feeder cannot connect its load to an adjacent line, no provision is made for contingency backup of feeders. There are no other circuits in the radial lateral feeder form which to restore power. In this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of a switch installation between on the radial and loop lateral feeders to increase reliability by decreasing the duration of the outage. These results can help power utility to design the switch layouts on the radial and loop lateral feeder system.

To verify the feasibility of bifilar winding type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using BSCCO tape, two types of magnets were fabricated and tested by short-circuit in this research. Even if the FCL using high Tc superconducting (HTS) tape has zero resistance in normal state, it needs to be wound as a bifilar winding for zero inductance. Solenoid type and pancake type bifilar winding magnets are designed and fabricated with the same length of BSCCO tape. The test system consists of AC power supply, transformer, fault switch, load and bifilar winding magnet. The applied AC voltages during fault duration, 0.1s, were from 0.5V to 20V. The test results without bifilar winding magnet were compared with those with each type magnets. The test results include voltage against magnet, transport current and generated resistance curve. Thermal stability, the recovery time, was studied from the results of two type magnets. The pancake type was the most effective to limit fault current but the solenoid type was thermally the most stable. From this research, short-circuit characteristics of the two types were obtained.
For the application of superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) to the protection system, quench recovery characteristics of Au/YBCO thin film were investigated. The Au/YBCO thin film was designed as a SFCL element with a bi-spiral pattern. The SFCL element limited the fault current successfully. For the analysis of the recovery to superconducting state, we measured resistance variation of the SFCL element after the quench. In addition, in order to investigate the dependence of quench characteristics of SFCL on the $LN_2$ cooling condition, we measured the recovery time under a pressure of 1, 2 and 3 atm. As the results, the recovery time increased in proportion to the duration of the fault currents. In the sub-cooled condition, while the quench development was exactly the same, the recovery time was shortened as the pressure increased.
Petrological, paleomagnetic, geomorphological and structural studies on the southern part of, so called, Chugaryeong rift valley, have been carried out in order to clarify the nature of the rift valley. Three stages of volcanic activities characterized by Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and tholeiitic and andesitic basalt of Cretaceous age(?), and Jongok Quaternary olivine basalt occurred along the Dongducheon fault line. Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks distributed in the central part of the studied area consist of rhyodacite, acidic tuff and tuff breccia, which are bounded by Dongsong fault on the east and Daegwangri fault on the west. The Jongok basalt differs from those of Ulrung and Jeju islands in mineralogy, chemical composition and differentiation. Jongok basalt distributed along the Hantan river dilineates the vesicles curved toward downstream direction and increment of numbers and thickness of lava flow toward upstream direction. These facts suggest that lava flowed from upstream side of the river. Rectangular drainage patterns also support the presence of the Dongducheon, Pocheon, Wangsukcheon and Kyonggang faults which were previously known. LANDSAT image, however, does not show any lineaments which could be counted as a graben or rift valley. Displacement of Precambrian quartzite and Jurassic Daedong supergroup along the southwestern extension of the Dongducheon fault shows the right lateral movement. The Paleomagnetic study of the tholeiitic and andesitic basalts from Baegeuri, Jangtanri and Tonghyeonri located at 2. 3km east, 0km east, and 1.5km west of Dongducheon fault respectively shows that their VGP(Virtual Geomagnetic Pole) being to intermediate geomagnetic field of short duration which suggests that they formed in almost same period. Mean VGP of Jongok basalt is located 82.4N and 80.6E. This is in good coincidence with worldwide VGP of Plio-Pleistocene indicating that Jongok basalt was extruded during Plio-Pleistocene epoch, and suggesting that the studied area has been tectonically stable since then. From the present study, the tectonic episode of the region is concluded as following three stages. 1. The 1st period is worked by the Daebo orogeny of Jurassic during which granodiorite was intruded in Precambrian basement. 2. The 2nd period is the time when right lateral strike-slip fault of NNE-SSW direction was formed probably during late Cretaceous to Paleogene and the Jijangbong acidic volcanic rocks and the older basalts were extruded. 3. The 3rd period is the time when the fault was rejuvenated during Pliocene or Pleistocene accompanied by the eruption of Jongok basalt. As a conclusion, geologic structure of the studied area is rather fault line valley than graben or rift valley, which is formed by differential erosion along the Dongducheon fault suggesting a continuation of the Sikhote-Alin fault. The volcanic rocks including the Jijangbong acidic rocks, tholeiitic-andesitic basalt and olivine basalt are associated with this fault line.
