  • The behavior of fatigue was studied by using low carbon steel bar with microhole(artificial small defect) under the condition of rotary bending stress which is made artificially at smooth surface and round notch root. The results obtained can be summerized; The behavior of non-propagating cracks which are produced at both tips of small defect occurred to dissymmetry, and it is found to be double size of small defect. For the range of l>lc, threshold stress intensity is constant. However, for the range of l

  • Quest for reliability of hydraulic runners is a concern for all mature electricity producers. The fatigue damage caused by dynamics loads is frequently the root cause of runner failure. This paper presents the damage tolerance approach based on fracture mechanics as the method chosen by Alstom and Hydro-Qu$\acute{e}$bec to predict effects of damage on runner lifetime and consequently to be use as a design method. This is sustained by a research on fracture mechanics properties of runner materials and by recommendations on the strategy to define a safety margin for design. The acquired knowledge permits to identify potential improvement of the runner lifetime without significant cost increase, like being more specific on some chemical composition or heat treatment.

  • The post core system has been used for reconstructon of severely damaged crown by caries or trauma. But problems such as crown exfoliation, post core fracture and root fracture have been reported. Ideal mechanical properies of the post require high fracture strength, high elastic limit and high resistance against fatigue and corrosion Modulus of elasticity of the post should be similar with that of dentine. Low hardness is also required for the convenience of post removal in failure. Furthermore, the post itself must be translucent for the esthetical purpose. Several types of the post have been developed to satisfy the criteria above mentioned. The purpose of this study was to find out the mechanical properties of quartz fiber post by comparing with those of gold post and zirconia post. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Maximal fracture strength and stiffness of quartz fiber post were similar with those of gold post and zirconia post. 2. Young's modulus and hardness of quartz fiber post were lower than those of gold post and zirconia post. Mechanical property of quartz fiber post against post fracture was similar with that of gold post and zirconia post. Mechanical property of quartz fiber post against root fracture was higher than that of gold post and zirconia post. Quartz fiber post could be removed easily due to low hardness.

  • In this paper fatigue strength reduction of butt weld with penetration defect, which can be seen frequently in the steel bridge, was assessed quantitatively. S-N curves were derived and investigated through the constant amplitude fatigue test of fully or partially penetrated welded specimen made of SWS490 steel. The fracture mechanical method was applied in order to calculate the remaining fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt welds. The fatigue limit of the fully penetrated butt welds was higher than that of category A in AASHTO's fatigue design curves, and the slope of S-N curves with 5.57 was stiffer than that of other result for welded part generally accepted as 3. The fatigue strength of the partially Penetrated butt weld was strongly influenced by the size of lack of penetration, D. It decreased drastically with increasing D from 3.9 to 14.7mm. Fracture behaviour of the partially penetrated butt weld is able to be explained obviously from the beach mark test that a semi-elliptical surface crack with small a/c ratio initiates at a internal weld root and propagates through the weld metal. To estimate the fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt weld with fracture mechanics, stress intensity factors K of 3-dimensional semi-elliptical crack were calculated by appling finite elements method and fracture mechanics parameters such as C and m were derived through the fatigue test of CT-specimen. As a result, the fatigue lives obtained by using the fracture mechanical method agreed well with the experimental results. The results were applied to Sung-Su bridge collapsed due to penetration defects in butt weld of vertical member.

  • Kind 1 propeller shaft in ships is the shaft which is provided with effective measures against corrosion by sea water, or the shaft which is made of approved corrosion resistance materials. The propeller shaft other than specified above is Kind 2. Thus, this study is mainly concerned with the resistance to fatigue damage in sea water against stress concentrations due to the notches. The results obtained can be summarized as follows; (1) The stress increases with curing time, however, when the curing time reaches at 96 hours the stress becomes a constant value. The elongation decreases with curing time, however, when the curing time reaches at 48 hours the elongation becomes a constant value. Thus, in case of FRP coating on propeller shaft, it is necessary to cure for 48 hours at least. (2) The relation of $\sigma$$_n$-K$_t$ is to be classified into two parts, which is a part where fracture nominal stress, $\sigma$$_n$, decreases with increasing $K_t$, and a part where $\sigma$$_n$ is nearly constant independent of $K_t$. (3) According to a linear notch mechanics, the measure of severity controlling the fracture in notched FRP body is the notch root radius, $\rho$. The notched static strength of an arbitrary specimen will be estimated from $\sigma$$_{max}$ -1/$\rho$ curve. (4) Through the observation of cross section after fatigue test, the part of interface was kept good condition irrespective of loading conditions.

  • The fracture of a turbine blade of aerospace engine is presented. Although there are a lot of causes and failure modes in blades, the main failure modes are two ways that fracture and fatigue. Degradation of blade material affects most failure modes. Total propagation of failure in this study specifies failure of fracture type. Some section appears fatigue mode. Especially since this study describes analysis of failure for blade in high temperature, it can be a case in point. Analysed blade is Ni super alloy. Investigations of blade are visual inspection, material, microstructure, high temperature stress rupture creep test, analysis and fracture surface, etc. The root cause for fracture was stress rupture due to abnormal thermal environment. Thermal property of Ni super alloy is excellent but if each chemical composition of alloys are different due to change mechanical properties, selection of material is very important.

  • The dynamic fracture toughness, fracture characteristics, impact tension and tensile properties of Al-Mg-Si T5 alloy and Al-Zn-Mg T6 alloy respectively welded with filler metal of Alcan 4043 were investigated. The dynamic fracture toughness values were obtained rapidly and simply for the specimen of small size by using instrumented Chirpy impact testing machine. the testing temperatures of the specimen were a range of room temperature and-196.deg. C. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows. With decreasing the testing temperatures, dynamic tensile stress and fracture load were increased, on the other hand the deflection and impact value showed decreasing tendency in order of base metal>HAZ>weld. Changes of total absorbed energy were more influenced by the crack propagation energy than the crack initiation energy. At the low temperatures, the unstable rapid fracture representing the crack propagation appeared for the specimens of Charpy press side notched in Al-Zn-Mg alloy, but it was difficult to obtain the unstable rapid fracture in Al-Mg-Si alloy. Because of the development of plastic zone at the notch root, it was difficult to obtain thevalid $K_{1d}$ value in Al-Mg-Si alloy. Therefore the fatigue cracked specimens were effective in both Al-Mg-Si and Al-Zn-Mg alloys. With decreasing the impact testing temperatures, specimens underwent a transition from dimple-type transgranular fracture to lamella surface-type intergranular fracture because of the precipitate at the grain boundaries, impurities and crystal structure of the precipitates.s.

  • Inherent damage zone model is presented to explain the fatigue properties near the fatigue limit and the crack growth threshold consistently Inherent damage zone model assumes that the stress at a point which is located at a small distance, $r_0$, an inherent length of the material that represents the size of effective damage zone, from the crack initiation position governs the fatigue characteristics regardless of the geometric configuration of the specimen; smooth specimen, notched specimen or cracked specimens with short and long crack length. A special feature of the paper is using the exact stress distributions of notched and cracked specimens at the strength evaluations. Analytical elastic solutions by Neuber and Westergaard are employed for this purpose Relationship between fatigue limit of smooth specimen and threshold stress of cracked specimen, occurrence condition of non-propagating crack at the root of elliptic notch and circular hole and relationship between stress concentration factor and fatigue notch factor are discussed quantitatively based on the proposed model.

  • In-plane tension fatigue tests (R = 0.05) were carried out to investigate the initiation and propagation behaviors of micro-surface-fatigue cracks on smooth surfaces of a mild steel. Also, the investigations of saturated cyclic strain which can be obtained by the fatigue tests have been made via the cyclic strain intensity factor, .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$/, for the purpose of unifying two approaches of the study of fatigue; the one approach is based on the fracture mechanics concept and the other on lowcycle fatigue concept. Some of the results are as follows; The growth rate, d(2a)/dN, of small cracks cannot be represented by one straight line as a function of .DELTA.K for various of the nominal stress range, .DELTA..sigma., and is higher than that of a larger through crack. The rearrangement of the d(2a)/dN by .DELTA..epsilon..root..pi.s( = .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$/) with the stress range .DELTA..epsilon. in .DELTA.K replaced by .DELTA..epsilon., strain range, gives one straight line of the .DELTA. $K_{\epsilon}$-d(2a)/dN relation for various values of stress range .DELTA.$_{\epsilon}$../.X>../.
