An Experimental Study for Flexural Characteristic of Concrete Beam Reinforced with FRP Rebar under Static and Fatigue (FRP 보강근을 사용한 콘크리트 휨부재의 정적 및 피로특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Corrosion of steel in the reinforced concrete structures is one of the main reason of degradation. It causes that lifetime of structures is shortened and maintenance cost is increased. And it also causes degradation of structures like bridges which are under repeated load. So, many research have been performed about FRP rebar. But there are few research about FRP rebar under fatigue. This study is to examine flexural characteristic of concrete beam reinforced with FRP(CFRP, GFRP) rebar under static and fatigue for considering the application. The specimens that used in this study are designed by ACI 440.1R-06 and reinforced with CFRP(CR) or GFRP(GR) overly. In the result of static bending test, all specimens were failed at compression phase. In fatigue test, the fatigue stress level was 60%, 70% or 80% of the static bending strength. Most of the specimens seemed to be compressive failure, but CR-60 and CR-70 specimens were failed with rupturing of tension bar.

  • To replace a steel box bridge for constructions of medium span bridges in Korea, the Hybrid Truss Bridge (HTB) is being considered as an alternative bridge type. The core technology of HTB is the connection joint that links the concrete slabs and steel truss pipes. Various construction companies in Japan have developed unique connection systems and applied to the real bridge constructions after verifying their performances through the experimental evaluation. In this study, the fatigue test of a hybrid truss girder has been performed in order to verify the newly proposed hinge type connection joint`s static and fatigue capacities. Through this fatigue test results, it is founded that the structural detail to improve the fatigue capacity should be developed. The hinge connection system with circular ribs has been proposed by means of structural finite element analyses. And then the fatigue test for this connection joint has been performed and it is proved that this connection joint has enough fatigue capacity. Finally, it is expected that the hinge connection system with circular ribs developed by in this study can be easily applied to the real bridge.

Evaluation of Rail Fatigue and Bending Fatigue Considering Concrete Track Condition (콘크리트도상(STEDEF)의 선로조건을 고려한 레일휨응력 예측과 피로수명 산출)

  • Rail is the main track component, playing the most important role in safe railways. For the sake of safety, it is strictly required to secure reliability against fatigue and destruction of rail. In this paper, by field measurement on concrete track, it is confirmed that the rail surface roughness and rail bending stress are linearly correlated with each other; the bending stress of rail can be presented as a function of train speed, track support stiffness, and rail surface roughness. The fatigue life of rail can be estimated by deriving the S-N curve through the fatigue test.

  • This study is intended to investigate the shear fatigue behaviour of reinforced concrete beams based on a series of experiments, and verify the test results in comparison with the analysis result obtained by using a nonlinear finite element method. The experiments are divided into the tests under the static loading and the test under the dynamic fatigue loading. In order to investigate the shear failure behaviour under static loadings, four specimens for three different cases were made and tested. The behaviour of stirrups with the static stress and strain variations were observed based on the results of these tests. In the fatigue fracture tests, eleven specimens for four different cases were made and tested. Various observations on mid-span deflection of test beams and tensile strains of reinforcing steels as well as stirrups were made against various fatigue loadings. It may be concluded that the shear fatigue strengths of R.C. specimens at one million cycles turn out to be approximately 65 percent of the static ultimate shear strength.

Evaluations of Structural Performance of Recycled Aggregate Concrete According to Replacement Ratios (치환율에 따른 순환골재 콘크리트의 구조성능 분석)

  • This study is a fundamental research in order to establish the design code of recycled aggregate concrete structure. The structural properties of recycled aggregate concrete such as flexure, shear, fatigue, compression, and bond development are experimentally investigated and confirmed. In this study, laboratory-scale reinforced concrete beam, column, and pull-out test specimens using recycled coarse aggregate are manufactured. Then, the structural performances of recycled aggregate concrete according to replacement ratios of recycled coarse aggregate are evaluated. Also, finite element analysis using commercial code DIANA is carried out to predict the test results and the analysis results are compared with test results in this study. Structural test results showed that the structural performances of recycled aggregate concrete specimens with 60% replacement ratio are reduced by approximately 15-20%. These results indicated that the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate within 30% is a suitable to use for structural members. The results of finite element analysis showed that the specimens with 30% replacement ratio possessed similar or more excellent structural performance than normal concrete specimens. However, recycled aggregate concrete with 60% replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate must be carefully considered for structural applications due to significant decrease of the failure loads.

  • Integral and rigid frame bridges have advantages in bridge maintenance and structural efficiency by eliminating expansion joints and bridge supports. However, the detail of typical girder-abutment connection is rather complex and increases construction cost depending on construction detail. For the purpose of compensating disadvantages such as complexity and additional cost, a new type of bridge is proposed in this study, which improves the efficiency of construction by simplifying the construction detail of girder-abutment connection. The proposed bridge has the connection detail of steel girder and abutment integrated by prestressed PS bar installed in the connection. In this study, finite element analysis and fatigue load test are conducted to evaluate the fatigue capacity of the proposed girder-abutment connection. The results of the finite element analysis revealed that the possibility of the fatigue damage in the girder-abutment connection is very low. The results of the fatigue load test verified that the integrity of the girder and abutment connection is maintained after 2,000,000 cycles of fatigue loading.

Bond Stress-Slip Model of Reinforced Concrete Member under Repeated Loading (반복하중을 받는 철근콘크리트 부재의 부착응력-슬립 모델)

  • The crack widths of reinforced concrete flexural members are influenced by repetitive fatigue loadings. The bond stress-slip relation is necessary to estimate these crack widths realistically. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to propose a realistic model for bond stress-slip relation under repeated loading. To this end, several series of tests were conducted to explore the bond-slip behavior under repeated loadings. Three different bond stress levels with various number of load cycles were considered in the tests. The present tests indicate that the bond strength and the slip at peak bond stress are not influenced much by repeated loading if bond failure does not occur. However, the values of loaded slip and residual slip increase with the increase of load cycles. The bond stress after repeated loading approaches the ultimate bond stress under monotonic loading and the increase of bond stress after repeated loading becomes sharper as the number of repeated loads increases. The bond stress-slip relation after repeated loading was derived as a function of residual slip, bond stress level, and the number of load cycles. The models for slip and residual slip were also derived from the present test data. The number of cycles to bond slip failure was derived on the basis of safe fatigue criterion, i.e. maximum slip criterion at ultimate bond stress.

  • The objective of this study is aimed at developing a new class of polymer concrete, in which hydration of cement and curing of a thermosetting resin can take place simultaneously during the mixing of concrete components. For the selected mix-proportion of the new polymer, the physical and mechanical properties needed for designs are presented. These important properties are compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength, direct strength, fatigue characteristics and fracture parameters. The observed properties are always compared with conventional concrete to serve as reference for engineer in deciding or selecting the proper materials for their projects, and shore protecting structure.

  • Methods for mixing variable types of steel fibers have been developed recently to suppress outbreak of crack or to control the width of crack and improve the load resistible capacity at the same time. On the other hand, uncertainty by complex nature of destruction dynamics of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) is included. In this study, analysis of reliance considering uncertainty of SFRC beam is done. For this, intensity limit state model was proposed. Moreover, characteristic values about almost every kinds of probability variables were collected and presented according to home and foreign references. Process of improving uncertainty from the result of experiments by Bayseian updating method is also proposed on the purpose of offering better statistical characteristic values with more data in the new future. Remaining life prediction of concrete structural components accounting for tension softening and size effects under fatigue loading

  • This paper presents analytical methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening and size effects. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. Size effect has been accounted for by modifying the Paris law, leading to a size adjusted Paris law, which gives crack length increment per cycle as a power function of the amplitude of a size adjusted stress intensity factor (SIF). Details of tension softening effects and size effect in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction have been presented. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete beams under constant amplitude loading. The predicted remaining life values with the combination of tension softening & size effects are in close agreement with the corresponding experimental values available in the literature for all the tension softening models.
