  • The hydraulic or pneumatic valve spools become essential as the important components on the production of automatic hydraulic or pneumatic as mechanical industry has been rapidly developed. The machining precision is in necessity for manufacturing the valve spools. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional are welding. And also they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing because their shapes are generally small. By the precision casting process such as lost wax process, the production cost may be increased. But by the friction welding technique, they will be able to be manufactured without such problems. This paper deals with the development of dissimilar friction welding optimization for the hydraulic or pneumatic valve spool by friction welding and a new approach of on real-time qualify evaluation by AE techniques.

  • The 120 meters high pressure feedwater heater drain piping in nuclear power plant had been suffered by excessive vibration from the beginning of power generation. As time goes by, the piping vibration was beyond the allowable limit and an appropriate countermeasure was required to prevent the fatigue failure of the pipeline from the abnormal vibration. In this study, the vibrational characteristics of high pressure feedwater heater drain piping and the countermeasure for abnormal vibration were investigated. Among the several vibration reduction methods, the piping layout changed by making the smooth pipeline was applied to the high Pressure feedwater heater drain piping in nuclear Power plant. Applying the countermeasure, the vibration level was found to reduce over 54 percents and was satisfied under the allowable velocity at the full-power operation condition.

  • The thermo-acoustic instability in the combustion process of a gas turbine is caused by the interaction of the heat release mechanism and the pressure perturbation. These acoustic vibrations cause fatigue failure of the combustor and decrease the combustion efficiency. This study is to develop a segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model to understand combustion instability of gas turbine. Therefore, this study required a dynamic analysis rather than static analysis, and developed a segmented model that can analyze the performance of the system over time using the Matlab/Simulink. The developed model can confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability and exhaust gas concentration in the combustion chamber according to the equivalent ratio change, and confirm the thermo-acoustic combustion instability for the inlet temperature and the load changes. As a result, segmented dynamic thermo-acoustic model has been developed to analyze combustion instability under the operating condition.

Effects of Thermal and Mechanical Fatigue Stress on Bond Strength in Bracket Base Configurations (열적, 기계적 피로응력이 교정용 브라켓의 결합강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue stress on the shear, tensile and shear-tensile combined bond strengths(SBS, TBS, CBS) in various orthodontic brackets bonded to human premolars with chemically cured adhesive(Ortho-one, Bisco, USA). Five types of commercially available metal brackets with various bracket base configurations of Photoetched base(Tomy, Japan), Non-Etched Foil Mesh base(Dentaurum, Germany), Micro-Etched Foil Mesh base(Ortho Organizers, USA), Chessboard base(Daesung, Korea), and Integral base(3M Unitek, USA) were used. Samples were divided into 3 groups, the first group was acted with shear-tensile combined loads($45^{\circ}$) of 200g for 4 weeks(mechanical fatigue stress), the second group was subjected to the 5,000 thermocycles of 15 second dwell time each in $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ baths(thermal fatigue stress), and the third group was the control. Bond strengths were measured at the crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The cross-section of bracket base/adhesive interface and the fracture surface were examined with the stereoscope and the scanning electron microscope. The resin remnant on bracket base surface was assessed by ART(Adhesive Remnant Index). The obtained results were summarized as follows, 1. In static bond strength, Photoetched base bracket showed the maximum bond strength and Integral base bracket showed the minimum bond strength(p<0.05). In all brackets, shear bond strength(SBS) was in the greatest value and shear-tensile combined strength(CBS) was in the least value(p<0.05). 2. After mechanical fatigue test, Photoetched base bracket showed the maximum bond strength and Integral base bracket showed the minimum bond strength(p<0.05).   • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue on the shear bond strength(SBS) in orthodontic brackets bonded to human premolars with chemically cured adhesive(Mono-$Lok^2$, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics). Two types of metal brackets (Ormesh, Microloc) and three types of ceramic brackets (Fascination, Starfire, Transcend 2000) were used in this study. The $10^6$ loadcycles of $|7.4{\times}10{^2}sin2{\pi}ft|g{\cdot}cm$ and the 1,000 thermocycles of 15 second dwell time each in $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ baths were acturated as mechanical and thermal fatigue stress, and SBS were measured after each fatigue test. The fracture sites were examined by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows, 1. In static shear bond test, Fascination brackets showed the maximum SBS($20.78\pm3.45$ MPa) and Microloc brackets showed the minimum SBS($14.88\pm3.10$ MPa). Fascination and Starfire brackets showed significantly greater SBS than Microloc brackets(P<0.05). 2. In mechanical fatigue test, Fascination brackets showed the maximum SBS ($20.19\pm3.45$ MPa) and Starfire brackets showed the minimum SBS($9.10\pm8.33$ MPa). The SBS or Transcend 2000 brackets(P<0.01) and Starfire brackets(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^6$ loadcycles. 3. In thermocycling test, Ormesh brackets showed the maximum SBS ($19.36\pm2.76$ MPa) and Starfire brackets showed the minimum SBS($11.94\pm6.86$ MPa). The SBS of Transcend 2000(P<0.01), Microloc and Starfire brackets(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^3$ thermocycles. 4. Failure sites of thermocycling groups were similar to those of static groups but after mechanical fatigue test, Ormesh and Transcend 2000 brackets failed at the bracket/resin interface and Microloc brackets failed within adhesive. Facination brackets failed at the enamel/resin interface irrespective of experimental condition.

  • Numerous oil tanker losses have been reported and one of the possible causes of such casualties is caused by the structural failure of aging ship hulls in rough weather. In aging ships, corrosion and fatigue cracks are the two most important factors affecting structural safety and integrity. This research is about effect on hull girder ultimate strength behavior of double hull oil tanker according to corrosion after Part I: stiffened panel. Based on corrosion data of Part I (time-dependent corrosion wastage model and CSR corrosion model), when progressing corrosion of fourtypes of double hull oil tankers (VLCC, Suezmax, Aframax, and Panamax), the ultimate strength behavior of hull girder is compared and analyzed. In case of the ultimate strength behavior of hull girder, when occurring corrosion, the result under vertical and horizontal bending moment is analyzed. The effect of time-dependent corrosion wastage on the ultimate hull girder strength as well as the area, section modulus, and moment of inertia are also studied. The result of this research will be useful data to evaluate ultimate hull girder strength of corroded double hull oil tanker.

  • The proportion of natural gas-fueled power generation is expanding due to the change of domestic energy policy pursuing reduction of dust and increasing clean energy consumption. Natural gas fuels used for the combined-cycle power plants and the district-heating power plants are operated at high temperature and high pressure in the fuel supply system. Accidents due to leakage of the gas such as fire and explosion should be prevented by applying risk management techniques. In this study, risk assessment was performed on the natural gas fuel supply system of a combined power plant based on the API RP 581 RBI code. For the application of the API RBI code, lines and segments of the evaluation target system were identified. Operational data and input information were analyzed for the calculations of probability of failure and consequence of failure. The results of the risk assessment were analyzed over time from the initial installation time. In the code-based evaluation, the gas fuel supply system was mainly affected by thinning, external damage, and mechanical fatigue damage mechanisms. As the operating time passes, the risk is expected to increase due to the external damage caused by the CUI(Corrosion Under Insulation).

THE EFFECTS OF MECHANICAL AND THERMAL FATIGUE ON THE SHEAR BOND STRENGTH OF ORTHODONTIC ADHESIVES (기계적 및 열적 피로가 교정용 접착제의 결합강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue on the shear bond strength(SBS) of stainless steel mesh brackets bonded to human premolar teeth with 3 no-mix adhesives. The stainless steel mesh bracket was Ormesh(Ormco, .022 slot) and three types of no-mix adhesives were Ortho-one(Bisco), $Monolok^2$(RMO), $System\;1^+$(Ormco). The $10^6$ loadcycles of $17.4{\times}10^2sin2{\pi}ftlg{\cdot}cm$ and the 1,000 thermocycles of 15 second dwell time in each bath of $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ were acturated as mechanical and thermal fatigue stress, and SBS were measured after each fatigue test. The fracture sites were analyzed by stereoscope and scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Before thermocycles, $Monolok^2$ showed the highest Knoop hardness number(KHN, $64.03kg/mm^2$) and $System\;1^+$ showed the lowest value($31.60kg/mm^2$). After thermocycling, $Monolok^2$ also showed the highest KHN($38.03kg/mm^2$) and $system\;1^+$ showed the minimum($20.87kg/mm^2$). The KHN of Ortho-one, $Monolok^2,\;System\;1^+$ significantly decreased after thermocycling (P<0.01). 2. In static shear bond test, three adhesives had no significant differences in the SBS(P>0.01). 3. After thermocycling test, $Monolok^2$ showed the maximum SBS($19.34{\pm}2.75MPa$) and Ortho-one showed the minimum SBS($13.66{\pm}2.23MPa$). The SBS of Ortho-one(P<0.01) and $System\;1^+$(P<0.05) significantly decreased after $10^3$ thermocycles. 4. The SBS of three adhesives after $10^6$ loadcycles were similar and were not significantly decreased compared with static group(P>0.01). 5. The failure sites were usually bracket/resin interface in all groups irrespective of experimental conditions.

A Model for the Optimal Mission Allocation of Naval Warship Based on Absorbing Markov Chain Simulation (흡수 마코프 체인 시뮬레이션 기반 최적 함정 임무 할당 모형)

  • The Republic of Korea Navy has deployed naval fleets in the East, West, and South seas to effectively respond to threats from North Korea and its neighbors. However, it is difficult to allocate proper missions due to high uncertainties, such as the year of introduction for the ship, the number of mission days completed, arms capabilities, crew shift times, and the failure rate of the ship. For this reason, there is an increasing proportion of expenses, or mission alerts with high fatigue in the number of workers and traps. In this paper, we present a simulation model that can optimize the assignment of naval vessels' missions by using a continuous time absorbing Markov chain that is easy to model and that can analyze complex phenomena with varying event rates over time. A numerical analysis model allows us to determine the optimal mission durations and warship quantities to maintain the target operating rates, and we find that allocating optimal warships for each mission reduces unnecessary alerts and reduces crew fatigue and failures. This model is significant in that it can be expanded to various fields, not only for assignment of duties but also for calculation of appropriate requirements and for inventory analysis.

Automated detection of corrosion in used nuclear fuel dry storage canisters using residual neural networks

  • Nondestructive evaluation methods play an important role in ensuring component integrity and safety in many industries. Operator fatigue can play a critical role in the reliability of such methods. This is important for inspecting high value assets or assets with a high consequence of failure, such as aerospace and nuclear components. Recent advances in convolution neural networks can support and automate these inspection efforts. This paper proposes using residual neural networks (ResNets) for real-time detection of corrosion, including iron oxide discoloration, pitting and stress corrosion cracking, in dry storage stainless steel canisters housing used nuclear fuel. The proposed approach crops nuclear canister images into smaller tiles, trains a ResNet on these tiles, and classifies images as corroded or intact using the per-image count of tiles predicted as corroded by the ResNet. The results demonstrate that such a deep learning approach allows to detect the locus of corrosion via smaller tiles, and at the same time to infer with high accuracy whether an image comes from a corroded canister. Thereby, the proposed approach holds promise to automate and speed up nuclear fuel canister inspections, to minimize inspection costs, and to partially replace human-conducted onsite inspections, thus reducing radiation doses to personnel.
