  • Since the deterioration of concrete bridge decks affect durability, safety, and function, structural rehabilitation of damaged concrete deck that was strengthened with Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) is increasing the latest. But recent studies on the strengthened structures are focused on the static behavior, however only a few studies on the fatigue behavior are performed. In this study, static and fatigue behavior of strengthened deck were peformed on 11 deck specimens strengthened with sheet typed Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer(GFRP) that were reinforced by two different strengthening methods for the static test. A amount of strengthening material in the each direction such as transverse and longitudinal was adopted experimental variables for the static test and also the stress level of the static maximum load are adopted for the fatigue test. By the results of the experimental study, with respect to the strengthened decks, the resistance effect of crack propagation and effect of stress distribution are improved. In addition, the rate of variation of compliance decreased.

  • This paper presents methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening effect. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. A methodology to account for tension softening effects in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction of concrete structural components has been presented. The tension softening effects has been represented by using any one of the models mentioned above. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete structural component under constant amplitude loading. Remaining life has been predicted for different loading cases and for various tension softening models. The predicted values have been compared with the corresponding experimental observations. It is observed that the predicted life using bi-linear model and power curve model is in close agreement with the experimental values. Parametric studies on remaining life prediction have also been conducted by using modified bilinear model. A suitable value for constant of modified bilinear model is suggested based on parametric studies.

  • The objective of the paper is to study the impact of changing the traditional hull design of bulk carriers by providing them with a double hull while keeping the same deadweight. It is demonstrated that by introducing the double hull the structural reliability is increased throughout the entire life and also the extend of the needed repair is reduced. The results are obtained with recently developed mathematical tools for the reliability assessment of ship hulls subjected to the existence of multiple cracks both in the stiffeners and in the plating and it models the crack growth process. The effect of corrosion is represented as time dependent. The long-term stress range acting on the elements is defined as a function of the local transverse pressure of the internal cargo and outside sea water combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combineation of horizontal and vertical bending moments. The effect of maintenance actions is modelled as a stochastic process. The results show that a different design of the midship section improves the structural safety and also the economy with respect to structural repair of bulk carriers.

  • Additive manufacturing by electron beam melting is an affordable process for fabricating near net shaped parts of titanium and its alloys. 3D additive-manufactured parts have various kinds of voids, lack of fusion, etc., and they may affect crack initiation and propagation. Post process is necessary to eliminate or minimize these defects. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is the main method, which is expensive. The objective of this paper is to achieve an optimum and simple post heat treatment process without the HIP process. Various post heat treatments are conducted for the 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V specimen below and above the beta transus temperature ($996^{\circ}C$). The as-fabricated EBM Ti-6Al-4V alloy has an ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite structure and transforms into the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ duplex phase during the post heat treatment. The fatigue strength of the as-fabricated specimen is 400 MPa. The post heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C/30min/AC$ increases the fatigue strength to 420 MPa. By post heat treatment, the interior pore size and the pore volume fraction are reduced and this can increase the fatigue limit.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the cooling rate after heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 2507 duplex stainless steels. Heat treatment was carried out at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, followed by controlled cooling. The cooling rates were $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $47.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $33.3{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $16.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $11.7{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ and $2.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$, which resulted in variations of the microstructure, such as the fractional change of the ferrite phase and sigma phase formation. Fatigue, hardness, impact and tensile tests were performed on the specimens with different cooling rates. The precipitation of the ${\sigma}$ phase caused a hardness increase and a sharp decrease of toughness and tensile elongation. The fatigue limit of the sample with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was 26 MPa higher than that of the sample with a cooling rate of $175.6{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$. Our observations of the fracture surface confirmed that the higher fatigue resistance of the specimen with a cooling rate of $5.8{\times}10^{-3}^{\circ}C/s$ was caused by the delay of the fatigue crack growth, in addition to higher yield strength.

  • The characteristics of fretting wear are reviewed. Fretting damage depends on slip amplitude and classified into three groups: (1) an annular damage according to Mindlin's analysis at microslip region, (2) strong adhesive deformation without loose wear particles at the intermediate region, and (3) formation of fine oxide particles at the gross slip region. The critical slip amplitude of fretting is the boundary between (2) and (3). The boundary slip amplitude depends on normal load. The wear rate increases and saturates with increasing slip amplitude. But it is constant by considering the critical amplitude. The role of oxide particles are discussed. Three different actions are noted: accelerating wear, preventing wear and insignificant effect. The oxide shows two opposing effect depends on normal load and slip amplitude. This is related to the removal rate from the interface (abrasive action) and compaction rate at the interface to form a protective layer. The effect of oxidation is significant to determine the wear and friction. The diffusion of oxygen is restricted at the small amplitude. As a result, crack formation at the boundary is a predominant damage, related to fretting fatigue damage.

  • Nowadays study on recycling disused plastics for automobiles was lively progressed. Rubber and talcum powder was added to retrieve degradation of physical properties caused by recycling disused polypropylene. The effect of the temperature, the fatigue load and the loading speed on DEN(double edged notch) specimen which was made by the pp-rubber composites during fracture was studied by. DEN specimen was made on PP-rubber composites through the injection molding. With increasing temperature the fracture strength was linearly decreased and the fracture energy was increased by $0^{\circ}C$ and after that decreased. In the same temperature the fracture strength during increasing the notch radius was hardly increased. The fracture behaviour at low and high loading speed was different entirely. At high loading speed plastic region was small and fracture behaviour was seen to brittle fracture tendency. With increasing fatigue load fracture energy was first rapidly decreased and subsequently steady when radius of notch tip was 2mm, but Maximum load during fracture scarcely varied. The deformation mechanism of polypropylene-rubber composites during fracture was studied by SEM fractography. A strong plastic deformation of the matrix ahead of the notch/crack occurred. The deformation seem to be enhanced by a thermal blunting of the notch/crack.

  • Bogie is the connection device between carbody and wheel. It is the core part that exert a important effect on the passenger safety and running safety. Bogie largely consist of bogie frame, suspension, brake, wheel set. Static and Dynamic load have acted on it complexly. So when the bogie is designed, finite element method, static load test, fatigue test running test should be considered. Some bogie frame of high speed railway freight car have the problem. It's end beam was cracked. The crack of the end beam have a bad effect on brake system. ROTEM co. made an improved end beam and applied one set to freight car. this report showed the vibration characteristic which was compared conventional bogie to improved bogie for running safety.
