  • This study examined the mediating effects of marital relationships (marital satisfaction, marital conflict) and the moderating effects of mother's self-perception (self-efficacy, self-esteem) on the relationship between a father's involvement in parental roles and postpartum depression. The participants consisted of 1,863 mothers with infants from the Panel Study of Korean Children. The findings from this study are as follows. First, there were significant correlations between a father's involvement in the parental role, marital satisfaction, marital conflict, self-efficacy, self-esteem and postpartum depression. Second, the relationship between a father's involvement in the parental role and postpartum depression was significantly mediated by both marital satisfaction and marital conflict. Finally, both self-efficacy and self-esteem were seen to moderate the relationship between a father's involvement in the parental role and postpartum depression.

  • This current study was designed to explore the meaning of being a mother and a father in contemporary Korean society by examining their roles perceived by mothers and fathers with children at different developmental stages. A total of three hundred and ninety four couples with children aged from one to seventeen years were recruited for the study, and they were asked to complete a set of questionnaires about paternal and maternal roles each. A modified version of Generative Fathering Scales by Lee et al.(1999), was used to measure the roles perceived by fathers and mothers in two areas: (1) parenting responsibilities and (2) involvement in childrearing practices. The parental roles, as expected, were viewed differently by the surveyees with children at different ages: the younger child/ren a father has, the more involvement he emphasizes in childrearing. These results indicate that the roles of mothers and fathers should be considered in the context of developing children.

  • The aim of this study is to explore fathers' own expectations and experiences of fatherhood along with their views of what it meant to be a 'good' father. Qualitative methodologies were used; semi-structured in-depth interviews with 10 dual-earner fathers with young children. Interviewees overwhelmingly welcomed the opportunities offered to them by the new fatherhood model and supported a perceived cultural shift towards men and fathers being involved in, rather than detached from, family life. However tension and difficulty in living the ideal were also reported: gaps between perceptions and behaviors; struggle for traditional breadwinning role and caring; conflicts between selflessness and career and uninvolved in family decisions. Political and practical considerations are discussed, and the implications of this study for future research are identified.
