  • An applicaton of the linear optimal control theory to the problem or load follow control in pressurized water reactors (PWR) is investigated. In order to perform the steady-state and load follow operation in PWR, a nonlinear model for the reactor and steam generator is derived and linearized at 50% rated power. Simulation tests are performed for 10% demanded load. Comparing the dynamic response of the newly developed optimal load follow controller with those of the integral error feedback controller proposed by Yang, the rise time of dynamic response of the former is about 15 seconds faster than those of the latter, thus the results indicate that the fast response of the optimal load follow controller is verified. The results of this work are directly applicable to the design of the load follow control systems for commercially operated PWRs.

  • Electrically tunable photonic band gap (PBG) materials based on crystalline structures have been developed for active components of display. Despite considerable advances, the intrinsic drawbacks of the crystalline PBG materials such as the strong angle dependent hue and difficulty of fabricating defect-free structures in large area have yet to be addressed for their practical applications. Here we report quasi-amorphous colloidal structures exhibiting angle-independent photonic colors in response to the electric stimuli. Moderately polydisperse colloidal Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in organic solvents exclusively form quasi-amorphous photonic materials at sufficiently high concentrations (> 30 wt%), and which reversibly reflect incident light in visible region ($\lambda$ peak = 490~655 nm) in response to the relatively low bias voltage (0~4 V). We show the angle-independent tunable photonic colors with the fast response time (50~170 ms) due to the isotropic nature of quasi-amorphous structures. Conventional vacuum injection technique is applicable for fabricating flexible full color photonic display pixels with various pre-defined shapes.

  • This paper proposes the new adaptive protection algorithm for inverse-time overcurrent relays (OCRs) to ensure their proper operating time and protective coordination. The application of the proposed algorithm requires digital protection relays with microcontroller and memory. The operating parameters of digital OCRs are adjusted based on the available data whenever system conditions (system with distributed generation (DG)) vary. Moreover, it can reduce the calculation time required to determine the operating parameters for achieving its purpose. To verify its effectiveness, several case studies are performed in time-domain simulation. The results show that the proposed adaptive protection algorithm can keep the proper operating time and provide the protective coordination time interval with fast response.

  • Breath analysis using a portable device is better than the classical breath analysis system in terms of installation and operation. There is an increasing need to develop cost-effective equipment for testing gas sensors from the viewpoint of functionalities that can be applied applicable to portable devices. In the present study, an economical gas chamber for in-situ gas measurement is implemented with a single gas chamber without using expensive gas storage and control equipment; the gas response characteristics are analyzed using the above-described chamber. The main features of the implemented gas chamber are simple injection procedure, improved gas diffusion, easy measurement and cleaning, support for low-power mode measurement function for portable devices, and open source platform. Moreover, an analysis of gas response characteristics based on changes in sensor voltage show that the sensitivity and 90% response time are affected by the sensor voltage. Furthermore, the sensitivity graph has an inflection point in a specific range. The gas sensor applied in this study showed fast response speed and high sensitivity for sensor voltages of 3.0-3.5 V, regardless of the concentration of acetone gas, the target gas used in this study.

  • Many researches have been done to develop and improve the performance of personal (individual) dosimeter response to cover a wide of neutron energy range (from thermal to fast). Depending on the individual category of the dosimeter, the semiconductor sensor has been used to simplify and lightweight. In this plan, it's very important to have a fairly accurate counting of doses rate in different energies. With a general design and single-sensor simulations, all optimal thicknesses have been extracted. The performance of the simulation scheme has been compared with the commercial and laboratory samples in the world. Due to the deviation of all dosimeters with a flat energy response, in this paper, has been used an idea of one semi-conductor sensor to have the flat energy-response in the entire neutron energy range. Finally, by analyzing of the sensors data as arrays for the first time, we have reached a nearly flat and acceptable energy-response. Also a comparison has been made between Lucite-PMMA ($H_5C_5O_2$) and polyethylene-PE ($CH_2$) as a radiator and $B_4C$ has been studied as absorbent. Moreover, in this paper, the effect of gamma dose in the dosimeter has been investigated and shown around the standard has not been exceeded.

  • The robot proximity and tactile sensors can be categorized into two groups: grip sensors and safety sensors. They have different performance requirements. The safety sensor should have long proximity range and fast response in order to secure enough response time before colliding with ambient objects. As for the tactile sensing function, the safety sensor need to be fast and compliant to mitigate the impact from a collision. In order to meet these requirements, we proposed and demonstrated a compliant integrated safety sensor suitable to human-friendly robots. An ultrasonic proximity sensor and a piezoelectric tactile sensor made of PVDF films have been integrated in a compliant PDMS structure. The implemented sensor demonstrated the maximum proximity range of 35 cm. The directional tolerance for 30 cm detection range was about ${\pm}15^{\circ}$ from the normal axis. The integrated PVDF tactile sensor was able to detect various impacts of up to 20 N in a controlled experimental setup.

  • As national power consumption every year increases, the power plant which is in the process of planning tries to establish high-capacity generator. The power system tends to become a large size. With the progress of electronic components, the control systems of the generator have been digitalized and rapid-response control system is possible. However, the minute frequency vibration of grid occurred with the effect of rapid-response control system. To solve these problem, PPS(Power System Stability) has been introduced since 2004, and it has being installed and applied to the thermal and nuclear power plant which are high-capacity, over 800MVA. However the minute frequency vibration is gradually changed to the bigger frequency vibration by fast-action control system, and this regional frequency fluctuation might be diffused wide area. Therefore, it is applied to the hydro generator which is small with fast-action governor system, and it is necessary to control the minute frequency vibration to prevent to diffuse. In this paper, the effect will be proved by establishing PSS on the Hydro-Generator which has both digital excitation and governor system for the first time in Korea.

  • Recently, a variable valve timing system has been widely adopted in internal combustion engine in order to improve the fuel economy and torque at low engine speed. In addition, it is known that varying valve timing according to the various engine operations could reduce exhaust gas, especially NOx, because of residual gas by valve overlap. In this study, to improve the low exhaust gas and fuel economy at part load condition, the residual gas and back flow of exhaust gas due to valve overlap were calculated computationally. Moreover, the characteristics of engine performances and NOx formations were investigated with the experiment of combination of intake and exhaust valve timing condition. Under these various valve operating conditions, the effects of both the positive valve overlap and negative valve overlap(valve underlap) were examined simultaneously. Finally, the characteristics of cyclic THC emission were analyzed by using Fast Response FID(FR-FID) in the cylinder, intake port and exhaust port positions. Besides, the effect of the different gradients of the valve timing change on engine performance was investigated and an optimum control strategy was suggested.

  • Accurate positioning of a throttle valve is required to implement the traction control system(TCS) which improves acceleration performance in slippery roads. In this research, position control system is developed for the main throttle actuator(MTA) system which uses one throttle actuation for small volume and DC servo motor for fast response. In order to drive DC motor, PWM signal generator and PWM amplifier were built and interfaced to the motor and controller. Digital PID control law is used as basic control algorithm. In order to prevent overshoot and improve accuracy, velocity profiles are generated and implemented whenever the targer throttle angle is given from the TCS controller. Thanks to velocity profiles, the control performance was very good and only one set of PID gains was used to cover the entire operating range. Also, the resolution of position is about 0.4$^{\circ}C$, which is better than that of stepping motor also used as throttle actuator in some products. The response time of the developed system is also fast enough to implement the engine control based TCS algorithm.

  • In this paper, novel topology for fast response of various loads is proposed. The windup phenomenon appears and results in performance degradation when the PI controller output is saturated. A new anti-windup PI controller is proposed to improve the control performance of variable speed motor drives, and it is experimentally applied to the speed control of a hysteresis current-controlled SRM driven by an asymmetry bridge converter. The experimental results show that the speed response has much improved performance, such as small overshoot and fast settling time, over the conventional PI control.
